Previous studies have investigated the close association that exists between CAG repeat number and the age at onset in SCA2 = spinocerebellar ataxia type 2. Trichomonas vaginalis can be infected with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses designated T. vaginalis virus (TVV), which may have important implications for trichomonal virulence and disease pathogenesis. We tested for TVV in 40 fresh T. vaginalis isolates from Cuban patients by total extraction of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). TVV was detected in 22 (55%) of the 40 T. vaginalis isolates. This gives an estimate of the infection rate of Cuban T. vaginalis isolates by the dsRNA virus. Future research should focus on the association between trichomonosis symptoms and the presence of TVV.

A randomized, controlled, double blind study was carried out in Cuban children and teenagers aged 9-13 years to evaluate the immunogenicity of vax-TyVi-Salmonella Typhi Vi polysaccharide vaccine-with respect control vaccines. An evaluation was made of all cases of neural tube defects born in seven gynaecological hospitals and obstetric centres of Havana, between 1970 and 1980. Neural tube defects were recordable from 492 infants out of 319,228 births. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a new vaccine against human leptospirosis, a prospective cohort study was done with persons in the Cuban province of Holguín who were at risk of becoming ill with leptospirosis. The study included 118,018 persons from 15 to 65 years old who were considered to face either permanent or temporary risk. The vaccinated cohort consisted of 101,137 persons.
