[Prevention of allergy by protective skin creams: possibilities and limits].

Despite promising efficacy data for protective creams and many scientifically proven advances that have been achieved concerning the prevention of irritative contact dermatitis, protection against sensitising substances remains a particular problem due to the minimal amounts of allergen that trigger allergic contact dermatitis. Therefore, specific allergen-blocking substances have been tested which are designed to prevent sensitising processes and in particular avoid occurrence of contact dermatitis in already sensitised individuals. In this review, we present the results of current studies ma

[Prevention of hand eczema].

Apart from endogenous factors, hand eczema is often caused by irritant or allergic contact dermatitis related to occupational or non-occupational exposure to skin hazards. This enables several complementary approaches on the level of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. A high priority is set on identification and subsequent reduction or elimination of causative exposures. Important preventive approaches include legal regulations, technical and organizational measures as well as correct use of adequate personal protective equipment (e.g. protective gloves). Interventions based on health

A systematic review of contact dermatitis treatment and prevention.

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common occupational disease. There have been no systematic reviews of CD treatment or prevention. METHODS: Multiple databases were systematically searched. Using independent double review and published quality review criteria, articles were rated as good, fair, or poor. Treatment benefit data were tabulated and conclusions were based on the rated strength of published evidence. RESULTS: In all, 49 studies met inclusion criteria. Barrier creams containing dimethicone or perfluoropolyethers, cotton liners, and softened fabrics prevent irritant CD. Lipid

Isocyanates.

Owing to the widespread use of isocyanate-derived products across multiple industries, it is important for physicians to be aware of their sensitizing potential. We first provide a general overview of isocyanates and the industries that may be associated with exposure to these compounds. This is followed by a description of the most commonly used isocyanate products in commercial patch test preparations. Finally, we discuss appropriate isocyanate patch testing methodology and optimal isocyanate patch test concentrations.

Loss-of-function polymorphisms in the filaggrin gene are associated with an increased susceptibility to chronic irritant contact dermatitis: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms in the filaggrin (FLG) gene, which result in loss of filaggrin production, may alter the skin barrier and are a well-known predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: As a compromised skin barrier and atopic dermatitis are risk factors for chronic irritant contact dermatitis (CICD), our objective was to determine whether polymorphisms in the FLG gene contribute towards susceptibility to occupational CICD. METHODS: In a case-control study, the FLG polymorphisms R501X and 2282del4 were determined in 296 patients with CICD. Two hundred and seventeen apprenti

Hand Hygiene Among Health Care Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Recommendations.

In-hospital transmission is one of the main routes of the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) spreading among health care workers (HCWs) who are the frontline fighters. However, coming into contact with COVID-19-positive patients is unavoidable. Therefore, hand hygiene is of utmost importance for the prevention of COVID-19 among HCWs. This purpose can be achieved by applying alcohol-based hand rubs, washing hands properly with soap and water, and applying other antiseptic agents. Nevertheless, regular hand hygiene could also be challenging, because water, detergents, and disinfectants may pred

Protection from combination exposure.

In the workplace, repeated skin exposure to a combination of irritants either simultaneously or one after the other is frequent. Therefore, assessing the efficacy of skin protection products only against single irritants is far from the daily life situation. We studied the interaction of irritants in a tandem repeated irritation test (TRIT). Shortly, healthy volunteers are exposed repeatedly to different irritants, and the skin reactions are assessed by visual scoring, transepidermal water loss, chromametry and skin capacitance. Using this model, a potentiation of irritation could be shown for
