Effects of Microcurrent on Oxygen Saturation by Controlling Rectus Abdominis Activity in Preterm Infant With Desaturation During Feeding: A Pilot Study.

Objective: To determine whether a portable microcurrent therapy device (PMTD) of the rectus abdominis muscles is effective for treating desaturation during feeding in preterm infants and to evaluate the association between initial electrical activity of respiratory muscle and long-term development delay. Methods: Twenty preterm infants with desaturation during feeding were recruited. Respiratory muscle activity was quantified by calculating the root mean square (RMS) of the electromyography. All preterm infants received a 30 min PMTD application to the rectus abdominis and diaphragm daily for

Relationship of transcranial Doppler flow velocities and arteriovenous malformation feeding artery pressures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Feeding mean arterial pressure immediately proximal to the nidus of arteriovenous malformations may influence the frequency of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. This study assessed the usefulness of transcranial Doppler ultrasound velocities as a noninvasive estimate of feeding mean arterial pressure. METHODS: We studied 41 patients undergoing 73 staged treatments of arteriovenous malformations with endovascular embolization, surgery, or both. Before treatment during the awake state, transcranial Doppler mean and peak velocities were recorded in proximal Willisian

Intermittent vs. continuous: a comparative narrative review of enteral and parenteral nutrition support strategies in the perioperative setting.

Enteral and parenteral nutrition are two primary methods of nutritional support in clinical settings. Their administration modes-continuous or intermittent-have garnered increasing attention in recent research. Continuous enteral and parenteral nutrition provide steady metabolic support over extended periods, particularly beneficial for critically ill patients or those with high nutritional demands. Conversely, intermittent feeding, delivered at scheduled intervals, simulates natural eating patterns and may offer advantages in gastrointestinal function and metabolic regulation. Recent studies

Child food neophobia is heritable, associated with less compliant eating, and moderates familial resemblance for BMI.

OBJECTIVE: The heritability of food neophobia, the tendency to avoid new foods, was tested in 4-7-year-old twins. We also examined whether food neophobia is associated with parent-child feeding relations or child body fat. DESIGN AND METHODS: 66 same-sex twin pairs, including 37 monozygotic (MZ) and 29 dizygotic (DZ) pairs were studied. Food neophobia was assessed by parent questionnaire (Child Food Neophobia Scale, CFNS), as were child-feeding practices and "division of responsibility" feeding relations. Child anthropometry and percent body fat were directly measured. RESULTS: MZ and DZ twi

An evaluation of factors influencing feeding in babies with a cleft palate with and without a cleft lip.

The objective of this article was to determine the impact of different bottles and teats for feeding babies with a cleft palate (with and without a cleft lip) on weight velocity, feeding behaviour, and maternal self-esteem. A mixed methods study incorporating the use of diaries to record feeding patterns of babies and levels of professional support received was used. Growth was assessed by converting weights into standard deviation scores and using the differences to express weight velocity over a six-week period. Visual analogue scales were used to assess mothers' perceptions of their childre

Pneumothorax complicating small-bore feeding tube placement.

Small-bore Silastic feeding tubes are being used with increasing frequency for short- and long-term enteral hyperalimentation. We present three cases where these flexible tubes were passed into the tracheobronchial tree and then out into the pleural space. The result in each case was a pneumothorax or hydropneumothorax. These cases were collected at one community hospital over a 6-month period. A review of the current literature reveals reports of 10 similar cases. We conclude that, although the exact incidence of pleural complications of small-bore feeding tubes is unknown, it is not insignif

Model evaluation for automated scoring of electropenetrography waveform data from mosquitoes.

Electropenetrography (EPG) is a powerful tool for quantifying how arthropods interact with their hosts, but manually labeling EPG feeding behavior waveforms is subjective, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. Machine-learning models for supervised classification have achieved widespread success in pattern recognition in scientific contexts and have the potential to automate and standardize waveform labeling. Here, the performance of various common machine learning methods for EPG waveform labeling was compared using a representative dataset of Culex tarsalis EPG waveforms; the top five models
