This article presents and evaluates the symptoms, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of men with interstitial cystitis (IC). A retrospective chart review and an interview of all men in our practice diagnosed with IC since 1990 was performed. The patients' presenting symptoms, physical findings, clinical evaluation, and responses to therapy were reviewed. A total of 52 men were identified during the study who met the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) criteria for diagnosis of IC. The most common referral diagnosis was prostatitis with the most common p…

At least 90% of the half-million Americans with interstitial cystitis (IC) are women. But correctly diagnosing and treating the problem are not as clear as the statistics. The clinical hallmarks--bladder pain, urinary urgency and frequency, nocturia, and dysuria--are not confined to IC. A key feature of diagnosing the problem is to exclude the vast array of other possibilities, including carcinoma and detrusor hyperreflexia. To confirm the diagnosis, cystoscopic exam with hydrodistention is needed to visualize diffuse glomerulations or classic Hunner's ulcer. Treatment is empiric and can invol…

Thirty six female patients with acute cystitis were treated with one shot intravenous injection of 1 g cefminox. Clinical efficacy was evaluated based on extent of subjective symptoms, pyuria and bacteriuria. Of 36 patients, an excellent efficacy was shown in 32 cases, moderate in 3 cases and poor in 1 case. This poor case was diagnosed as complicated urinary tract infection because of right vesicoureteral reflux. Therefore, the overall effectiveness rate of this treatment for acute uncomplicated cystitis in women was 100%. Single dose chemotherapy with an adequate antibiotic is considered a u…

Between 1978 and 1982, 88 patients were treated with radiotherapy at the University of the Witwatersrand Hospitals for carcinoma of the bladder. They were followed up for evidence of cystitis (i.e. frequency, urgency, nocturia, dysuria, haematuria). Those with persistent symptoms underwent cystoscopy. Biopsies were taken of areas suspicious of residual or recurrent tumour. The total incidence of late bladder complications was 11 (12,5%). Of these 11 patients, 6 had persistent or recurrent tumour. The implications of this are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: Fibrin glue (FG) endo-vesical application seems to be a promising therapy for hemorrhagic cystitis (HC). We aimed to evaluate efficacy and safety of FG instillation in patients with HC.
METHODS: Patients with HC not responsive to conventional treatments (bladder irrigation, catheterization, blood transfusions, hyperhydration and endoscopic coagulation) were treated with FG endo-vesical instillation (April 2017- December 2018). FG was prepared from 120 mL of patient blood with the Vivostat® system. After standard cystoscopy, bladder was insufflated with carbon dioxide (CO2) accordi…

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a heterogeneous condition of uncertain etiology. We assessed bladder collagen characteristics in phenotypically characterized IC/BPS patient subgroups that may influence pathophysiology. Forty-four females (30 IC/BPS; 14 non-IC/BPS) were included. Patients were divided into groups based on Hunner lesions (HL; N=14 or non-HL; N=16) and anesthetic bladder capacity (BC) (BC≤500 cc; low BC; N=17 or BC>500 cc; non-low BC; N=13). Bladder biopsy tissue slides were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or picrosirius red and semi-quantitatively anal…

Radiation cystitis (RC) is a clinically challenging and often progressive complication of pelvic radiotherapy, marked by urothelial injury, vascular dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and fibrotic remodeling. Early diagnosis remains elusive due to nonspecific symptoms and the absence of validated molecular tools. As a biofluid in direct contact with the irradiated bladder, urine offers a unique molecular window into RC pathogenesis. In this review, we synthesize the current landscape of urinary biomarkers associated with the acute, latent, and chronic phases of RC, including inflammatory cytok…

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and depression are persistent disorders of uncertain etiology that commonly present together without an established link. However, the mechanism underlying the link between these conditions is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between depression subtypes and IC/BPS.
METHODS: Using a nationwide database, patients newly diagnosed with depression (2002-2013) were identified and stratified into three subgroups, i.e., recurrent major depression (RD), single-episodic major depression (S…

IMPORTANCE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a common, stigmatizing, and poorly understood condition. With more people turning to TikTok for health information, it is important to assess the quality of IC/BPS-related content on this platform, which has not been studied to date.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate how IC/BPS is discussed on TikTok, assess the quality of the information provided, and determine the utility of these videos as patient education tools.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional, content analysis study using a web scra…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare, potentially life-threatening urinary tract infection characterized by gas formation within the bladder wall and lumen. It predominantly affects elderly diabetic women and is most commonly caused by Escherichia coli. While EC usually responds to conservative management, extravesical complications are exceedingly uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 85-year-old diabetic woman presented with dysuria, generalized weakness, and cessation of stool and flatus for 1 day. Imaging revealed EC with left-sided pyeloureteritis, pneumoperitoneu…

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare, potentially life-threatening urinary tract infection characterized by gas within the bladder wall or lumen due to gas-forming organisms. It most commonly occurs in patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Reports following COVID-19 remain limited. A 56-year-old male presented five weeks after recovery from COVID-19 pneumonia with fever, flank pain, and lower abdominal pain. Investigations revealed severe hyperglycemia, leukocytosis, and pyuria. CT of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder demonstrated intramural gas with anterior bladder wall dehiscence. …

The diagnosis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome primarily relies on symptom assessment and exclusion of other conditions, heavily depending on the physician's experience. Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is classified into two major categories: cases with Hunner lesions, while others without Hunner lesions. Detecting Hunner lesions requires cystoscopic examination; however, performing cystoscopy necessitates the physician suspecting that the patient is likely to have "interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome." Objective, non-invasive biomarkers serving as diagnostic …

There is a need for a proper and uniform understanding of the clinical entity, Interstitial cystitis/Bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). The disease is primarily a clinical condition and therefore it is important to understand the definition and clinical features of this disease entity. The definitions have evolved, and the subject is still evolving. The definition coined by the Global Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome Society (GIBS) has become popular. The clinical features are the way to diagnose, and stepwise history and examination lead a clinician to the diagnosis. The clinical feat…

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic condition characterized by bladder pain and lower urinary tract symptoms. Despite extensive investigation and numerous therapeutic candidates, few disease-modifying treatments have translated into clinical practice. Evidence indicates that IC/BPS comprises biologically distinct phenotypes, including inflammatory bladder-centric and systemic pain-associated phenotypes, creating challenges for experimental modeling and drug development.
