Tonsillectomy tissue can be used as a routine source for cultures of oropharyngeal keratinocytes. In so doing, a peritonsillar strip of unaltered mucosa was dissected in the upper submucosa. Subsequent trypsinization yielded 7.0 +/- 3.4 x 10(6) keratinocytes per bilateral tonsillectomy. Keratinocyte attachment and growth in primary culture were promoted by sublethally irradiated 3T3 murine fibroblasts. Chronic periodontitis can be successfully simulated in primates by the method employed in this study. Osseous defects can be created with a … e alone. This rapid filling of the osseous defects may serve to inhibit the apical migration of the epithelial attachment during the early stages of repair, and thereby inhibit a subsequent recurrence of the defect. Clinically and histologically, no readily apparent distinction could be made in the healing process between the two- and three-walled lesions.

Coxsackievirus A24 variant (CVA24v) is responsible for several outbreaks and two pandemics of the highly contagious eye infection acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC). We present a case of a 33-year-old man with a noninvasive thymoma undergoing extensive cystic degeneration. The mediastinal tumor was asymptomatic and first noted on a routine chest radiograph. A patient with a previous medical history of immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) presented with persistent red and ulcerated lesions on her attached gingiva. Despite the obvious long standing gingival inflammation, minimal destruction of alveolar bone had occurred. Following failure of the tissues to respond to routine periodontal therapy, a gingival biopsy was taken. Histological assessment of the specimen revealed several features in common with the intestinal lesions seen in IPSID. In particular, a large plasma cell infiltrate subjacent to the gingival epithelium was noted.

In this study, fine structural features of the pocket walls in rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and adult periodontitis (AP) in 20 cases were compared using light and transmission electron microscopy. Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin b (STb) causes severe diarrhoea in weaning piglets. STb most probably has to bind to intestinal epithelial cells in order to achieve its effect.
