Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), cognitive style, and the temporal dynamics of frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in recurrently depressed patients.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), a meditation-based maintenance therapy, reduces the relapse risk in individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). However, only a few studies investigated the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this protective effect. We examined effects of MBCT on trait rumination and mindfulness, as indicators of global cognitive style, as well as on residual depressive symptoms in a group of recurrently depressed patients (n=78) in remission. Additionally, alpha asymmetry in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) was assessed. Alpha asymmetr

Caffeine challenge in insomniac patients after total sleep deprivation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study compared the effects of caffeine in patients with primary insomnia and normal volunteers. The main goal was to determine the differences in sensitivity to caffeine between the groups. We investigated the effects on daytime sleep of placebo or caffeine after a night of total sleep deprivation (SD). We hypothesized that insomniacs would be more affected by caffeine, which would suggest a change in adenosine receptor (number or sensitivity) in primary insomniacs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six primary insomnia patients (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Di

The effects of scopolamine and cyclizine on visual-vestibular interaction in humans.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of scopolamine (1.5 mg, transdermal patch) and cyclizine (50 mg tablet), at the doses usually used for the relief of motion sickness, on postural sway, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and circularvection (CV) in humans, using a within-subjects, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Scopolamine and cyclizine were found to have no significant suppressive effect on these aspects of visual-vestibular interaction. Postural sway and CV were not significantly affected by either drug treatment; OKN SPV was significantly increased (p < 0.05), a

Square wave jerks in parkinsonian syndromes.

The frequency of square wave jerks (SWJ) was compared in eight patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 25 patients with multiple system atrophy or Parkinson's disease plus (MSA/PP), 85 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and 20 age-matched normal volunteers. In the control group, the mean (SD) SWJ frequency (SWJ larger than 1 degree amplitude) was 2.3 (2.4)/min. Abnormal ocular fixation (SWJ frequency greater than 10/min) was observed in a large proportion of PSP patients (7/8) and of MSA/PP patients (16/25) but in few PD patients (13/85). In the group of PD patients

Automatic sleep classification using a data-driven topic model reveals latent sleep states.

BACKGROUND: The golden standard for sleep classification uses manual scoring of polysomnography despite points of criticism such as oversimplification, low inter-rater reliability and the standard being designed on young and healthy subjects. NEW METHOD: To meet the criticism and reveal the latent sleep states, this study developed a general and automatic sleep classifier using a data-driven approach. Spectral EEG and EOG measures and eye correlation in 1s windows were calculated and each sleep epoch was expressed as a mixture of probabilities of latent sleep states by using the topic model L

Handedness-related cortical modulation of the vestibular-ocular reflex.

Multisensory visuo-vestibular cortical areas are important for spatial orientation and facilitate the control of the brainstem-mediated vestibular ocular reflex (VOR). Despite reports of visual input and cognitive tasks modulating the VOR through cortical control, it is unknown whether higher-order visual stimuli such as bistable perception and attention tasks involving visual imagery have an effect on the VOR. This is a possibility since such stimuli recruit cortical areas overlapping with those engaged during vestibular activation. Here we used a novel paradigm in which human subjects view b

Neurofeedback training for tourette syndrome: an uncontrolled single case study.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by motor and vocal tic manifestations, often accompanied by behavioral, cognitive and affective dysfunctions. Electroencephalography of patients with TS has revealed reduced Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) and excessive fronto-central Theta activity, that presumably underlie motor and cognitive disturbances in TS. Some evidence exists that neurofeedback (NFB) training aimed at enhancing SMR amplitude is effective for reducing tics. The present report is an uncontrolled single case study where a NFB training protocol, involving combined SMR uptrain

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex during whole body yaw rotation in standing subjects: the role of head position and neck proprioception.

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied during whole body yaw rotation in the dark at different static head positions. Rotations consisted of four cycles of symmetric sinusoidal and asymmetric oscillations. Self-motion perception was evaluated by measuring the ability of subjects to manually track a static remembered target. VOR was recorded separately and the slow phase eye position (SPEP) was computed. Three different head static yaw deviations (active and passive) relative to the trunk (0°, 45° to right and 45° to left) were examined. Active head deviations had

A pilot study of sleep, cognition, and respiration under 4 weeks of intermittent nocturnal hypoxia in adult humans.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A pilot study to examine the effects of intermittent nocturnal hypoxia on sleep, respiration and cognition in healthy adult humans. METHODS: Participants were eight healthy, non-smoking subjects (four male, four female), mean age of 26.4+/-5.2 years, and BMI 22.3+/-2.6 kg/m(2), exposed to 9h of intermittent hypoxia between the hours of 10 P.M. and 7 A.M. for 28 consecutive nights. At a simulated altitude of 13,000 feet (FIO(2) 0.13), intermittent hypoxia was achieved by administering nasal nitrogen, alternating with brief (approximately 5s) boluses of nasal oxygen. Pre- and

Immediate consequences of respiratory events in sleep disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: In obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, immediate physiological consequences of events have a dual role: censoring artifacts and gauging physiological significance. Newer airflow monitors may have changed the relative importance of these functions. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and hierarchy of occurrence of oxygen desaturation, EEG arousal and heart rate changes as immediate consequences of respiratory events. METHODS: Thirty-nine sleep apnea patients underwent polysomnography with airflow detection by nasal cannula. Eighty events/subject were ran

ERP differences among subtypes of pervasive developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD) have been distinguished from autistic children on the basis of chart reviews. It was questioned whether it is possible to find other, e.g., event-related potential (ERP), evidence for this assertion. METHODS: ERPs were measured in response to stimuli in a visual oddball task in autistic, MCDD, attention deficit disorder, dyslexic, and normal control children, to study whether ERP peaks can be used to distinguish autistic and MCDD children, and to classify the aforementioned groups. RESULTS: It was found that the P3 at f

The N400 in a semantic categorization task across 6 decades.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the effects of normal aging on the amplitude, latency and scalp distribution of the N400 congruity effect. METHODS: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 72 adults (half of them men) between the ages of 20 and 80 years (12/decade) as they performed a semantic categorization task. Participants listened to spoken phrases (e.g. 'a type of fruit' or 'the opposite of black') followed about 1 s later by a visually-presented word that either did or did not fit with the sense of the preceding phrase; they reported the word read and whether or not it was

Perceptual studies in patients with vestibular neurectomy.

Twelve patients undergoing unilateral vestibular neurectomy for the treatment of refractory vertigo were investigated. Vestibular motion perception was assessed using a self-rotational task and "vestibular remembered saccades". Cervical perception was also measured with remembered saccades. The tests were performed pre- and post-operatively to examine changes in vestibular and cervical perception following an acute vestibular lesion, and to monitor the progress of vestibular compensation. These perception tests were carried out in conjunction with a conventional evaluation of the vestibular oc

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in snorers with sleep apneas: predictive value of presurgical polysomnography.

To determine its predictive value, polysomnography was performed on 14 snorers with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) before and 3 months after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). In the 8 patients considered as cured (less than 10 apneas per hour after UPPP), total apnea index (TAI) decreased from 29.7 +/- 22.6 to 4.9 +/- 3.5. Rapid eye movement sleep (REM) increased from 10.9 +/- 3.6 to 14 +/- 5.7% of the total sleep period (TSP). In the 6 uncured patients, TAI decreased from 59.7 +/- 15.7 to 32 +/- 15.7 and REM increased from 7.7 +/- 5.6 to 15.8 +/- 7.2% of TSP. Snoring and drowsiness decreased in b
