The underlying mechanism of the hyperproliferative response of human autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) epithelia was studied. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) protein is highly expressed in ADPKD cyst epithelia in vivo, and primary cultures are hyperesponsive to mitogenic stimulation by EGF in vitro. Doses of > 1 ng/ml EGF were highly mitogenic to ADPKD epithelia. 3H-labeled thymidine proliferation assays showed that cyst fluids and ADPKD epithelial cell-conditioned media also stimulated renal epithelial cell proliferation and contained EGF immunoreactivity (6, 30, and 37 kDa) …

Human hydatidosis is characterized by a prolonged coexistence of Echinococcus granulosus and its host without effective rejection of the parasite. This parasitic infection constitutes a major health problem in Algeria. In this study, we investigated in vivo production of nitrite (NO(2)(-) + NO(3)(-)) in sera of Algerian patients carrying different cyst locations. Nitrite (NO(2)(-) + NO(3)(-)) levels were evaluated by the Griess method. Our results indicated that the levels of nitrite were significantly higher in the sera of hydatic patients than those of healthy controls supporting the involve

This is an unusual case of pseudothrombophlebitis resulting from rupture of Baker's cyst in a patient with Reiter's syndrome. The patient presented with a swollen, painful left calf and persistent itching on the skin of the calf. Ultrasonography showed a ruptured popliteal cyst with minimal hemorrhage and fluid collection within the fascial compartments and gastrocnemius muscle. Color Doppler ultrasound showed a patent popliteal vein and artery and duplex Doppler scans revealed a normal flow pattern. In conclusion, the clinical picture of deep vein thrombosis and that of pseudothrombophlebitis

Cystic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a rare subtype of BCC (1). Histologically, it is usually characterized by multiple small cysts without a clinical cystic appearance (2). Herein, we report an unusual case of cystic BCC with a large vulvar cyst. A 90-year-old Japanese woman visited our hospital with a pedunculated subcutaneous nodule on her right labia majora that had persisted for 10 years and had grown rapidly in the past 4 years. The initial examination revealed a cystic tumor (size 90×70×60 mm) (Figure 1, A). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass surrounded by a focally thick

Synovial cysts are fluid-filled masses lined with synovium and located within or about joints. The main symptoms are pain and/or neurological deficits. They can be intraneural or extraneural or develop between or within muscles. Synovial cysts that arise at a distance from a joint raise diagnostic challenges. We report three cases of synovial cysts of the proximal tibiofibular joint, including an intramuscular cyst responsible for paralysis of the anterolateral leg muscles. Tibiofibular synovial cysts are less common than popliteal cysts, and their pathophysiology is poorly understood. Pressur

Surgical interventions for arachnoid cysts and glioependymal cysts primarily focus on cyst decompression and establishing communication with cerebrospinal fluid spaces. However, a standardized surgical strategy for symptomatic convexity cysts lacking surrounding cerebrospinal fluid space is still lacking due to the limited number of cases. This systematic review aims to evaluate surgical interventions for symptomatic convexity cysts and proposes a safe and effective treatment approach we have developed. A systematic review of the literature was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for

Perineurial cysts usually affect the lumbosacral spinal nerve roots, but sometimes they can erode the sacrum and reach the retroperitoneal space. In such cases misdiagnosis can lead to an improper treatment and cause serious complications. A presacral mass was diagnosed in a young woman during routine ultrasound investigation, and an exploratory laparotomy was performed. A large, fluid-containing cyst was found and marsupialized into the pelvis. After operation the patient experienced headache, vomiting and VI cranial nerve palsy whenever she stood up. By radiculography a iatrogenic spinopelvi

A patient from Benin experienced bilateral sciatic pain, followed by a progressive sensori-motor defect of the lower limbs. Five years after, he displayed symptoms and signs of a thoracic spinal cord compression, but no definite level could be determined. Myelography showed numerous intrathecal cysts from the cauda equina to the cervical cord. The diagnosis of cysticercosis was made by examination of the cysts removed after lumbar laminectomy. The search for another localisation of the parasite was negative. Repeated examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed the presence of eosinophils,

INTRODUCTION: Retinal cysts are rare lesions of the fundus that are essentially fluid-filled cavities located or originating in the retina, with a diameter larger than the normal retinal thickness. To date, there have been few case reports of giant retinal cyst hemorrhage with retinoschisis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old woman with no other medical history complained of decreased vision for 3 days after a severe cough. The best-corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 0.5. A comprehensive ophthalmological examination including slit-lamp fundoscopy, ultrasound scan of the eye, optical c

Evidence suggests an important role for the renin-angiotensin system in the pathogenesis of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Therefore, we studied the presence of immunoreactive renin in renal biopsies and measured the concentrations of renin in cyst fluids. Normal kidneys and kidneys with renal artery stenosis were used for comparison. In ADPKD, immunoreactive renin was present in juxtaglomerular apparatus, associated arterioles, and in some cells within the connective tissue surrounding the cysts. Vascular immunoreactive renin was less prominent than in renal artery sten…

Spontaneous intraventricular haemorrhage with hydrocephalus frequently requires neurosurgical intervention, including ventriculoperitoneal shunting. We describe a periventricular cyst following the placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in a 67-year-old female patient. The patient was admitted for rehabilitation after a spontaneous left basal ganglia and diffuse intraventricular haemorrhage with hydrocephalus. Initial management included an extraventricular drain, followed by a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. On Day 5 of rehabilitation, the patient was urgently reviewed for reduced level of con

Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare disorder that usually presents with cholestatic symptoms such as jaundice, pale stool, and dark urine shortly after birth. Intracranial hemorrhage is a rare manifestation. BA may sometimes be associated with a cyst in the biliary tree. Differentiating choledochal cyst with BA or cystic biliary atresia can be quite challenging yet very important as they differ significantly in their prognosis and treatment. Furthermore, clear mucoid fluid in the extrahepatic cyst is an unusual occurrence. This case report aims to raise awareness about this rare variant to facilita

A 34-year-old woman visited our hospital for treatment of a huge splenic cyst with epigastric pain. She had been diagnosed with Gaucher's disease (Type 1) at 3 years of age and had been receiving enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) from 15 years of age. Abdominal MRI showed a low-intensity area, 30 cm in diameter, with a well-defined border on T1-weighted images. The patient underwent laparoscopic fenestration of the huge splenic cyst for relief of worsening epigastric pain caused by the cyst. The cyst contained 2,500 ml of brownish-red fluid. The patient recovered satisfactorily and was discharg

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign and locally destructive bone lesion usually seen in the younger population. Its etiology is unknown. Its yearly incidence rate has been reported to be 0.14/100,000, comprising 1% of all bone tumors. It may develop primarily or arise from primary bone tumors. Hemorrhagic fluid content with a septated appearance is the characteristic feature of aneurysmal bone cyst. It is most commonly seen in the metaphysis of the long bones. In rare cases, the cyst is located in the skull. Primary treatment is surgical excision, and the recurrence rate after treatment is 10 to

Eleven cases of intraventricular neurocysticercosis were managed over a 10-year period. All patients presented with features of hydrocephalus. In 9 cases the cysts were blocking the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathway resulting in hydrocephalus. The 4 cases of lateral ventricular cyst had communicating hydrocephalus, while 2 of these had asymmetrical ventriculomegaly. Two of 4 cases had more than one cyst. One of 4 children with lateral ventricular cyst had narrowing of the foramen of Monro causing asymmetrical hydrocephalus. Following cyst removal, CSF diversion was not required in 6 cases, whi

A 21-year-old female American Saddle Horse with a prominent swelling on the ventral aspect of the right hemimandible and radiographic evidence of a bone cyst was examined. The cyst cavity was surgically explored and was found to contain mucinous fluid and sheets of keratin. Microscopically, the cyst was lined by well-differentiated squamous epithelium characterized by various degrees of hyperkeratosis and parakeratosis. The stromal component varied from scant areas in which epithelium was closely apposed to bone to wide regions of dense connective tissue that contained fragments of keratin sur

This study presents seven cases of lateral meniscal cysts treated arthroscopically. All were noted to have meniscal lesions at the time of surgery; there were five flap tears and two radial tears. Partial arthroscopic meniscectomy was performed and the contents of the cysts were manipulated into the joint in six of seven cases. One patient underwent open cyst excision in addition to partial arthroscopic meniscectomy. Followup ranged from 18 months to 4 years with an average of 28 months. There were no cyst recurrences. The pathologic basis of the meniscal cyst is controversial, but recent work

Pulmonary cyst is a relatively common benign lesion. It is easy to be misdiagnosed when the cyst complicated with infection. This paper reported a case of a giant traumatic pulmonary cyst (diameter 10 cm) combined with chronic infection. Firstly, the patient was diagnosed as cholesterol pleurisy after undergoing thoracoscopic biopsy. With repeated pleural effusion, the patient was scheduled for right anterolateral thoracotomy, which showed a thin-walled cyst (10 cm in diameter) attached to parietal and diaphragm, with the stem of cavity originated from the right lower lobe after the cyst cavit
