Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children worldwide, and an important cause of morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality. The infections caused by RSV are seasonal, peaking predictably in the winter months in temperate climates, and in the hottest months and the rainy season in tropical climates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1993 and December 1998, 117 children underwent percutaneous suprapubic lithotripsy in Arabia Felix Modern Hospital, Sana'a Republic of Yemen. Clinical data from 91 patients with rheumatic fever (RF), who were hospitalized at a tertiary hospital in Lebanon between 1980 and 1995, were reviewed retrospectively. Age on hospitalization was 11.1+/-2.9 years (mean +/- SD, range 3-17 years). Nineteen patients were <6 years of age. Manifestations included carditis (93%), arthritis (39%), Sydenham's chorea (2%), erythema marginatum (4%), subcutaneous nodules (1%), fever (62%), arthralgia (55%), and acute congestive heart failure (CHF) on initial presentation (44%). Ninety-six patients with congenital bleeding disorders were enrolled in a home treatment program from 1979 to 1997. The diagnosis included severe and moderate hemophilia A and B (n = 63), mild hemophilia A (n = 18), von Willebrand disease (vWD) (n = 12) and congenital factor VII deficiency (n = 3). The median age was 9 years and the median duration of follow-up was 4 3/12 years. This study reports our experience with 67 intrauterine transfusions (IUTs) carried out for 27 cases of severe Rh alloimmunization, which could be useful to other developing countries with similar situations. This paper analyzes changes in sex mortality ratios between 1979 and 1987 for adults in 23 developed countries. (A sex mortality ratio is the ratio of male to female death rates.) Acute retention of urine is a fairly common emergency problem in medical practice. Suprapubic diversion through a closed or open cystostomy is a standard procedure. In developing countries where there is paucity of skilled manpower and adequate facilities, patients' suffering may be unduly prolonged through delay. This simple cost-effective method was carried out in 15 patients without untoward morbidity. The procedure is particularly useful in rural communities where elaborate facilities are non-existent.

A report a given shout data of 11,874 deliveries and 12,338 childs which was born in 1987 in Central Hospital of Maputo PR of Mozambique. The perinatal mortality smouted to 65% and the maternal mortality 253%. Totally registrated a frequency of 15.2% of cesarean sections and observed in 30 cases a rupture of the uterus. Deliveries have been terminated in 2.8% by vaccum extraction and only in 0.1% by forceps. We observed a twin delivery in 458 cases or in 3.8% and a triplet delivery in 6 time. These data have been discussed in detail.

In an attempt to reduce the cesarean rate without adverse effect on outcome, new guidelines for the management of dystocia, previous cesarean delivery, fetal distress, and breech presentation were introduced in September 1984 in a provincial hospital in Zimbabwe, Africa. Comparison of the 2-year periods before and after September 1984 showed that the cesarean rate had dropped from 16.8 to 8.0%, the maternal mortality rate from 202 to 57 per 100,000 births, and the perinatal mortality rate from 71.9 to 56.2 per 1000 births. During the latter period, use of oxytocin increased from 3.4 to 17.4%.

A retrospective analysis was made of 27 maternal deaths after cesarean section occurring over a 5-year period. Sepsis was the single most important cause of maternal death (81.5%). The commonest indications for the cesarean sections were obstructed labor (59.3%) and cord prolapse (18.5%). The causes of maternal deaths were classified as avoidable and recommendations were made for their prevention.
