A fibrinous exudate developed in 8 children after cataract extraction. Blunt trauma was the cause of cataract formation in 6 children; the other 2 presented with congenital cataract. In 4 of 6 children with traumatic cataract, iris damage was evident. Seven children had an intraocular lens implanted. Normal and pathological conditions of the fetal gallbladder have been a subject of recent investigation by ultrasonographers. Fetal gallstones are the most common abnormal finding and appear as echogenic foci within the gallbladder. We report a series of five fetuses in whom the gallbladders were filled with sludge which appeared as a pear shape echogenic structure. In the majority of cases, gallbladder sludge mimicked intrahepatic calcification or echogenic bowel. Serial ultrasound examinations of these fetuses revealed good interval growth. Optimal treatment of extensive donor sites in patients with major burn injuries can be frustrating for both physician and nursing staffs and can cause great discomfort for the patients. Slow healing or infections of donor site wounds may impede other aspects of burn care and delay further skin grafting. The presence of the platelet-activating factor (PAF) in peritoneal exudate, induced by zymosan, was investigated in rats. Intraperitoneal injection of zymosan induced an extravasation of plasma proteins and an accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the peritoneal cavity. Zymosan induced a release of immunoreactive PAF in peritoneal exudate which reached maximum levels at 30 min and then declined slowly. Percutaneous aspiration or drainage was the initial treatment of 104 fluid collections in 92 patients. Our success rate was 91%, with a 7% recurrence, 3% complication rate, and 4% mortality rate. Percutaneous drainage (PD) was beneficial in all but two patients, and open surgical drainage was avoided in 84 patients. To assess the usefulness of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) estimation in nipple discharge for the detection of nonpalpable breast cancer, CEA activity in nipple discharge was measured by enzyme immunoassay using monoclonal antibody. We made small nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachments (blebs) in rabbits over regions of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) that were damaged mechanically or by laser photocoagulation. Fluorescein diffused readily into blebs made over damaged RPE, but the subretinal fluid was resorbed more quickly than from blebs overlying normal RPE.
