Associations between DSM-IV mental disorders and diabetes mellitus: a role for impulse control disorders and depression.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: No studies have evaluated whether the frequently observed associations between depression and diabetes could reflect the presence of comorbid psychiatric conditions and their associations with diabetes. We therefore examined the associations between a wide range of pre-existing Diagnostic Statistical Manual, 4th edition (DSM-IV) mental disorders with self-reported diagnosis of diabetes. METHODS: We performed a series of cross-sectional face-to-face household surveys of community-dwelling adults (n = 52,095) in 19 countries. The World Health Organization Composite Internationa

Increased trait-like impulsivity and course of illness in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity as a trait characteristic is increased in bipolar disorder and may be a core factor of the illness. We have investigated relationships between trait-like impulsivity, measured by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and demographic and illness-course characteristics of bipolar disorder. METHODS: We studied 114 subjects with bipolar disorder and 71 healthy comparison subjects. Diagnoses were based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. In addition to impulsivity, we examined age, education, gender, psychiatric symptoms, and characteristics related to cour

Schizophrenia and pathological gambling.

High rates of pathological gambling are found in psychiatric populations, including those with mood or substance use disorders. The extent to which individuals with schizophrenia exhibit the symptoms of pathological gambling has not been adequately investigated. This paper examines the case of a 40-year-old schizophrenic female with a four-year history of gambling. The characteristics of possible interactions between pathological gambling and schizophrenic symptom profiles are outlined in order to propose better treatments for this group of patients.

Problem gambling in Australian PTSD treatment-seeking veterans.

This study explored gambling among Australian veterans entering posttraumatic stress treatment programs (n = 153). Twenty-eight percent reached the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) criteria for probable problem gambling, as did 17% on the DSM-IV gambling scale (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Almost all problem gamblers reported gambling to escape problems in other areas of their lives. The strongest independent predictor of problem gambling was gambling weekly or more often on electronic gaming machines. There wa

The medicalization of compulsive buying.

Compulsive buying has recently been the subject of numerous articles from both consumer research and psychiatric perspectives. Identified by some researchers as a compulsion and by others as an addiction, common solutions to the problem have included drug treatments, participation in self-help groups and cognitive behaviour therapy. The purpose of this article is to examine critically the labelling of compulsive buying in terms of medicalization from the perspective of both medical and non-medical social control of "deviant" consumers. We suggest that the attempt to categorize compulsive buyin

The associations between childhood dance participation and adult disordered eating and related psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood dance participation and adult eating behavior and psychological health. METHODS: A total of 546 undergraduate females at a large Midwestern university completed questionnaires regarding eating behavior and associated features, depression, self-esteem, and body image. RESULTS: Women who participated in childhood dance are more likely to score higher on measures of bulimic behaviors than nondancers. In addition, childhood dancers indicated greater drive for thinness and poorer impulse control compared to nondancers. Furthermore, there wa

[Activation level and the mechanism of emotional control in patients with paranoid schizophrenia].

The group of 60 paranoid schizophrenics and pair-matched group of 60 healthy controls were studied. The level of activation was measured by LPT technique by R. E. Thayer, and J. Brzezinski's Questionnaire for Emotional Control was used. The results indicate no differences between the level of activation among paranoid schizophrenics and controls. Patients, in comparison to healthy subjects, showed low level of emotional control, undeveloped control of emotional expression, impulsiveness, the high threshold of emotional arousal, the lack of resistance to emotions, and low level of control of be

The Effect of Dopaminergic Medication on Impulse Control and Compulsive Behaviour: A Translational Perspective.

Dopaminergic medication used in disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD) and restless legs syndrome can cause impulsive-compulsive behaviour (ICB), often with strong negative effects on patients' quality of life. This narrative review presents translational evidence on iatrogenic ICB, taking findings from epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging and preclinical studies into consideration. Epidemiological and clinical studies find dopamine agonists with high D2/3-selectivity to be most strongly linked to ICB. Their effect on ICB has often been shown to be dose-dependent, but the impact of combini

Latent class analysis of gambling subtypes and impulsive/compulsive associations: Time to rethink diagnostic boundaries for gambling disorder?

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder has been associated with cognitive dysfunction and impaired quality of life. The current definition of non-pathological, problem, and pathological types of gambling is based on total symptom scores, which may overlook nuanced underlying presentations of gambling symptoms. The aims of the current study were (i) to identify subtypes of gambling in young adults, using latent class analysis, based on individual responses from the Structured Clinical Interview for Gambling Disorder (SCI-GD); and (ii) to explore relationships between these gambling subtypes, and clinica

Pharmacologic treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder comorbidity.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clearly a heterogeneous syndrome in which comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception and is often 'phase-specific'. Comorbid conditions have a negative impact on OCD outcome and may clearly impact the disease trajectory. Nevertheless, in the current literature there is an impressive neglect of comorbidities in clinical trials and treatment approaches for these conditions are still not evidence-based. AREAS COVERED: In this paper we summarized the available data on the treatment of the main OCD comorbidities (mood and anxiety disorder

Reconsideration of the factorial structure of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11): Assessment of impulsivity in a large population of euthymic bipolar patients.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is commonly assessed using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). Some studies challenged the reliability of its three dimensional structure and proposed a bi-dimensional structure. METHODS: The psychometric reliability of the BIS-11 scale was studied in a sample of 580 euthymic bipolar patients. An alternative structure of the scale was conceived, using confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA) in the first half (N = 290) and cross-validated in the second half of our sample. Associations between the newly defined shortened scale and predefined clinical variables were c

Excoriation disorder: impulsivity and its clinical associations.

Excoriation disorder is the repetitive scratching or picking of skin that leads to physical damage, distress, and functional impairment. Skin picking has been associated with impulsivity and problems with inhibition. We hypothesized that problems in these areas could be disease severity markers. We recruited 73 adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for excoriation disorder, and 50 adult controls. Those with excoriation disorder were categorized as either "high impulsive" (HI) or "low impulsive" (LI) using either a neurocognitive task of motor impulsivity (Stop Signal Task) or the Barratt Impulsiveness

[Impulse control disorder: patients with pituitary adenomas and dopaminergic agonists].

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorder suggests a fronto-striatal dysfunction that impairs executive metacognitive abilities, as a result of dopamine receptor activation. Dopaminergic agonists serve as adjuvant therapy in pituitary adenomas. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequency of impulse control disorder in patients with pituitary adenomas treated with dopaminergic agonists. METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical study; ≥ 18 years old, diagnosed with pituitary adenoma, and receiving dopaminergic agonist treatment. The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) was used. Beyond motor fluctuations: Understanding the clinical correlates of OFF burden in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundHistorically, OFF burden in Parkinson's disease has been primarily attributed to motor features. Recent studies highlight that non-motor symptoms, and the predictability of OFF episodes also drive functional impairment, yet they are rarely measured in clinical practice.ObjectiveTo identify which clinical features are most closely associated with OFF time and OFF impact, and to quantify the added explanatory value of temporal predictability, non-motor, and behavioural domains beyond a core motor model.MethodsWe analysed 1252 OFF-only visits from 430 PPMI participants. Outcomes were MD

Imaging of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are frequent and cumbersome behavioral disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Understanding their pathophysiological underpinnings is crucial. Molecular imaging using positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) clearly indicates preexisting vulnerability and abnormal sensitization of the pre- and postsynaptic dopaminergic system. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies reveal abnormal connectivity within the reward system involving the ventral striatum and orbitofrontal cortex. These altera

Individual in Context: The Role of Impulse Control on the Association between the Home, School, and Neighborhood Developmental Contexts and Adolescent Delinquency.

Social ecological theories and decades of supporting research suggest that contexts exert a powerful influence on adolescent delinquency. Individual traits, such as impulse control, also pose a developmental disadvantage to adolescents through increasing risk of delinquency. However, such individual differences may also predispose some youth to struggle more in adverse environments, but also to excel in enriched environments. Despite the prominence of impulse control in both developmental and criminological literatures, researchers are only beginning to consider impulse control as an individua

The assessment of skin picking in adolescence: psychometric properties of the Skin Picking Scale-Revised (German version).

BACKGROUND: Skin picking disorder has received growing attention since the release of DSM-5, yet there are no evidence-based assessment instruments for adolescent samples. AIM: The present study examines the psychometric properties of the Skin Picking Scale-Revised (SPS-R, German version) in adolescents. METHODS: A total of 76 adolescents (96% female) completed the SPS-R, the Clinical Psychological Diagnostic System (KPD-38), and a questionnaire assessing demographics and clinical characteristics online. RESULTS: The SPS-R had high internal consistency (α = 0.89) and significant small-to-me

An Open Pilot Study of Training Hostile Interpretation Bias to Treat Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability in disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) may be associated with a biased tendency to judge ambiguous facial expressions as angry. We conducted three experiments to explore this bias as a treatment target. We tested: 1) whether youth with DMDD express this bias; 2) whether judgment of ambiguous faces can be altered in healthy youth by training; and 3) whether such training in youth with DMDD is associated with reduced irritability and associated changes in brain function. METHODS: Participants in all experiments made happy versus angry judgments of faces that va
