The structural stability of wild-type horse prion protein.

Prion diseases (e.g. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), variant CJD (vCJD), Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) and Kuru in humans, scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or 'mad-cow' disease) and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cattles) are invariably fatal and highly infectious neurodegenerative diseases affecting humans and animals. However, by now there have not been some effective therapeutic approaches or medications to treat all these prion diseases. Rabbits, dogs, and horses are the only mammalian species reported to be resistant

Streptomyces turgidiscabies secretes a novel virulence protein, Nec1, which facilitates infection.

Emergence of new, economically important plant-pathogenic species in the mostly saprophytic genus Streptomyces involves acquisition of a large, mobile pathogenicity island (PAI). Biosynthetic genes for a phytotoxin, thaxtomin A, are contained on this PAI. The Nec1 protein has necrogenic activity on excised potato tuber tissue, and the encoding gene is highly conserved in plant-pathogenic Streptomyces spp. The G+C content of nec1 indicates lateral transfer from an unrelated taxon; however, the nucleic acid and protein databases have not yielded homologs. Data presented in this article demonstra

Transcriptional interactions during smallpox infection and identification of early infection biomarkers.

Smallpox is a deadly disease that can be intentionally reintroduced into the human population as a bioweapon. While host gene expression microarray profiling can be used to detect infection, the analysis of this information using unsupervised and supervised classification techniques can produce contradictory results. Here, we present a novel computational approach to incorporate molecular genome annotation features that are key for identifying early infection biomarkers (EIB). Our analysis identified 58 EIBs expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 21 cynomolgus m
