Genomic approach to investigate air pollution's causal impact on neurodevelopment and mental health: An extensive-scale 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Air pollution is a major global public health threat associated with increased morbidity and premature mortality. Growing evidence suggests that air pollution may also adversely affect brain health, contributing to cognitive impairment and mental disorders. However, most existing studies are observational and therefore vulnerable to residual confounding and reverse causation. Mendelian randomization (MR), which uses genetic variants as instrumental variables, offers a framework to strengthen causal inference regarding the neurological effects of air pollution. We conducted a 2-sample MR study

A multi-model LLM framework for AI-assisted psychological scale development: initial psychometric evaluation of the Emotion Regulation Scale (ERS).

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation is a key construct in mental health, yet existing measures differ in conceptual coverage, with some focusing on specific strategies or regulatory difficulties rather than broader cognitive, behavioral, and contextual regulation processes. This study aimed to develop an Emotion Regulation Scale (ERS) grounded in Gross's Process Model, using large language models (LLMs) as assistive tools within an established psychometric framework. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 743 adults recruited through convenience sampling. Participants were randomly divided in

The relations between social anxiety and social intelligence: a latent variable analysis.

Social anxiety has been associated with biases in cognitive processing and deficits in social performances. Yet, it remains unclear if these variations may be partly attributable to deficits in fundamental social abilities: for example, social intelligence (SI). Using the Magdeburg Test of Social Intelligence (MTSI) as an objective and performance based SI measure, we examined the relationship between social anxiety and SI in a general population sample (N=110) using Structural Equation Modeling. Dimensions of social anxiety as postulated by Clark and Wells (1995) and facets of SI (social unde

[Violent video games and aggression: long-term impact and selection effects].

This study applied social-cognitive models of aggression in order to examine relations between video game use and aggressive tendencies and biases in social information processing. To this end, 499 secondary school students (aged 12-16) completed a survey on two occasions one year apart. Hierarchical regression analysis probed media effects and selection effects and included relevant contextual variables (parental monitoring of media consumption, impulsivity, and victimization). Results revealed that it was not the consumption of violent video games but rather an uncontrolled pattern of video

Social competence intervention for youth with Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism: an initial investigation.

Individuals with high functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger Syndrome (AS) exhibit difficulties in the knowledge or correct performance of social skills. This subgroup's social difficulties appear to be associated with deficits in three social cognition processes: theory of mind, emotion recognition and executive functioning. The current study outlines the development and initial administration of the group-based Social Competence Intervention (SCI), which targeted these deficits using cognitive behavioral principles. Across 27 students age 11-14 with a HFA/AS diagnosis, results indicated signif

Intellectual and emotional sequelae of Reye's Syndrome.

Previous reports on survivors of Reye's syndrome have indicated a high proportion of significant neurological and intellectual sequelae. However, increasingly sophisticated monitoring and therapeutic techniques have diminished both the mortality and morbidity of this disease. Our present study documented the relatively good intellectual and neurological prognosis for recent survivors of Reye's at our institution and explored the emotional impact of this illness on survivor's families. The significant emotional problems of the children and their families were in striking contrast to the relativ

"The show must go on": Aftermath of Covid-19 on anesthesiology residency programs.

COVID-19 has caused tectonic changes in the personal and professional lives of anesthesiologists and, among several aspects, anesthesiology residency and sub-specialty training has also undergone an unforeseen overhaul. We read the articles published on the impact of COVID-19 on training of anesthesiologists and set out to extract and narrate all the significant observations. At the outset, we begin by explaining how this pandemic posed a threat to the safety of the residents and mitigating measures like PPE and barriers that have now become 'the new normal'. Sub-specialties like critical care

Effects of music therapy in the treatment of children with delayed speech development - results of a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Language development is one of the most significant processes of early childhood development. Children with delayed speech development are more at risk of acquiring other cognitive, social-emotional, and school-related problems. Music therapy appears to facilitate speech development in children, even within a short period of time. The aim of this pilot study is to explore the effects of music therapy in children with delayed speech development. METHODS: A total of 18 children aged 3.5 to 6 years with delayed speech development took part in this observational study in which music t

Neurophysiological markers that predict and track treatment outcomes in childhood anxiety.

The present study examined the cortical processes that mediate cognitive regulation in response to emotion-eliciting stimuli, before and after anxious children participated in a cognitive behavioral therapy program. Electroencephalographic activity was recorded from anxious children (n = 24, 8 males) and comparison children (n = 16, 7 males) at pre-and post-treatment sessions. The change in anxiety T-scores from pre- to post-treatment was used to signify clinical improvement among anxious children (Improvers: n = 11 vs. Non-improvers: n = 13). Event-related potential components were recorded w

Functional dissociation of amygdala-modulated arousal and cognitive appraisal, in Turner syndrome.

The amygdala is preferentially activated by facial expressions of fear. Right and left amygdala are hypothesized to play distinct, but complementary, roles that influence somatic and cognitive responses to facial expressions. Right amygdala activation is linked to autonomic arousal, and thus indirectly influences left hemisphere cognitive processing centres. Left amygdala activation is more closely associated with cognitive processing and differentiation of facial emotions. A double-dissociation between the functions of left and right amygdala is implied by lesion studies but supportive eviden

AI-powered analysis of affective dimensions in speech and its relevance for FTD diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Affective disturbances are common across behavioral variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD), primary psychiatric disorders (PPD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Objective markers are needed for differential and transdiagnostic characterization. We tested whether artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis of natural speech could provide such markers. METHODS: Speech from 112 participants (bvFTD = 31, AD = 28, PPD = 15, controls = 39) was analyzed using a fine-tuned speech emotion recognition model estimating valence, arousal, dominance, and entropy. Group differences were ass

A Review of Voice-Based Pain Detection in Adults Using Artificial Intelligence.

Pain is a complex and subjective experience, and traditional methods of pain assessment can be limited by factors such as self-report bias and observer variability. Voice is frequently used to evaluate pain, occasionally in conjunction with other behaviors such as facial gestures. Compared to facial emotions, there is less available evidence linking pain with voice. This literature review synthesizes the current state of research on the use of voice recognition and voice analysis for pain detection in adults, with a specific focus on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learnin

The cerebro-cerebellar system: Integrative roles in motor control, cognition, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The cerebro-cerebellar system, a network of bidirectional loops between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex, is crucial for coordinating motor control, cognition, and emotion. Moving beyond its traditional role in motor coordination, contemporary research underscores the cerebellum's significant involvement in higher-order functions, including executive control, language, and social cognition. This review synthesizes current anatomical, functional, and clinical evidence to delineate the cerebellum's role in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum

[Is emotional dysregulation a component of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?].

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents. It is characterized by age-inappropriate inattention/impulsiveness and/or hyperactivity symptoms. ADHD shows a high comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), a disorder that features symptoms of emotional lability. Due to this comorbidity, emotional lability was long considered a secondary consequence of ADHD, which could arise under the influence of environmental factors such as inefficient parenting practices, as part of an ODD diagnosis.
