Eleven hips in nine patients with Perthes' disease were studied by plain radiography at 3-month and MRI at 6-month intervals over a period of 2 years. Early closure of the epiphysis of the femoral head and of the triradiate cartilage of the acetabulum is reported in two young children following uneventful surgery for correction of deformities caused by congenital hip dislocation. Such epiphyseal arrests cause severe deformities, which frequently cannot be totally corrected. The reasons for epiphyseal arrest of the triradiate cartilage of the acetabulum following a Salter pelvic osteotomy and epiphyseal arrest of the femoral head following a subtrochanteric osteotomy are not known.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is widely used to treat musculoskeletal diseases, but its impact on adolescents with unhealed epiphyseal plates is concerning. It remains unclear whether ESWT applied to growth plates promotes or inhibits bone growth. Low energy ESWT does not cause damage of articular cartilage and promotes the growth of articular cartilage. Chondrodysplasia punctata is a peroxisomal disorder which is a form of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. It is characterized by calcifications of unossified cartilaginous epiphyseal centers during the first year of life. Severe autosomal recessive rhisomelic form shows bilateral proximal shortening of the upper and lower limbs with punctate epiphyseal calcifications. We report radiological findings of a patient with rhisomelic chondrodysplasia punctata. Magnetic resonance imaging showed foramen magnum stenosis that caused spinal cord compression.

We made a radiographic study of 104 unilateral congenital dislocations of the hip (CDH) that had an average age of 12 months (range 4-24), were treated with the same therapeutic protocol, and had an average six years follow-up (range 3-13). Radiographic changes were evident in the proximal femoral epiphysis in 57 hips (55%). Three calves from a herd of beef cattle were examined because of disproportionate dwarfism and excessive extension of metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints.
