Cystic diseases of the biliary tract encompass a complex group of congenital disorders. Some of the disorders, such as Caroli disease and the hepatobiliary cysts of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease, share common embryologic origins, whereas others, such as choledochal cysts, biliary diverticula, and choledochoceles, have unclear origins. This article reviews the embryologic, clinical, pathologic, and imaging features of biliary cystic disease.

Chiari II malformations and holoprosencephaly have been considered to be brain malformations that differ with respect to teratogenic insult, embryologic mechanism, and morphology. We herein describe coexistent Chiari II malformation and holoprosencephaly that occurred in a viable infant. A review of the literature regarding Chiari II malformations and holoprosencephaly suggests that a disturbance to the mesenchyme in early embryologic life may be the cause of both malformations.

BACKGROUND: Malrotation of the bowel due to imperfect embryologic development is a rare condition with a wide spectrum of resulting anatomical variations. Similar conditions are achieved in the adult by derotating the bowel via the Cattell-Braasch maneuver. However, possible preparational bias might compromise the resulting topography.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of atypical malrotation of the bowel in a cadaver study using a 96-year-old Caucasian male specimen with incidental finding of the pathology post mortem with no known surgical intervention in the abdomen during his lifetime.

BACKGROUND: The undescended inferior parathyroid gland is a well-established although infrequent embryologic abnormality resulting in an ectopically located gland usually associated with thymic tissue and is found most commonly within the carotid sheath at the level of the carotid bifurcation. We describe CT and MR findings in a 23-month-old infant with a melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of the pineal gland. The tumour has been stereotactically biopsied and surgically resected. The pathological diagnosis was made on the resected piece. Embryology of the pineal gland and the histology of melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy are discussed.

The cholecystohepatic duct of Luschka is demonstrated. This anomaly directly connects the gallbladder to the bile ducts, draining a portion of the right lobe of the liver. The pertinent embryology is reviewed. When accidentally severed, it may cause a bile leak leading to biloma formation. It should be recognized before surgery to alert the surgeon.

Cutaneous and subcutaneous cysts with ciliated pseudostratified columnar (respiratory) epithelium present a diagnostic dilemma. We report a case of a bronchogenic cyst occurring on the back. The differential diagnosis includes branchial cleft cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, cutaneous ciliated cyst, and mature cystic teratoma. We review reports of extrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts and discuss their possible embryology.
