A successfully rehabilitated anophthalmic socket must hold and support a prosthetic device that mimics the contralateral globe. The goal is symmetry. Static symmetry of the palpebral apertures, canthal angles, and superior sulci are basic objectives. Full versions of the socket implant and prosthesis and full upper lid excursion are definitely desirable but difficult to attain. Adequate lid levels and contours and sufficiently deep conjunctival fornices are necessary to keep the prosthesis in place. Anophthalmic socket cysts are challenging to remove and incomplete excision has been shown to increase the risk of recurrence. This case series describes a novel technique utilising the fibrin sealant Tisseel (Baxter AG, Vienna, Austria) to retain the socket cyst integrity during surgical removal to facilitate its complete excision. Five patients were included and followed up for a minimum of 1 year, and there were no signs of recurrence in any of the cases. The surgical technique is described and illustrated. This technique is a safe way of simplifying challenging socket cyst surgery.

Secondary complications in an anophthalmic socket can include late appearing shrinkage due to scarring and squamous cell carcinoma. This article reports a 51-year-old man who 27 years after an enucleation developed an inability to retain his ocular prosthesis due to an acquired multilobular fleshy mass in his inferior fornix. The patient had worn his prosthesis without removal for years at a time. Microscopic evaluation of the excised lesion disclosed a pseudoadenomatous (pseudoglandular) hyperplasia of the conjunctival epithelium with myriad goblet cells and accompanying chronic inflammation.

Morphology of rabbit eyes enucleated in various periods after ultrasound exposure was studied to elucidate the hypotensive effect of focussed ultrasound. Histologic findings suggest two mechanisms of focussed ultrasound effect: inhibited secretion of intraocular fluid at the expense of focal necrosis of ciliary body epithelium and creation of transscleral route of chamber fluid discharge as a result of sclera thinning at the site of intervention.

PURPOSE: The aim of the research is the assessment of results of enucleation with orbital implant in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Examinations included the group of 99 children between 6 months and 19 years of age.
