Hand Dermatitis in Nursing Students.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of self-reported hand dermatitis and the factors influencing its prevalence among nursing students. METHODS: Researchers collected demographic data and used a self-assessment form to identify dermatologic symptoms. The questionnaires were distributed to the students and collected again after the students completed the forms. RESULTS: Hand dermatitis was present in 20.9% of nursing students. The most common symptoms were irritation/pruritus, redness/cracking, flaking/rash, swelling, and vesicles in hands. The grade of the student, the presence of allergy …

Caterpillar dermatitis: A brief report.

A 3 year-old boy presented to our clinic with a 3-day history of itchy rash involving the face and limbs and recent contact with a caterpillar. A diagnosis of caterpillar dermatitis was suspected. This condition has rarely been reported and may be underestimated in the pediatric population who may suffer more systemic symptoms associated with caterpillar contact.

Allergic contact dermatitis in children.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease which accounts for up to 20% of all childhood dermatitis. Childhood allergic contact dermatitis is more frequent than previously thought and today early diagnosis is considered very important. Patch testing represents the gold standard method used to confirm the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. The knowledge of the most common allergens involved in allergic contact dermatitis in pediatric age is important considering that the first-line management of allergic contact dermatitis in children is to avoid the involv…

Acute Radiation Therapy-related Dermatitis.

Radiation therapy (RT) following breast-conserving surgical excision of cancer reduces cancer-related mortality and recurrence.1 However, most patients experience acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) within weeks after beginning RT2; symptoms of ARD, including severe skin erythema, dryness, moist or dry desquamation, and/or ulceration, may interrupt radiotherapy. This can negatively affect patient quality of life (QoL) and cancer outcomes. Acute radiation dermatitis is not to be confused with chronic radiation dermatitis, which can lead to fibrosis, skin atrophy, pigmentation, and telangiectasia m…

Ceftriaxone-induced radiation recall dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an acute inflammatory skin reaction occurring in a skin area previously exposed to radiotherapy and triggered by subsequent intake of a drug, most commonly a chemotherapeutic agent. RRD secondary to antibiotics has also been reported but is a rare phenomenon overall and there are no reports of RRD in association with ceftriaxone exposure. METHODS: We report on a 59-year-old patient who had received radiotherapy to the neck bilaterally and who developed RRD 6 months later after a single dose of intramuscular ceftriaxone. RESULTS: The patient's …

Pediatric contact dermatitis: what's new.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) was once thought to be rare in children but recent studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of ACD is common and appears to be increasing in children. Current trends including toys, hobbies, and personal care products may play a role in potentially new allergen exposure or resurgence of certain allergens, making ACD a moving target in children. RECENT FINDINGS: ACD and atopic dermatitis can coexist and certain clinical features can help differentiate ACD from endogenous atopic dermatitis in children. It is important to consider ACD in …

Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Fragrances.

Allergic contact dermatitis to fragrance is common. The prevalence of fragrance allergy in the general population is between 0.7% and 2.6%. In patch-test populations, the positive reaction rate to fragrances ranges from 5% to 11%. The most common fragrance screeners in most baseline series include fragrance mix 1, fragrance mix 2, and Balsam of Peru. The addition of hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde, hydroperoxides of limonene, and hydroperoxides of linalool to screening series can further aid in the diagnosis of fragrance allergy. In the proper clinical setting, supplemental patch …

Systemic Contact Dermatitis: A review.

Systemic contact dermatitis (SCD) is a broad category of syndromes characterized by a variety of clinical presentations and offending agents. There exists general consensus that SCD and its subcategories are due to type IV (and less commonly type III) hypersensitivity reactions, in which a previously sensitized individual undergoes a cytotoxic CD8+ T-cell response upon systemic reexposure. There are various linked allergens, generally grouped into plants, foods, metals, and medications. Diagnosis is relatively successful through epicutaneous patch testing utilizing standard series and customiz…

Nitrofurantoin-induced radiation recall dermatitis.

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an inflammatory skin reaction that develops in a previously quiescent radiation field triggered most commonly by chemotherapy, particularly anthracyclines and taxanes. Radiation-recall dermatitis secondary to antibiotic therapy is quite rare. The patient is 61-year-old female with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the left breast treated with neoadjuvant carboplatin, paclitaxel, and anthracycline chemotherapy followed by surgery and subsequent whole breast radiation 6040 cGy. Eight years after completion of her radiation she developed diffuse redness …

Plant Allergen-Induced Contact Dermatitis.

Although manifold beneficial effects of plant compounds for the treatment of skin disorders are known, cutaneous exposure to plants can also result in various types of incompatibility reactions such as contact dermatitis. In this mini-review, we briefly describe the different clinical forms of contact dermatitis (photoinduced, irritative, and allergic form) and highlight recent publications in the field of contact dermatitis. Major topics are recent recommendations regarding testing for plant contact dermatitis, advances in understanding the immunological mechanisms of plant contact dermatitis…

Contact dermatitis: A great imitator.

Contact dermatitis (CD) refers to a group of cutaneous diseases caused by contact with allergens or irritants. It is characterized by different stages of an eczematous eruption and has the ability to mimic a wide variety of dermatologic conditions, including inflammatory dermatitis, infectious conditions, cutaneous lymphoma, drug eruptions, and nutritional deficiencies. Irritant CD and allergic CD are the two main presentations of the disease. The diagnosis is based on a detailed history, physical examination, and patch testing, if necessary. Knowing the conditions mimicked by CD should improv…

Seborrheic dermatitis-Looking beyond Malassezia.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis (SD) is a very common chronic and/or relapsing inflammatory skin disorder whose pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Yeast of the genus Malassezia has long been regarded as a main predisposing factor, even though causal relationship has not been firmly established. Additional predisposing factors have been described, including sebaceous activity, host immunity (especially HIV infection), epidermal barrier integrity, skin microbiota, endocrine and neurologic factors, and environmental influences. Genetic studies in humans and mouse models-with particularly interesti…
