In a routine PPD skin test among 1st grade pupils in 4 elementary schools, Fukushima prefecture in April 1989, the number of pupils that showed strongly positive was unusually high. Moreover, 2 tuberculosis cases were detected among them. Since those children graduated the same kindergarten, and one of 6 kindergarten teachers had been complaining cough and hoarseness for about 3 to 5 months before being diagnosed as a smear positive patient in the contact survey, she was suspected to be the source of infection. Meanwhile, she had been treated for common cold and chronic bronchitis in several c

The American population developed, during thousands of years, free of epidemics that had been attacking Europe, Asia and Africa. The European and African migrations, after Columbus's first trip, produced an epidemic invasion of influenza, smallpox, measles, yellow fever, malaria, diphtheria, typhus, and other diseases that attacked the immunologically virgin populations and produced a very high mortality, with a diminution of the indigenous population of more than 90% in many places. According to historical evidence, the first epidemic was influenza, produced by swine strain of virus, immediat…

BACKGROUND: Cuba's response to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has been to conduct mass testing of the population to ascertain seroprevalence, to enforce mandatory relative quarantine of persons testing positive, and to implement educational interventions using media and school-based programs.
METHODS: Interview with the Vice-Minister of Health and review of available data.
RESULTS: Reports to date show a very low seroprevalence rate without evidence of a widespread epidemic. Sexual contact with foreign-born persons is the primary risk factor. Possible advantages of Cuba's po

Presented are personal observations of 5 patients after corneal grafting who exhibited signs of graft disease in the course of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in Autumn 1987. Clinical signs and methods of procedure are discussed. In one case the graft partially opacified due to an additional trauma.

Two case reports are presented in which patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) develop symblepharon during the course of their infection. This report is the initial documentation of symblepharon formation in EKC and the first reported episode of conjunctival membrane formation in association with adenovirus type 2.

The article describes a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium infection in 1987 caused by contaminated chocolate products from one particular factory. A total of 349 bacteriologically verified cases were recorded. It was estimated, however, that 20,000-40,000 persons became ill during the outbreak. We describe the epidemiological and bacteriological investigations which led to identification of the source of infection, and discuss two epidemiological models for investigation of food-borne outbreaks. The article emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the community health ser

Ectopic pregnancy has become a major health problem in terms of its morbidity and its impact on health care resources. In a case-control study involving 40 black patients, the odds ratio of developing ectopic pregnancy in current and former intrauterine device users is 11.7, which is statistically significant. The odds ratio for patients with a history of pelvic inflammatory disease is 4.4, which is statistically insignificant. A review of the current literature indicates Chlamydia salpingitis as the major cause of the ectopic epidemic. Prompt and effective treatment of this venereal disease m

An outbreak of legionnaires' disease and epidemic control measures taken at one of our hotels are described. Twenty (1% morbidity) hotel guests were affected with one dying. As a result of field investigations and survey the hot water supply system has been identified as the source of infection. Control measures which created conditions unfavourable to Legionella growth and replication in the hot water system stopped the outbreak.

Manifestations of the epidemic process of a parotitis infection can be explained by the theory of the self regulation of parasitic systems. A characteristic feature of epidemic parotitis is the formation of epidemic foci in the absence of parotitis cases and without the penetration of the infective agent from the outside. The epidemic wave of parotitis infection decreases as the virulence of the infective agent attenuates due to its passage through persons gaining immunity in the course of the epidemic. The avirulent infective agent persists in the body of some immune carriers till a sufficien

Epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma, a neoplasm associated with AIDS, is rapidly becoming common in the United States and Europe. The pathogenesis of this form of Kaposi's sarcoma has not yet been fully understood, but epidemiological clues point to the possibility that an infectious agent (in addition to the AIDS virus HTLV-III) or an environmental toxin may be involved. The natural history and clinical course of epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma is variable. The life expectancy of an AIDS patient with Kaposi's sarcoma is probably related to his underlying immunologic status as evidenced by propensity to devel
