Condition optimization of iron-air fuel cell to treat phosphate-containing wastewater regarding sustainable development.

Increasing use of phosphorus products and excessive exploitation of phosphorus resources become two major problems in perspective of phosphorus sustainable development. Phosphorus recovery is the shortcut to solve this dilemma. Combining electrochemistry, an iron-air fuel cell was adopted to recover phosphate and electricity from phosphate-containing wastewater in our previous studies. The present study focused on investigating the effects of catholyte/anolyte conductivity, external resistance, and anolyte pH on the performance of iron-air fuel cell, and obtaining the optimized conditions. Electrophysiological Consequences of Cardiac Fibrosis.

For both the atria and ventricles, fibrosis is generally recognized as one of the key determinants of conduction disturbances. By definition, fibrosis refers to an increased amount of fibrous tissue. However, fibrosis is not a singular entity. Various forms can be distinguished, that differ in distribution: replacement fibrosis, endomysial and perimysial fibrosis, and perivascular, endocardial, and epicardial fibrosis. These different forms typically result from diverging pathophysiological mechanisms and can have different consequences for conduction. The impact of fibrosis on propagation dep

Electrochemically prepared composites of graphene oxide and conducting polymers: Cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neural progenitors.

The cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes derived from embryonic stem cells and neural progenitors, which were seeded on the surface of composite films made of graphene oxide (GO) and polypyrrole (PPy-GO) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-GO) are reported. The GO incorporated in the composite matrix contributes to the patterning of the composite surface, while the electrically conducting PPy and PEDOT serve as ion-to-electron transducers facilitating electrical stimulation/sensing. The films were fabricated by a simple one-step electropolymerization procedure on electrically conducting

Incidence and outcome of arrhythmias and electrical disease in patients with Trisomy 18.

Patients with Trisomy 18 have a high incidence of cardiac anomalies and are associated with early death. Because of early mortality, electrical system disease and arrhythmia has been difficult to delineate and the incidence remain unknown. We sought to describe the association and clinical outcomes of electrical system disease and cardiac tachy-arrhythmias in patients with Trisomy 18. This was a retrospective, single institutional study. All patients with Trisomy 18 were included in the study. Patient characteristics, congenital heart disease (CHD), conduction system and clinical tachy-arrhyth

Determination of transport properties in chromium disilicide nanowires via combined thermoelectric and structural characterizations.

The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity of individual chromium disilicide nanowires were characterized using a suspended microdevice and correlated with the crystal structure and growth direction obtained by transmission electron microscopy on the same nanowires. The obtained thermoelectric figure of merit of the nanowires was comparable to the bulk values. We show that combined Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity measurements provide an effective approach to probing the Fermi Level, carrier concentration and mobility in nanowires.

Electric activity of the rectosigmoid canal and its relation to rectal and sigmoid electric activity: an evidence of a sphincteric function of the rectosigmoid canal.

We have previously demonstrated that the rectosigmoid junction is more than a junction: it is a segment with a mean length of 2.8 cm which we termed the 'rectosigmoid canal' (RSC). Our data support the existence of a physiologic and anatomic sphincter at the RSC which regulates the passage of stools from the sigmoid colon (SC) to the rectum (R). In view of its sphincteric action we investigated the hypothesis that the RSC has a higher electric activity than that of the SC and R. The tests were performed during repair of huge incisional hernia in 11 subjects (age 46.7(12.5 years; 8 women). The

Studies of Intra-Chain and Inter-Chain Charge Carrier Conduction in Acid Doped Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Polystyrene Sulfonate Thin Films.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is a conductive water-processable polymer with many important applications in organic electronics. The electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS layers is very diverse and can be changed by changing the processing and post-deposition conditions, e.g., by using different solvent additives, doping or modifying the physical conditions of the layer deposition. Despite many years of intensive research on the relationship between the microstructure and properties of these layers, there are still gaps in our knowledge, especially with res

QRS morphology and electrical dyssynchrony in patients before and after cardiac resynchronization therapy and after device optimization.

INTRODUCTION: QRS morphology and duration (QRSd) impact electrical dyssynchrony and the likelihood of response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). METHODS: Four groups of heart failure patients (n = 181) with CRT and left ventricular conduction delay were studied: Strauss left bundle branch block (Strauss LBBB; n = 73), LBBB not meeting Strauss criteria (non-Strauss LBBB; n = 29), interventricular conduction delay (IVCD; n = 54), and right ventricular pacing (RVp; n = 25). Electrical dyssynchrony was measured (using a novel proprietary technology) as systolic area under the curve (AUC

Conductivity and permittivity imaging at 3.0T.

Tissue conductivity and permittivity are critical to understanding local radio frequency (RF) power deposition during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These electrical properties are also important in treatment planning of RF thermotherapy methods (e.g. RF hyperthermia). The electrical properties may also have diagnostic value as malignant tissues have been reported to have higher conductivity and higher relative permittivity than surrounding healthy tissue. In this study, we consider imaging conductivity and permittivity using MRI transmit field maps (B1+ maps) at 3.0 Tesla. We formulate eff

Advances in electroactive materials-based strategies for promoting skin wound healing.

The loss of homeostasis of the local microenvironment is one of the processes encountered in chronic wound repair and is therefore a big challenge in clinical practice. Endogenous electric fields, being important biophysical cues in the wound bed, guide the direction of movement of the reparative cells, control the inflammatory process and help in the regeneration of the tissues. The classical external electrical stimulation equipment is strongly limited in the portability that can be offered and in the biocompatibility that can be ensured, which limits the wider clinical application of electr

Electrophysiologic study demonstrating triple antegrade AV nodal pathways in patients with spontaneous and/or induced supraventricular tachycardia.

Ten patients are described with two discrete discontinuities in AV nodal conduction curves suggesting triple antegrade AV nodal pathways. This represents approximately 6% of patients seen in this laboratory with dual AV nodal pathways. Patients ranged in age from 18 to 63 (mean +/- SD, 48 +/- 15 years). Six of the 10 patients had organic heart disease and four did not. The effect of cycle length on triple pathways could be analyzed in 8 of 10 patients who had atrial extrastimulus testing at two or more cycle lengths. Three of these eight patients had triple pathways at all tested cycle lengths

Gradient Films of Pristine Graphene/Pyrene-Functional Copolymers with Janus Electrical Properties.

We describe the first preparation of polymer-supported pristine graphene thin films with dramatically different electrical conductivities on the top and bottom surfaces. Pyrene-functional stabilizers based on polystyrene or poly(methyl methacrylate) were first synthesized by copolymerization of their monomers with 1-pyrenemethyl methacrylate. Stable dispersions of pristine graphene nanosheets were prepared by sonication of graphite in chloroform solutions of the pyrene-functional copolymers. Vacuum filtration of the polymer-stabilized graphene dispersions through a porous PTFE filter produces

Gene transfer of connexin43 mutants attenuates coupling in cardiomyocytes: novel basis for modulation of cardiac conduction by gene therapy.

Modification of electrical conduction would be a useful principle to recruit in preventing or treating certain arrhythmias, notably ventricular tachycardia (VT). Here we pursue a novel gene transfer approach to modulate electrical conduction by reducing gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) and hence potentially modify the arrhythmia substrate. The ultimate goal is to develop a nondestructive approach to uncouple zones of slow conduction by focal gene transfer. Lentiviral vectors encoding connexin43 (Cx43) internal loop mutants were produced and studied in vitro. Transduction of ne

Indazole inhibition of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator Cl(-) channels in rat epididymal epithelial cells.

Previous studies have shown that two indazole compounds, lonidamine [1-(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)-indazole-3-carboxylic acid] and its analogue AF2785 [(1-(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)-indazol-3-acrylic acid], suppress fertility in male rats. We also found that these compounds inhibit the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator chloride (CFTR-Cl(-)) current in epididymal epithelial cells. To further investigate how lonidamine and AF2785 inhibit the current, we used a spectral analysis protocol to study whole-cell CFTR current variance. Application of lonidamine or AF2785 to the extracellular membr

Immuno and functional characterization of CFTR in submandibular and pancreatic acinar and duct cells.

Cystic fibrosis results from defective Cl- channel activity mediated by the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene product. In the gastrointestinal tract this is manifested in abnormal salivary secretion and pancreatic insufficiency. This is generally attributed to defective Cl- transport by the ductal system of the glands. We provide the first immunocytochemical and functional evidence for expression of CFTR protein and Cl- current in rat and mouse submandibular gland (SMG) and pancreatic acinar cells, a site proximal to the ductal system of these secretory glands. Microelectrode measurements of the effects of basolateral adenosine in polarized human intestinal epithelial cells in culture.

Activation of the basolateral receptor for adenosine in HT-29cl.19A cells, by 100 microM adenosine, increased the equivalent short-circuit current (DeltaIsc= 24+/-2 microA/cm2), depolarized the intracellular potential (DeltaVa= 26+/-2 mV) and decreased the fractional apical membrane resistance (DeltafRa=-0.48). The changes in all parameters reached their peak values simultaneously. This suggests that the primary action of the adenosine-activated pathway is on only one membrane. Bumetanide inhibited the transepithelial response and repolarized the cell potential. After preincubation with 100 mi

A rare form of extremely wide QRS complex due to reversed homologous electrical ventricular separation of acute heart failure.

Electrical ventricular separation, as a special complete intraventricular block, denotes that ventricles be electrically separated into two or more parts caused by severe and wide damage of myocardium and conduction. Electrical ventricular separation can be divided into homologous and heterologous, homologous electrical ventricular separation is a rare phenomenon, literally the excitement of whole ventricle originate from supraventricle, on ECG, there are two different QRS waves which connect with an isoelectric line, one ST segment and T wave. Stimulus history reliably shapes action potential waveforms of cortical neurons.

Action potentials have been shown to shunt synaptic charge to a degree that depends on their waveform. In this way, they participate in synaptic integration, and thus in the probability of generating succeeding action potentials, in a shape-dependent way. Here we test whether the different action potential waveforms produced during dynamical stimulation in a single cortical neuron carry information about the conductance stimulus history. When pyramidal neurons in rat visual cortex were driven by a conductance stimulus that resembles natural synaptic input, somatic action potential waveforms sh

Evidence for a bulbospinal serotonergic pressor pathway in the rat brain.

The cardiovascular role of spinal serotonin (5-HT) neurones descending from 5-HT cells near the ventrolateral surface of the medulla oblongata was investigated by stimulating these cells in normal animals and in animals with selective chemical ablation of 5-HT nerves. These laterally placed 5-HT nerves fall within the B1 and B3 groups in the medulla and were identified using immunohistochemistry. 5,7-Dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) to produce a generalized destruction of central 5-HT pathways, with preliminary intraperitoneal administrati
