Noninvasive light emitting diode therapy: A novel approach for postinfarction ventricular arrhythmias and neuroimmune modulation.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic neural activation plays a key role in the incidence and maintenance of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) induced ventricular arrhythmia (VA). Furthermore, previous studies showed that AMI might induce microglia and sympathetic activation and that microglial activation might contribute to sympathetic activation. Recently, studies showed that light emitting diode (LED) therapy might attenuate microglial activation. Therefore, we hypothesized that LED therapy might reduce AMI-induced VA by attenuating microglia and sympathetic activation. METHODS: Thirty anesthetized rats

Contralateral Effects of Eccentric Exercise and DOMS of the Plantar Flexors: Evidence of Central Involvement.

Purpose: Peripheral and central factors play important roles in the reduction of motor performance following damaging eccentric exercise and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Following this regime, contralateral limbs could also be affected; however, the factors involved remain inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to distinguish the peripheral and central factors following eccentric contraction and DOMS of the plantar flexors in treated and contralateral homologous limbs. Methods: Ten males (BMI = 25.08 ± 1.69kgm-2; age = 28.70 ± 4.24 years) were randomly assigned to experimental (D

Surgical management of neuroma pain: a prospective follow-up study.

Painful neuromas can cause severe loss of function and have great impact on the daily life of patients. Surgical management remains challenging; despite improving techniques, success rates are low. To accurately study the success of surgical neuroma treatment and factors predictive of outcome, a prospective follow-up study was performed. Between 2006 and 2009, pre- and post-operative questionnaires regarding pain (VAS, McGill), function (DASH), quality of life (SF-36), symptoms of psychopathology (SCL-90), epidemiologic determinants and other outcome factors were sent to patients surgically tr

Significant increase in the prevalence of non-rheumatic aortic valve disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk for coronary artery disease and hyperlipidemia. The role of Diabetes as an independent risk factor for aortic stenosis or regurgitation has been controversial. The goal of this study was to evaluate any association between DM and non-rheumatic aortic valve disease using a very large database. METHOD: We used PTF documents containing discharge diagnosis using ICD-9 codes of inpatient treatment from all Veterans Health Administration Hospitals (VA). The data were stratified using ICD-9 code for DM (n=293,124), a control group with hypertension

Systemic inflammatory profiles and their relationships with demographic, behavioural and clinical features in acute low back pain.

Systemic inflammation is linked with development and persistence of many pathological pain states. Although chronic phase inflammatory responses are well reported, the acute phase has received limited attention. Here we investigated circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP), and explored their relationships with symptom severity and other factors in acute low back pain (LBP). Ninety-nine individuals within two weeks of onset of acute LBP and 55 pain-free controls completed questionnaires related to their pain (visual analogue scale, VAS) and disability, behaviour, sle

Inherited resistance to activated protein C caused by presence of the FV:Q506 allele as a basis of venous thrombosis.

Inherited resistance to activated protein C (APC) was recently discovered as a cause of familial thrombophilia and is now known to be the most common genetic risk factor for venous thrombosis. In a majority of cases, APC resistance is associated with a single point mutation in the factor V gene, which results in substitution of arginine (R) at position 506 by glutamine (Q) (FV:Q506). The mutation renders factor Va partially resistant to degradation by activated protein C (APC), which leads to a hypercoagulable state and a life-long 5-10-fold increased risk of venous thrombosis. The previously …
