[Clinico-pathological analysis of 45 parotid gland cysts].

PURPOSE: To discuss the clinical and pathological characteristics and management of parotid gland cyst. METHODS: Forty-five resected samples of parotid gland tumors were selected from Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from January 2000 to June 2014 whose postoperative pathological diagnosis were parotid gland cysts. The clinico-pathological characteristics in different types of parotid gland cysts were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 45 cases of parotid gland cyst, 25 were males, 20 were females. The median age was 51 years old. 21 cases were located on the left side of parotid gland, whi

[Sequelae of haemangiomas: surgical treatment].

The cure without after-effect of an hemangioma is classic but sometimes the spontaneous involution, a premature surgical treatment or an evolutionary complication can be at the origin of a definitive after-effect. In these cases, the treatment of the hemangioma, often multidisciplinary, will be begun in a late way during the late childhood or the adolescence. Surgical excision of an excess tissue or of a wide scar, lipoaspiration of a fat remainder, lasertherapy and fat tissue reinjection are simple and mostly sufficient procedures. In the most complex cases, notably at the facial site, a surg

[Biopercular lesion with inverse dissociation].

Foix-Chavany-Marie Syndrome or anterior opercular syndrome constitutes the cortical form of pseudobulbar palsy. Its most common etiology is stroke in the region of either operculum. Clinically it can be characterized by severe dysarthria and facio-pharyngo-glosso-masticatory dysplasia with automatic-voluntary dissociation. An inversion of this classical dissociation can be seen in patients with emotional paralysis in the face, in whom asymmetry of emotional expression but conservation of voluntary movement can be seen. The lesional topography of this inverse dissociation corresponds to the sup

Perineural spread of squamous cell carcinoma involving trigeminal and facial nerves.

Perineural spread of squamous cell carcinomas in the orofacial region predominantly involves the trigeminal and facial nerves. Central spread, particularly along the trigeminal nerve, produces sensory impairment and involvement of other divisions through invasion of the gasserian ganglion, as illustrated in these case reports. Early diagnosis and medical referral is important because central invasion has a poor prognosis.

Facial nerve tumours or 'all that palsies is not Bell's'.

Most cases of facial nerve palsy are idiopathic, that is to say, Bell's palsy. A few cases are due to tumours on the facial nerve. Early diagnosis will avoid extensive tissue destruction with loss of hearing and lead to satisfactory facial reinnervation. Five cases are presented. In three, there was a significant delay in diagnosis. A facial nerve tumour generally presents as a paralysis of slow onset and the degree of paralysis often fluctuates. Diagnosis can be made in most cases by high resolution CT.

Primary Extranodal Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in the Infra-Orbital Region – A Diagnostic Challenge.

Lymphomas within the head and neck region (HNR) are relatively uncommon; however, they can mimic common odontogenic conditions leading to diagnostic delays and subsequently the implementation of treatment. We report a case of a chronic infra-orbital swelling which, following excision, was diagnosed as an extranodal low grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This paper explains the mode of presentation of extranodal lymphomas in the HNR, so that dental practitioners may consider it as a potential diagnosis when presented with a lump in the HNR. Clinical relevance: Extranodal lymphomas presenting within th

Parotid lymphangioma associated with facial nerve paralysis.

Parotid lymphangioma is a relatively rare disease that is usually detected in infancy or early childhood, and which has typical features. Clinical reports of facial nerve paralysis caused by lymphangioma, however, are very rare. Usually, facial nerve paralysis in a child suggests malignancy. Here we report a very rare case of parotid lymphangioma associated with facial nerve paralysis. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to hospital with a rapidly enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Left peripheral-type facial nerve paralysis was also noted. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

Submental dermoid cyst: a rare clinical entity in early pediatric age.

Herein we describe a rare case of exclusive submental dermoid cyst in the first decade of life. The preoperative ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnosis was confirmed by the results of a histopathological examination. US followed by MRI is the gold standard for the non-invasive diagnostic differentiation of dermoid cysts from other submental swellings and submental excision remains the best surgical option.

Osteochondroma of the coronoid process.

The osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor that occasionally appears in the oral cavity. An osteochondroma of the coronoid process can cause limited mouth opening, and as it grows, facial deformity. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice; recurrence has not been reported. Occurrence and treatment is described for a 26-year-old woman.

Resolution of prepubertal male gynecomastia following removal of a giant pigmented nevus.

A male infant is reported in whom substantial gynecomastia resolved following removal of a giant pigmented nevus. Endocrinological studies were normal. It is postulated that the nevus contributed to the development of gynecomastia. Surgeons should be aware of a possible relationship between these two seemingly unrelated conditions when making evaluation and management decisions.
