γ-Strontium carbodi-imide, γ-SrNCN, was synthesized from a mixture of strontium subnitride (Sr2N) and tetra-cyano-ethyl-ene (C6N4) at 38 (3) GPa in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Its crystal structure was solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The new polymorph crystallizes in space group I4/mcm (No. 140), where the Sr2+ and NCN2- packing can be derived from the CsCl (B2) structure type. γ-SrNCN (tI16-SrNCN) is isostructural to tI16-BaNCN and represents the first high-pressure polymorph of SrNCN.

Isochromosome 7q is not an uncommon chromosomal abnormality. It has been reported in association with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, Wilms tumor, and hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma. In other hematolymphoid malignancies, it occurs almost invariably as a secondary change. A notable example is its association with t(4;11)(q21;q23) in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It has rarely been described in myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. We report the occurrence of i(7q) as the primary abnormality in a 2-year-old boy with Down syndrome and minimally differentiated acute myeloid leukemia.

Ceramics are more and more frequently under consideration for construction of blood-contacting devices, i.e. cardiac valves or cardiac assist devices. This study evaluated the haemolysis eventually initiated in vitro by ceramic powders (Al2O3, ZrO2/Y2O3, AlN, B4C, BN, SiC, Si3 N4, TiB2, TiN, TiC), graphite and diamond. The chemical composition of the powders was studied by X-ray microprobe and various other methods, and BET specific areas were determined. The haemolysis was almost zero for all powders, except AlN which showed slight haemolysis and TiB2 which had high haemolytic power.

The amplitudes of the stapes footplate movements were determined in human temporal bones when the ossicular chain was drilled with a cutting and a diamond burr. High movements result in comparison to physiological data. The frequency distribution resembles the dB (A) curve. The intensity compared to sound pressure levels on the ear drum is higher than I30 dB. The pressure is constant over the period of contact between the burr and the ossicle. Most likely these unphysiologic movements of the stapes footplate can cause inner ear damage as we had to admit in a case of facial nerve decompression.
