The effects of feeding frequency on jaw loading in two lemur species.

OBJECTIVES: Studies on oral processing are often snapshots of behaviors that examine feeding through individual bouts. In this study, we exp … mbers. The lemur species did not differ in our models. DISCUSSION: Maximum food toughness impacted feeding behaviors and intake, which is consistent with higher loads having a greater effect on morphology. In contrast to feeding per bout, cumulative biting and chewing did not differ between species; taking feeding frequency into consideration affects interpretati …

Effects of the provision of solid feeds enriched with protein or nonprotein nitrogen on veal calf growth, welfare, and slaughter performance.

The study compared the effects of enriching a basic solid feed mixture made of corn grain and straw with a protein source (extruded pea) or with urea on growth, health, behavior, and carcass quality of veal calves. Seventy-nine calves, divided according to their initial body weight (59.8 ± 6.9 kg) into 3 groups (5 pens of 5 or 6 animals per group), were allotted to 1 of 3 experimental feeding treatments: milk replacer plus an 85:15 (as-fed basis) mixture of corn grain and wheat straw (CGS); milk replacer plus a 72:15:13 mixture of corn grain, wheat straw, and extruded pea (CGS-EP); or milk rep

Model evaluation for automated scoring of electropenetrography waveform data from mosquitoes.

Electropenetrography (EPG) is a powerful tool for quantifying how arthropods interact with their hosts, but manually labeling EPG feeding behavior waveforms is subjective, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. Machine-learning models for supervised classification have achieved widespread success in pattern recognition in scientific contexts and have the potential to automate and standardize waveform labeling. Here, the performance of various common machine learning methods for EPG waveform labeling was compared using a representative dataset of Culex tarsalis EPG waveforms; the top five models …

Meal-feeding promotes skeletal growth by ghrelin-dependent enhancement of growth hormone rhythmicity.

The physiological effect of ultradian temporal feeding patterns remains a major unanswered question in nutritional science. We have used automated and nasogastric feeding to address this question in male rodents and human volunteers. While grazing and meal-feeding reduced food intake in parallel (compared with ad libitum-fed rodents), body length and tibial epiphysial plate width were maintained in meal-fed rodents via the action of ghrelin and its receptor, GHS-R. Grazing and meal-feeding initially suppressed elevated preprandial ghrelin levels in rats, followed by either a sustained elevatio

Acute feeding suppression and toxicity of raspberry ketone [4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone] in mice.

Raspberry ketone (RK; [4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone]) is used by the food and cosmetic industry as a flavoring agent. RK is also marketed as a dietary supplement for weight maintenance and appetite control. The purpose of the study was to characterize the acute feeding suppression with RK (64-640 mg/kg) by oral gavage in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Cumulative 24 h food intake was reduced at 200 mg/kg (24% feeding suppression) in males and reliably reduced at 640 mg/kg (49-77% feeding suppression). Feeding suppression was not associated with pica behavior over the range of doses or conditi

The effect of pair housing on dairy calf health, performance, and behavior.

Individual housing of dairy calves prevails in Europe and North America despite its negative effects on calf development. One of the main reasons is that farmers find individual housing of calves more practical than group housing. A compromise between practice and welfare could be housing calves in pairs. Therefore, we aimed to compare health, feed intake, growth, and behavior in a novel arena of 22 individually (INDI) and 44 pair-housed calves that were randomly assigned a treatment. Diarrhea and respiratory problems were recorded every day for the period of 49 d. Intake of calf starter and m

Integrating Mindful Feeding Into Responsive Feeding Guidance.

Responsive feeding is widely recognized as a best practice in infant and young child feeding, yet the gap between its recommendation and its consistent implementation among caregivers remains a persistent challenge. Mindful feeding, which is defined as present-centered mental and emotional awareness in the feeding context, has emerged as a related but distinct construct that may help explain this gap. While research on mindful feeding is still developing, early evidence suggests it is associated with similar positive outcomes for child nutrition and development as responsive feeding, including

Determinism and contingency in the evolution of giant filter-feeding vertebrates.

Giant suspension feeders have evolved repeatedly across vertebrates, but the relative roles of deterministic factors and phylogenetic contingency remain unclear. To test this, we integrate new selachian data with published pachycormiform and cetacean datasets to reconstruct phylomorphospaces from standardized cranial, dental, and jaw metrics (gape, orbit size, mechanical advantage, mandibular aspect ratio), evaluate convergence using quantitative metrics, and fit alternative multivariate evolutionary models. Independent lineages evolve from distinct macrophagous ancestors but follow roughly pa

Effects of mindfulness and mindful eating on food intake and appetite: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mindfulness, mindful eating and intuitive eating practices are associated with healthier eating and lower body weight. However, experimental research in this area has shown mixed effects on food intake and theoretical accounts are underdeveloped. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of mindfulness, mindful eating and intuitive eating interventions on food intake and appetite (hunger and fullness) in adults and children and compare effects across different subgroups to investigate potential mechanisms of action. Five electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBAS

Associations of waterbirds with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields: increasing foraging opportunities or just gathering for the feast?

Surges in food availability create localized intense foraging opportunities, often attracting multi-species consumer groups. Agricultural practices can trigger these surges, prompting bird associations. However, the strength and duration of associations and its drivers, remain unclear. This study examines waterbird association with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields. The duration and magnitude of these associations were determined and three hypotheses addressed to explain them: (1) increased food availability, (2) enhanced foraging success and (3) reduced time allocated to vigilanc

Nonlinear vocal phenomena in African penguin begging calls: occurrence, significance and potential applications.

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) extensively use high-frequency food solicitation signals (begging calls) to request food from parents. We studied the occurrence of nonlinear vocal phenomena (NLP) in begging calls in 91 hand-reared penguin chicks at the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. For each chick, we recorded the begging calls daily, from the hatching of wild abandoned eggs to the release of the chicks into the wild approximately three months later. We found that most (70%) of begging calls contain NLP. The most frequently observed are sidebands (54.

Generation of Virus-Infected Ticks: Synchronous Infection and Feeding on Viremic Animals.

Although many hematophagous arthropods transmit pathogens to humans and animals, Ixodid ticks are unique in that the feeding process lasts for days to weeks instead of a few minutes. To facilitate feeding, tick saliva suppresses host responses, which would permit detection and removal and has been shown to impact disease transmission and severity. Using infected ticks to transmit the virus to a host, the resulting disease course and pathology should resemble naturally occurring cases more closely than simply injecting the virus through a needle. In this work, we describe methods to generate vi

Novel program for automatic calculation of EPG variables.

The electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique is the most powerful tool for studying the feeding behavior of pierce-sucking insects. However, calculating EPG variables is often very time-consuming, and consequently, several software programs have been developed for the automatic calculation of EPG variables. Here we present a new user-friendly Excel Workbook that uses a standardized list of EPG variables and follows expert guidelines for calculating them. The program developed in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is a step up from the existing software and allows easy data analysis and in…

Evaluating the effects of roads on giant panda habitat at two scales in a typical nature reserve.

Little is known about how roads affect the habitats of giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), this study aimed to provide a scientific basis to better understand this question, and to formulate targeted measures to reduce the adverse effects of roads. To evaluate the effects of roads on giant panda habitat, a field survey was carried out in the Wanglang Nature Reserve at two scales, 400 m2 and 100 m2, in July and August of every year from 2015 to 2019. We compared the community characteristics of roadside habitats, giant panda habitats and the local environment by using difference tests and mu

Sonar sound groups and increased terminal buzz duration reflect task complexity in hunting bats.

More difficult tasks are generally regarded as such because they demand greater attention. Echolocators provide rare insight into this relationship because biosonar signals can be monitored. Here we show that bats produce longer terminal buzzes and more sonar sound groups during their approach to prey under presumably more difficult conditions. Specifically, we found Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii, produced longer buzzes when aerial-hawking versus water-trawling prey, but that bats taking revolving air- and water-borne prey produced more sonar sound groups than did the bats when taking s

Absence of food alternatives promotes risk-prone feeding of unpalatable substances in honey bees.

The question of why animals sometimes ingest noxious substances is crucial to understand unknown determinants of feeding behaviour. Research on risk-prone feeding behaviour has largely focused on energy budgets as animals with low energy budgets tend to ingest more aversive substances. A less explored possibility is that risk-prone feeding arises from the absence of alternative feeding options, irrespectively of energy budgets. Here we contrasted these two hypotheses in late-fall and winter honey bees. We determined the toxicity of various feeding treatments and showed that when bees can choos

Japanese beetles facilitate feeding by green june beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) on ripening grapes.

Adult activity of native green June beetles, Cotinis nitida L., and invasive Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman, peaked in late July in Kentucky coincident with later stages of veraison in early- and midseason ripening grape (Vitis spp.) cultivars. Most C. nitida feeding aggregations sampled on clusters of early-ripening grapes in the research vineyard also contained Japanese beetles. Assays showed C. nitida generally are unable to bite into intact ripe grape berries, whereas Japanese beetles readily do so. The beetles' disparate biting ability is likely because of differences in their
