Skin barrier functions, environmental insults, and genetic backgrounds are intricately linked and form the basis of common inflammatory skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis, which may seriously affect one's quality of life. Topical therapy is usually the first line of management. It is believed that successful topical treatment requires pharmaceutical formulation from a sufficient dosage to exert therapeutic effects by penetrating the stratum corneum and then diffusing to the target area. However, many factors can affect this process including the phy

Crisaborole, a topical phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor, was recently approved in 2016 for the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in adults and children greater than 2 years of age. Since that time, several case reports and a small randomized controlled trial have been published regarding the off-label use of crisaborole for the treatment of other inflammatory dermatologic disorders. This paper reviews the current, albeit limited, evidence for off-label use of crisaborole for psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, vitiligo, and inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus. Additional pot

Chronic blepharitis is one of the most common diseases of the eyelids, but surprisingly, it is not often recognized. Frequently, a skin disease such as seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, or acne rosacea is the underlying cause of chronic blepharitis. Bacterial pathological lipase, cholesterylesterase production, and bacterial lipopolysaccharides are pathogenetically relevant. Only rarely do genuine bacterial infections play a role. Collarettes occur at the base of the eye lashes, and the Meibomian glands show either abundant fluid secretion or inspissated secretion with obstruction of t

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the skin problems of high level musicians in a professional orchestra. This study was prompted by our observation of violinists with skin changes.
METHODS: Ninety-seven musicians were evaluated. Twelve reporting dermatitis associated with the playing of their instruments were patch tested. We also examined 20 singers (nonplayers).
RESULTS: Positive patch test reactions to nickel and colophony were found in only three patients. Musicians were subject to a variety of skin problems from playing their instruments, however, such as hyperhidrosis, cheilitis, and calluses

INTRODUCTION: Various dermatoses, due to their morbidity characteristics, have been shown to negatively impact on learning. The most epidemiologically important seem to be the infectious types because of their transmissibility and amenability to simple school-health measures. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and sex/age correlates of infectious dermatoses in a rural South-eastern Nigerian community.
METHODS: The pupils were proportionately recruited from the three primary schools based on school population. Stratified simple random sampling method was adopted and a table of

INTRODUCTION: Several skin diseases are associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In Africa, due to the difficult access to medical care and complementary examinations, certain diseases are of particular importance. In the present work, we report the skin manifestations observed in a dermatology unit of a large city in Africa over a 3 year period and which were the revealing signs of HIV infection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All adult subjects (>15 years) with a positive HIV serology (confirmed by Western blot) that had been revealed by a skin disease seen at the Marchoux Insti

Langerhans cell histiocytosis, previously known as histiocytosis X, is a disease whose clinical presentation varies. Although it is uncommon, Langerhans cell histiocytosis may involve the perianal region. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with perianal ulcerated vegetative lesions and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Biopsy of the lesions showed Langerhans cell histiocytosis. This patient did not have any other organ involvement, which is rare. The outcome was favourable with vinblastine and corticoids.

Examination of skin biopsy specimens from persons using anabolic-androgenic steroids demonstrates dramatic hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands. High dosages of testosterone and anabolic-androgenic steroids, often self-administered by athletes, increase skin surface lipids, the cutaneous population of Propionibacteria acnes and the cholesterol and free fatty acids of the skin surface lipids. Acne, oily hair and skin, sebaceous cysts, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, striae atrophicae, seborrheic dermatitis, and secondary infections including furunculosis may occur in persons using these drugs.

One hundred and one patients who met criteria for alcoholism were evaluated for dermatologic signs. There were 98 men and 3 women, with an average age of 40.85 years; 40 were white and 61 black. Significant findings were no skin disease in 19, acne in 27, folliculitis in 8, seborrheic dermatitis in 12, tinea pedis in 32, and xerosis in 7. Only two patients had rosacea, which is contrary to previously held beliefs about the drinker's nose.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous disorders during HIV infection are numerous and skin is often the first and only organ affected during most of the course of HIV disease. Some Cutaneous disorders reflect the progression of HIV disease; though the relation is still controversial.
AIMS: The objective of this study, conducted at a tertiary care centre in Bastar, Jagdalpur, is to estimate the status of cutaneous manifestation in HIV-infected patients and its relationship with CD4 cell counts.
METHODS: We enrolled 137 HIV positive subjects. Demographic information such as age, gender, weight, height, socioe

A 3 month old male child was brought to the hospital with complaints of skin rashes, developmental delay, seizures, seborrheic dermatitis, alopecia and mild, acidosis. The child was subjected to a simple metabolic screening protocol. The result of the screening and the clinical symptoms provided an index pointing towards biotinidase deficiency., a rare autosomal recessive, inherited metabolic disorder. The enzyme was then assayed by using n-biotinylp-aminobenzoate as substrate and the diagnosis confirmed. A follow-up of the case indicated the efficacy, of biotin supplementation in biotinidase

The prevalence of cutaneous Malassezia spp was evaluated in a semiquantitative fashion at 3 sites on 98 dogs examined because of various dermatoses. Thirty (10.2%) of the sites and 19 (19.4%) of the dogs had Malassezia spp amounts higher than that found on grossly normal skin. The prevalence of higher than normal amounts did not correlate significantly with sample site, sex, or age. The factors associated with an increased prevalence of increased Malassezia spp counts were seborrheic dermatitis, recent antibiotic treatment, and breed.

Papulosquamous diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders whose etiology primarily is unknown. The nosology of these disorders is based on a descriptive morphology of clinical lesions characterized by scaly papules and plaques. The major entities in this group include psoriasis, parapsoriasis (including pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta), lichen planus, lichen nitidus, lichen striatus, pityriasis rosea, pityriasis rubra pilaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and the Gianotti-Crosti syndrome. Many other conditions may become papulosquamous and should be considered in the differential

In 3 dogs, focal, well-circumscribed skin lesions compatible clinically with seborrheic dermatitis responded to oral treatment with vitamin A. Skin biopsy findings were compatible with phrynoderma in man, a disease thought to be associated with vitamin A deficiency. The dogs had been fed commercial dog food and were otherwise healthy. The skin lesions resolved rapidly and completely with vitamin A therapy. Seven other dogs with similar lesions but with histopathologic findings not compatible with phrynoderma or follicular keratosis did not respond to vitamin A therapy.

Sebaceous glands are sebum-secreting components of pilosebaceous units. In the second of this two-part series, we review the pathologies in which sebaceous glands are primarily and secondarily implicated. They are primarily involved in steatocystoma simplex and multiplex, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, sebaceoma, sebaceous adenoma, sebaceous carcinoma, nevus sebaceus, and folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma. Sebaceous glands are secondarily involved in acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and androgenic alopecia. Steatocystoma multiplex is a benign congenital anomaly presenting as yellow cysts
