Evaluation of photobioreactor designs for potential application as microalgal façade systems.

This study introduces innovative PBRs to optimize the growth of Chlorella vulgaris. For the first time, various designs, including flat and column PBRs with and without innovative interior structures, were investigated in the context of a Green Campus case study. The novel column PBR equipped with a spiral baffle significantly improved the homogeneity of the culture medium, enhancing light penetration, nutrient distribution, and gas exchange, while effectively reducing air bubble coalescence using an innovative spiral apparatus, achieving a biomass yield of 1.8 g L- 1 with a climate change imp

A novel arrayed tangential-circular jet swirling plate photobioreactor for enhancing the flashing light effect to promote microalgal growth and CO2 fixation.

A novel arrayed tangential-circular jet swirling plate photobioreactor (ATCJSP) was developed to promote microalgal growth and carbon fixation by enhancing the flashing light effect, improving mass transfer and mixing, and reducing bubble diameter. In this system, the microalgae solution was injected through four symmetrically arranged nozzle sets with four nozzles in each set to create vortices parallel to the light path. These vortex arrays collectively drove an efficient spiral flow, which accelerated the light-dark cycle of the microalgae cells and strengthened gas-liquid mass transfer. Un

A 5.9 GHz Sezawa SAW Acoustic Delay Line Based on Al0.6Sc0.4N-on-Sapphire With Propagation Q-Factor of 3044.

In this work, we demonstrate a highperformance surface acoustic wave (SAW) delay line based on a scandium alloyed aluminum nitride (AlScN)- on-sapphire platform operating at 5.9 GHz with an exceptionally high acoustic propagation Q-factor. An 800 nm AlScN thin film with 40% scandium alloying concentration was deposited on a thick sapphire substrate to achieve strong acoustic energy confinement and large electromechanical coupling, thereby minimizing the insertion loss (IL) and propagation loss (PL) of the acoustic delay line (ADL). The proposed ADL was designed to operate in the Sezawa mode us

A Multimodal Haptic Feedback Interface with Thin-Film Compliant Mechanism.

Multimodal cutaneous haptic interfaces can deliver multiple forms of mechanical stimulation and trigger different mechanoreceptors, enabling richer haptic information and realistic tactile sensations. Such interfaces have broad potential in healthcare, entertainment, and education. Electromagnetic (EM) actuators are particularly attractive for multimodal haptic systems due to their compact size, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. However, existing EM-based multimodal haptic devices struggle to simultaneously achieve large displacement, high output force, and effective constraint

Comparative evaluation of robotic surgical systems in oculoplastic surgery: A study of Da Vinci versus medtronic hugo RAS in standardized eyelid incisions.

BACKGROUND: Theoretically, robotic surgical platforms offer advantages in precision, tremor elimination, and certain degree of visualization for periocular surgeries. However, there are no published studies where a direct comparative assessment of two independent robotic systems has been performed for the creation of common eyelid incisions. We report, to our knowledge, the first head-to-head comparison of the Medtronic Hugo RAS® and Intuitive da Vinci® surgical systems for this purpose. METHODS: Six standard periocular incisions were first decided and then performed using both platforms on f

[Design and application of a heartbeat restorer for critical care medicine].

Cardiac arrest is a prevalent clinical emergency characterized by its high incidence, sudden onset, challenges in resuscitation, and low success rates. Timely and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the key to improving the success rate of patient rescue. Currently, manual CPR serves as the primary clinical approach. Due to the high intensity of physical exertion, the depth and frequency of external chest compression decrease with the extension of CPR time, resulting in a lower success rate of CPR. Although existing mechanical resuscitation devices address issues such as compressi

Noninvasive detection and prediction method for temperature in ex vivo biological tissue based on opto-thermal-acoustic co-coupling.

SIGNIFICANCE: Photothermal therapy is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes near-infrared light to induce localized hyperthermia for the selective ablation of cancer cells. Its therapeutic efficacy is highly dependent on precise temperature regulation. Aiming at the problems of invasiveness, insufficient penetration depth existing in current temperature monitoring technologies, we propose an innovative solution. AIM: We propose a method that can be used to monitor the temperature inside ex vivo biological tissues during laser heating. APPROACH: By constructing an optothermal-acoustic

Preventing Retained Surgical Items Through the Development of a Safer Telescopic Sponge-Counting System.

A retained surgical item (RSI) remains a serious patient safety risk in perioperative nursing, with surgical sponges representing the most common RSI. After an RSI event involving a sponge occurred at a large academic medical center, a root cause analysis identified the stacking of sponge bags as a contributing factor. The nurse innovator was tasked with finding a solution. A telescopic sponge-counting system (SCS) prototype, featuring expandable arms, allowed visualization of 120 sponges without stacking bags. A three-phase evaluation was conducted: a staff assessment of the standard SCS curr

Standard Plate Design for Segmented Mandibular Osteotomy With Genioplasty.

Mandibular symphysis segmentation for the correction of transverse deformities has been recently described in the literature, highlighting its potential in the management of dentofacial deformities. However, the use of osteosynthesis systems in this context has not yet been fully standardized, mainly due to the difficulty of obtaining standard plates with specific designs for these procedures. The aim of this report is to present a solution to this limitation using a standard plate that provides adequate spacing and 3-dimensional stability. This approach optimizes the osteosynthesis stage, red

Retrosternal extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillators: a systematic review of implant characteristics, defibrillation testing, and acute safety.

INTRODUCTION: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) terminate potentially deadly ventricular arrhythmias in at-risk patients. Retrosternal extravascular ICDs (EV-ICD) place a lead in the mediastinal space to provide both shock and antitachycardia pacing therapy without the need for venous access. A systematic review was performed to assess acute outcomes in patients implanted with a retrosternal EV-ICD. METHODS: A query of EMBASE and MEDLINE databases was performed to identify unique retrosternal EV-ICD cohort studies published between JAN-1-2020 and JAN-31-2026. Two known retrosterna

Biomechanical validation of the field-expedient pelvic splint.

INTRODUCTION: Morbidity and mortality from pelvic ring injuries can be mitigated by early and effective external pelvic stabilisation. The field-expedient pelvic splint (FEPS) is a recently described technique to improvise an effective pelvic binder for an austere environment. This technique has not been biomechanically validated. We hypothesise that the FEPS will be biomechanically equivalent to a commercially available pelvic binder routinely used in the austere environment. METHODS: Compressive force generation of the FEPS was measured using a commercial load frame. A SAM Pelvic Sling was
