OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of root canal filling performed by dentists and advanced dental trainees (ADTs) and the current level of continuing education in a dental teaching hospital. METHODS: 2 043 cases, randomly completed by six dentists and eight ADTs over half a year, were divided into two groups. The quality of root canal filling was analyzed radiographically. RESULTS: The overall percentage of the adequate root filling was 49.6%. The percentages of the adequate teeth filling and root canals filling (59.9%; 63.9%) by dentists were significantly higher than those (40.1%; 47.4%) …

Utilization of computer-aided detection system in diagnosing unilateral maxillary sinusitis on panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: It is unclear whether computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for panoramic radiography can help inexperienced dentists to diagnose maxillary sinusitis. The aim of this study was to clarify whether a CAD system for panoramic radiography can contribute to improved diagnostic performance for maxillary sinusitis by inexperienced dentists. METHODS: The panoramic radiographs of 49 patients with maxillary sinusitis and 49 patients with healthy sinuses were evaluated in this study. The diagnostic performance of the CAD system was determined. 12 inexperienced dentists and 4 expert oral and…

Infection control in the dental office: has anything changed?

Using data collected in two studies, the authors compare infection control practices used in dental offices in 1988 and 1992. During that time, dentists increased their use of barrier protection but still asked and learned very little about their patients. This lack of communication hinders dentists' ability to deliver the best care possible. The authors recommend that dentists improve communication with their patients to obtain better information about their health status.

Physical evaluation and the prevention of medical emergencies: vital signs.

It was assumed that dentists employ a complete system of physical evaluation for all new patients in their dental practices. Results of a survey of 1,588 dentists demonstrated that the use of a written medical history questionnaire was commonplace; however, recording of blood pressure and heart rate and rhythm on all new patients was quite limited. A greater percentage of dentists monitored blood pressure when there was a history of cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure. Monitoring of the heart rate and rhythm, even in patients with cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, was se…

A Smart Device for a Preliminary Dental Examination Based on the Internet of Things.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the lives of many people, especially the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, as well as threatening the global economy. In response to the pandemic, many medical centers, including dental facilities, have significantly reduced the treatment of patients by limiting clinical practice to exclusively urgent, nondeferred care. Dentists are more vulnerable to contracting COVID-19, due to the necessity of the dentist being close to the patient. One of the precautions that dentists take to avoid transmitting infections is to wear a mask and gloves. However, t…

Evaluation of the reasons for preferring root canal treatment in mature permanent teeth potentially indicated for pulp preservation: a clinical case/photo-based questionnaire study.

BACKGROUND: With advances in pulp preservation procedures (PPP), indications for PPP extend to exposed pulp with symptoms in teeth with carious lesions. Scenario/text-based questionnaire studies report a high preference for PPP for exposed pulp with no pulpal symptoms. However, negative perceptions towards PPP for exposed pulp in carious teeth are prevalent among dentists. Identifying the differences in PPP preference rates in questionnaire studies and actual clinical situations is necessary to determine the current status of PPP. In this study, a clinical case/photo-based design was devised t…

A comparative analysis of deep learning models for assisting in the diagnosis of periapical lesions in periapical radiographs.

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have investigated the use of convolutional neural network (CNN) models for detecting periapical lesions(PLs). However, limited research has focused on evaluating their potential in assisting clinicians with diagnosis. This study aims to utilize two deep learning(DL) models, ConvNeXt and ResNet34, to aid novice dentists in the detection of PLs on periapical radiographs (PRs). By assessing the diagnostic support provided by these models, this research seeks to promote the clinical application of DL in dentistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 1,305 PRs were gath…

Managing the phase-down of amalgam amongst Nigerian dental professionals and students: A national survey.

BACKGROUND: Amalgam is one of the most reliable dental restorative materials. Health and environmental concerns associated with the mercury content of amalgam have necessitated an amalgam phase-down in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the level of awareness and preparedness for the planned amalgam phase-down recommended by the Minamata Convention amongst Nigerian dental students and dentists. METHODS: This cross-sectional national survey was performed across all geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Data regarding awareness, practice and level of preparedness for amalgam phase…

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices among Dental Practitioners Regarding Antibiotic Prescriptions for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women in the Dominican Republic.

In this study, we aimed to explore the trends among dentists in the Dominican Republic of providing antibiotic prescriptions to pregnant/breastfeeding dental patients. A survey was conducted among 98 dentists, using a self-administered questionnaire, about their knowledge and attitudes regarding antibiotic usage in pregnant/lactating women and the translation of these into practice. The majority of the survey population were female dentists (63.3%) aged 45-54 years. A chi-square test showed statistically significant differences in the knowledge sources between older and younger dentists, with …

Haematological considerations in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease: a review.

In patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD), the need for prior antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis is well known to dentists, but not many dentists are aware of the associated haemorrhagic tendencies in such patients. Haemostatic abnormalities associated with CCHD are an important aspect that is often overlooked by both physicians and dentists. We briefly review the literature to highlight the importance of more elaborate haematological evaluation in patients with CCHD, prior to any oral surgical procedures.

Treatment of the geriatric dentally phobic patient.

The elderly patient, who is phobic or exceedingly anxious established behavior patterns years ago when dentistry was not as advanced as today and when dental experiences were unpleasant and uncomfortable. The elderly phobic patient may view his role as a passive participant as he was in his youth; that is, he fears that the dentist will treat him as he was treated by an unsympathetic dentist years ago. In order to create acceptable, positive experiences for the phobic or anxious patient, the first appointment should give the patient an opportunity to know the dentist and office staff. The dent

In vivo ultrasonic debridement forces in bicuspids: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hand instruments lead to application of excessive forces, resulting in extensive root substance removal. Ultrasonic debridement primarily removes accretions from root surfaces. However, there is a lack of information on procedural aspects of ultrasonic debridement. The purpose of the present study was to assess the forces applied by different therapists during ultrasonic root surface debridement of bicuspids in periodontal patients in vivo. METHODS: Ten dentists and 10 dental hygienists each debrided 1 aspect of a bicuspid with moderate chronic periodontitis using an ultrasonic cu…
