Temperature exposure and fatal overdose.

AIMS: Climate change poses many threats, such as increased risks of hot or cold weather events to the health and well-being of Americans. Previous studies examined relationships between temperature exposure and physical or mental health. This study examined whether temperature exposure was associated with increased drug overdoses. METHODS: We examined whether temperature exposure was associated with fatal overdoses using state-by-year and county-by-month fixed effect linear regressions. Using the 1999-2021 Multiple Causes of Deaths, we constructed the outcome variable as fatal overdose per 10

Chronic cannabidiol treatment effects on contextual fear and neuropathic pain in Carioca rats high and low conditioned freezing.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and chronic pain often co-occur, and cannabidiol (CBD) has a promising treatment for both conditions. In this study, we evaluated whether chronic systemic treatment with CBD decreases pain sensitivity and anxiety-like behavior in a validated animal model of GAD - the Carioca rat lineages, selectively bred based on extreme responses to contextual fear conditioning: high freezing (CHF), low freezing (CLF), and a non-selected control group (CTL). Male rats from each lineage (n = 32 per group) were submitted to a chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve (

Regulation of globin expression in Antarctic fish under thermal and hypoxic stress.

In the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean, Antarctic teleost fish, the Notothenioidei, have developed unique adaptations to cope with cold, including, at the extreme, the loss of hemoglobin in icefish. As a consequence, icefish are thought to be the most vulnerable of the Antarctic fish species to ongoing ocean warming. Some icefish also fail to express myoglobin but all appear to retain neuroglobin, cytoglobin-1, cytoglobin-2, and globin-X. Despite the lack of the inducible heat shock response, Antarctic notothenioid fish are endowed with physiological plasticity to partially compensate fo

High particulate matter 2.5 levels and ambient temperature are associated with acute lung edema in patients with nondialysis Stage 5 chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown that exposure to air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM) with a diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5), was associated with various diseases. We tried to determine the impact of PM2.5 and other weather factors on acute lung edema in patients with Stage 5 nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD Stage 5-ND). METHODS: In total, 317 CKD Stage 5-ND (estimated glomerular filtration rate 6.79 ± 4.56 mL/min) patients residing in central Taiwan who developed acute lung edema and initiated long-term dialysis were included in this case-crossover study. Pearson's corre

Climatic adaptation in human inferior nasal turbinate morphology: Evidence from Arctic and equatorial populations.

OBJECTIVES: The nasal turbinates directly influence the overall size, shape, and surface area of the nasal passages, and thus contribute to intranasal heat and moisture exchange. However, unlike the encapsulating walls of the nasal cavity, ecogeographic variation in nasal turbinate morphology among humans has not yet been established. Here we investigate variation in inferior nasal turbinate morphology in two populations from climatically extreme environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three linear measurements of the inferior turbinate, nasal cavity walls, and airway passages were collec

Endoscopic cryotherapy: experimental results and first clinical use.

BACKGROUND: Cryotherapy or the application of extreme cold has many potential applications in gastroenterology including tissue destruction and hemostasis but until now its development has been prevented by the lack of a delivery device suitable for use through the endoscope. We report here our experience with prototype devices using both liquid nitrogen driven by a cryosurgical system and cryogenic refrigerants (nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide) at or near ambient temperature. METHODS: Cryotherapy was applied to the distal esophageal mucosa of dogs via a flexible catheter passed through an u…

Clinical and Psychosocial Predisposing Factors Associated With Anaesthesia Failure During Non-Surgical Root Canal Treatment: A National Dental Practice-Based Research Network Study.

AIM: This study aimed to identify dentist, patient, and pre-treatment clinical characteristics associated with local anaesthesia failure during non-surgical endodontic treatment. METHODOLOGY: Data were collected from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network study entitled "Predicting Outcomes of Root Canal Treatment (PREDICT)", which included 1723 patients. Local anaesthesia failure during treatment was defined as patient-reported pain of 3 or greater on a 0-to-10-point scale. Pre-treatment factors included patient demographics, psychosocial constructs, and pre-treatment clinical f

Housing conditions and limitations in physical function among older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Housing conditions are an important social determinant of health. However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous study has systematically assessed the association between housing conditions and physical function limitations in older adults; moreover, whether this association is independent of the socioeconomic status achieved earlier in life is still uncertain. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis conducted among 2012 non-institutionalised individuals aged ≥60 years, who participated in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort. Participants reported the following poor housing conditions: livi

Study on Potential Clostridium Botulinum Growth and Toxin Production in Parma Ham.

The objective of this study was to investigate Clostridium botulinum growth and toxin production in the industrially manufactured Italian Parma ham. The study focuses on the Parma ham production phase identified as maximum risk to C. botulinum proliferation, i.e. the transition from cold phase (salting and resting) to a phase carried out at temperature between 15 and 23°C (drying). A preliminary in vitro test was carried out in order to verify the capability of 6 C. botulinum strains (1 type A, 4 type B, and 1 type E strains) to grow in conditions of temperature, pH and NaCl concentration comp

The primary vascular dysregulation syndrome: implications for eye diseases.

Vascular dysregulation refers to the regulation of blood flow that is not adapted to the needs of the respective tissue. We distinguish primary vascular dysregulation (PVD, formerly called vasospastic syndrome) and secondary vascular dysregulation (SVD). Subjects with PVD tend to have cold extremities, low blood pressure, reduced feeling of thirst, altered drug sensitivity, increased pain sensitivity, prolonged sleep onset time, altered gene expression in the lymphocytes, signs of oxidative stress, slightly increased endothelin-1 plasma level, low body mass index and often diffuse and fluctuat

Frostbite of the upper extremity.

Human capacity for physiologic adaptation to cold is minimal; we survive by insulating ourselves with protective clothing. In addition to the irreversible direct injury caused by ice crystallization, the authors have outlined four possible mechanisms by which indirect injury may damage tissue. Other than rapid rewarming, there is no uniformly accepted protocol for the treatment of frostbite injury. Attempting to sort out the world's literature on frostbite in an effort to present a comprehensive treatment protocol is a daunting task. In addition to the probably irreversible direct injury cause

Wearable-derived heart rate variability responses to a mind-body exercise intervention in older people from high southern latitudes (Chilean Patagonia, ~53°S).

BACKGROUND: High southern latitudes expose older adults to chronic cold and marked seasonal light variability, potentially challenging physiological resilience. Yet, few interventions have examined stress-related autonomic regulation in these geographically extreme contexts, and wearable-derived heart rate variability (HRV) frameworks remain insufficiently tested. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a wearable-derived HRV framework, including signal quality control and Bayesian multivariate modeling, to characterize resting and exercise-evoked autonomic responses before and after a low-dose mind-body exer

High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema in Ohio at an Elevation of 339 Meters.

BACKGROUND: HAPE (High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema) is a life-threatening form of high-altitude illness caused by noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. It has been most commonly reported in individuals who live at lower elevations and travel to elevations above 2500 m, typically in those who do so without any acclimatization. It can also occur in residents of high altitudes who descend to lower altitudes and then return to their native altitude without acclimatization. HAPE is more common in individuals with a history of prior HAPE, very rapid rates of ascent, upper respiratory illness, extreme exertio

A case of cocaine-induced panhypopituitarism with human neutrophil elastase-specific anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with cocaine-induced panhypopituitarism associated with human neutrophil elastase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (HNE-ANCA). CASE: A 41-year-old man presented with extreme fatigue, cold intolerance and anorexia with 20 kg weight loss in the last 6 months. His medical history was unremarkable. He snorted cocaine twice a week during the last 6 years. On examination, we saw a pale and skinny man, with a normal blood pressure. Because of the severity of symptoms central hypothyroidism was suspected and very low values of TSH, free thyroxine and free triiod

Chronic Urticaria-Associated Syndromes: Is Andersen-Tawil Syndrome One of Them?

The spectrum of syndromes associated with chronic urticaria (CU) is broad, ranging from monogenic autoinflammatory diseases (a single gene defect drives disease through dysregulated innate immunity) to multifactorial and acquired conditions (urticaria arises as part of a broader, polygenic or immune-mediated systemic process). Monogenic autoinflammatory conditions presenting with urticaria include cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS)-encompassing familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome (FCAS), Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS), and neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease (NOMID/CIN

Conservation and divergence of abiotic stress-responsive gene co-expression networks in diploid and tetraploid cotton.

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is highly susceptible to abiotic stresses, including temperature extremes, drought, and salinity. The diploid species Gossypium arboreum retains stress adaptive traits that are poorly represented in modern tetraploid cultivars, yet the evolutionary and regulatory bases of these ploidy associated differences remain insufficiently understood. Here, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis of 54 seedling leaf RNA-seq libraries from Gossypium arboreum, Gossypium hirsutum, and Gossypium barbadense subjected to four abiotic stress treatments. By integrating standard

Non-Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease in Women.

Takayasu arteritis, fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), spontaneous arterial dissection, Raynaud's phenomenon, and chilblains are vascular conditions that are associated with an increased predisposition in women and are often underdiagnosed. Takayasu arteritis has an incidence rate of 2.6 cases per million individuals per year in the USA and predominantly affects women of childbearing age. HLA-B5 genetic locus is linked with Takayasu arteritis susceptibility. Methods to determine active disease are limiting; currently utilized clinical and imaging findings and laboratory tests are of limited value

Wear patterns on retrieved polyethylene tibial inserts and their relationship to technical considerations during total knee arthroplasty.

Fifty-five unconstrained polyethylene tibial inserts were retrieved at revision total knee arthroplasty and examined for evidence of wear after a mean implantation time of 34.2 months (2.5-80 months). Twenty inserts were ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and 35 were carbon-reinforced polyethylene. Topographic maps of the articular and metal-backed surfaces of each component were constructed to characterize the extent and location of polyethylene degradation, identified visually by mode. In 32 of the retrieved inserts, pre- and postarthroplasty or prerevision radiographs were an

Renal autotransplantation and ex vivo renal surgery: surgical treatment of renovascular hypertension.

Autotransplantation of the kidney has proved to be an extremely valuable surgical alternative for the treatment of renovascular hypertension. The modern operation is founded in landmark surgical experiments performed during the early years of this century. Despite the relative technical simplicity and considerable potential application of renal autotransplantation, the operation was not employed for at least a decade following the more uncertain initial clinical adventures in renal allotransplantation. Since its inception, however, the successful use of renal autotransplantation for renovascul
