BACKGROUND/AIMS: Thyroid hormones (THs) regulate many developmental processes, including the developmental onset of cochlear differentiation and function. TH action is mediated mostly by triiodothyronine (T3) bound to thyroid hormone nuclear receptors (TRs). The prevalence of parosmia and phantosmia among 363 chemosensory and nasal/sinus patients was studied, as was the accuracy with which our clinical questionnaire could assess these dysfunctions. We then investigated whether patients with parosmia or phantosmia, matched for odor intensity, perform poorer on odor identification than do patients with no dysosmia. The Gasperini syndrome is a cause of peripheral facial palsy: In the following case report, a 75-year-old woman is described who presented with a peripheral left facial palsy. On examination left beating nystagmus was found with contralateral loss of pain and temperature affecting the right side of the body but sparing the face. The signs and symptoms corresponded to the Gasperini syndrome caused by a lesion in the dorsal caudal pons in the region of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. MR imaging confirmed a lesion in this site.

We demonstrate the use of our miniature optical coherence tomography catheter to acquire three-dimensional human fallopian tube images. Images of the fallopian tube's tissue morphology, vasculature, and tissue heterogeneity distribution are enhanced by adaptive thresholding, masking, and intensity inverting, making it easier to differentiate malignant tissue from normal tissue.
