A 7-year-old male Persian cat was referred for necropsy examination a with history of progressive abdominal distention, dysuria, polyuria, colic and death. At necropsy examination, a raised white unencapsulated mass (3×6×4cm) was found on the mucosal surface of the bladder. The mass was lobulated with soft consistency similar to that of adipose tissue. Microscopical examination revealed cells identical to those of normal adipose tissue. On the basis of the gross and microscopical findings, the lesion was diagnosed as a lipoma. This tumour has not been recorded previously in the urinary bladder…

The relationship between bladder tumors and Schistosoma haematobium is well known, but only sporadic cases of bladder infection due to Schistosoma mansoni have been reported. In this case, a 48-year-old woman with macroscopic hematuria, dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass was investigated. Ultrasound showed a large exophytic mass in the bladder. Transurethral resection of the bladder revealed viable eggs of Schistosoma mansoni. The patient was treated clinically with oxamniquine and surgery was performed to resect the large mass. This case shows that schistosomiasis Mansoni in the bladder ca…

Hypopharyngeal cancers have a high propensity to distant metastasis. However, metastasis to the urinary bladder as an initial presentation of distant spread has not been reported in literature. We present a report of a patient with a treated and controlled pyriform sinus cancer who presented with complaints of dysuria, 8 months after completion of treatment. Cystoscopy revealed a bladder mass and biopsy confirmed it to be a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. On further investigation, the patient was found to have disseminated disease for which chemotherapy was instituted. A relevant review of…

Voiding urohydropropulsion is a nonsurgical method of removing uroliths from the urinary bladder. Any urocystolith of sufficient size to pass through the distended urethral lumen can be safely and effectively removed by this technique. Compared to cystotomy, voiding urohydropropulsion offers several advantages: urolith removal can be performed in minutes, anesthetic period is shorter, postprocedural dysuria and hematuria are less severe, and it provides greater success for complete removal of small urocystoliths. This technique is not suitable for removal of large urocystoliths or uroliths tha…

The Authors report a rare case of detrusor areflexia due to a sacral column chordoma characterized as initial symptomatology, by dysuria and recurrent urinary tract infections. The patient was treated for a long time in a symptomatic way by her physicians. The Authors while discussing the case, underline the importance of an accurate differential diagnostical framing in patients with voiding and/or anorectal dysfunctions of uncertain nature. This framing must exclude those voiding pathologies of neurological origin which are frequently evinced merely by an aspecific voiding symptomatology of d…

A case of sacral extradural arachnoid cyst associated with lumbar intradural arachnoid cyst in a 35-year-old male is reported. The patient presented with a history of severe sacrococcygeal pain, constipation, and dysuria for several months. Computed tomographic (CT) myelograms and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed a huge sacral cyst without neural components. A favorable outcome could be achieved by decompression of the cyst, obliteration of the fistulous channel between the cyst and the thecal sac, and fenestration of the arachnoid cyst into the subarachnoid space. The relevant li…

A 13-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a 5-day history of lower abdominal pain and dysuria that coincided with the onset of her last menstrual period. Menarche occurred 4 months previously and previous cycles were normal. The CAT scan of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a uterus didelphis with obstruction. Abdominal pain was due to hematocolpos and hematometra. The left hemivagina was distended with hematocolpos, and left renal agenesis was also noted. The vaginal septum was removed surgically without complications and she continued to be monitored closely.

A case of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the terminal ileum with enterovesical fistula is reported. A 50-year-old Malay man presented with haematuria, dysuria and per-rectal bleeding. Intravenous urogram, double contrast enema and an MDP bone scintigram showed a fistulous communication between the bladder and distal ileum. At laparotomy, a large tumour attaching the terminal ileum to the dome of the bladder was found. Histopathological examination of resected small bowel revealed a diffuse histiocytic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the small bowel. The bladder mucosa was shown to be normal.

A review of equine urolithiasis is presented. Special emphasis is placed on clinical diagnosis and management. Although somewhat uncommon, urolithiasis is a potentially serious condition with an apparent predilection for male horses. Although the entire urinary tract is at risk for urolith formation, the bladder and urethra are most commonly affected. The principal signs include stranguria, hematuria, and dysuria. Severe abdominal discomfort is often observed in patients suffering from distal urinary tract obstructions. If urolithiasis is promptly identified, a variety of surgical techniques m…

Four patients with gross hematuria and dysuria following intrusion of methylmethacrylate into the pelvic cavity after total hip replacement are described. This is a rare, benign complication which generally occurs 7-14 days after surgery and subsides promptly with symptomatic treatment. The diagnosis can be made on a simple radiography of the pelvis which shows the radiopaque cement as a mass intruding with the pelvic cavity. On the urogram it frequently abuts against or produces an extrinsic impression on the urinary bladder. This complication is very likely a result of the exothermal reactio…

This study reports a sporadic case of a 44-year-old male with congenital hypospadias complicated by a seminal vesicle cyst and accessory urethra. The patient presented with recurrent dysuria, and after undergoing laparoscopic seminal vesiculectomy combined with targeted anti-infective therapy, his symptoms were significantly relieved with favorable recovery. This case suggests that comprehensive imaging evaluation, individualized surgical planning, and long-term standardized follow-up are of great value in the diagnosis and treatment of such complex urinary system malformations.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate in adults is rare and often diagnosed at an advanced stage, with metastases. We report the case of a 23-year-old young adult presenting with low back pain and dysuria, whose imaging revealed a voluminous metastatic prostate mass. Biopsy confirmed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Treatment was initiated with chemotherapy, resulting in significant regression of the tumour mass and metastases after 3 courses. Pediatric advances suggest improved survival with a multimodal approach, but its efficacy in adults requires further investigation.

Actinomyces is a rare cause of prostatic abscess. Most reported cases of abdominal and pelvic actinomycosis are a consequence of invasive procedures or abdominal infections. In this report, we present a previously healthy 53-year-old man with inguinal pain, fever and dysuria who was found to have a prostate abscess, secondary to Actinomyces turicensis and Peptostreptococcus, which was removed via transurethral resection of the prostate. This case was complicated by Peptostreptococcus bacteremia and a facial abscess. The patient was treated with antibiotics and ultimately made a full recovery.

Doreen is a 79-year-old woman referred by her general practitioner to the ED for intravenous antibiotics for a urinary tract infection (UTI). She lives in a residential aged care facility (RACF) and staff report malodourous and cloudy urine. She denies dysuria or frequency. On examination Doreen is frail with vital signs of: temperature 37.7°C, pulse 87 bpm, blood pressure 130/70; there is no suprapubic or flank tenderness. Do you perform a dipstick test on Doreen’s urine for a suspected UTI?

A 7 yr old castrated male standard poodle weighing 25 kg was presented with a 5 day history of hematuria, dysuria, and the presence of a 2.5 cm, firm swelling within the prepuce. Abdominal radiographs revealed a soft-tissue mass on the distal prepuce and lysis of the cranial margin of the os penis. The patient was sedated and an ulcerated hemorrhagic mass was identified at the tip of the penis. The mass was diagnosed as hemangiosarcoma via incisional biopsy. A penile amputation with scrotal urethrostomy was performed followed by chemotherapy with doxorubicin.

A 43-year-old woman presented to our hospital with the chief complaints of gross hematuria and dysuria. Cystoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging showed a tumor on the dome of the bladder and large blood clots. Computed tomography demonstrated no findings of distant metastasis. Following transurethral resection of the tumor, the tumor was histologically diagnosed as myxofibrosarcoma with muscular invasion, and partial cystectomy was performed in September 2009. There has been no evidence of recurrence or metastasis for 24 months postoperatively. In addition, the Japanese literature on myxofibr…

Although the incidence is extremely rare in clinical practice, due to its highly aggressive behavior and a similar presentation as prostate cancer, the primary malignant melanoma of the prostate should be given more attention. We report a case in a 29-year-old male who presented with one-month history of dysuria. Based on clinical examination, ultrasound and computed tomography imaging, surgical operation and histopathological studies, a definitive diagnosis was made. Further characteristic images and pathology of this disease are discussed.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare disease of the bladder caused by gas-forming bacteria. Diabetics are the most commonly infected and the clinical picture ranges from dysuria to sepsis and peritonitis. The diagnosis is primarily radiological. Treatment ranges from catheterization and antibiotic treatment to prostatocystectomy. We report the case of a 74-year old male diabetic presenting who was found to have emphysematous cystitis with total necrotization of the bladder. To our knowledge this is the only reported case with a totally necrotized bladder in emphysematous cystitis.
