Multiple brown tumors are more common in females and older age groups and an unlikely site is the long bones. We report a case of a 21-year-old male presenting with a pathological fracture at the left neck of the femur. Laboratory investigations showed elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and serum calcium levels (PTH-dependent hypercalcemia). A CT scan revealed multiple osteolytic lesions in the pelvis and femurs, and a Tc-99m sestamibi scan showed a solitary parathyroid adenoma. We demonstrate this rare case and illustrate the importance of the consideration of multiple brown tumors in young m

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY This paper aims to detect, through a retrospective study, the migration of the tips of used metal implants (K-wires or a screw) in the direction out from the proximal femoral epiphysis as a part of studied basic radiometric characteristics of the cohort, with no intention of the authors to evaluate the therapy outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS It was a retrospective multicentre study including patients of two orthopaedic clinics and one department of orthopaedics treated in the period 2005-2018. The same treatment procedure was used in all three centres. The "in situ" fixatio

BACKGROUND: Preoperative planning is fundamental for total hip arthroplasty. This study investigated the optimal femoral neck level for measuring femoral anteversion to predict postoperative stem anteversion in developmental dysplasia of the hip and determined the predictive role of average anteversion based on the sagittal 3-point fixation.
METHODS: Sixty-two Crowe type II/III dysplastic hips that underwent total hip arthroplasty were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative and postoperative anteversion was measured via 2-dimensional computed tomography. Anterior and posterior cortex antevers

INTRODUCTION: Femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) was first described in 1999 as abnormal abutment between the acetabulum and the femoral head and neck. Since then, it has been shown to be responsible for many acetabular labral tears and is implicated in the aetiology of osteoarthritis of the hip. This review introduces the concept of FAI and reports the key aspects of its diagnosis and management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted using the Pubmed database. Articles relating to the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatm

The proximal femur is a dynamic region whose internal architecture reflects the biomechanical demands of weight-bearing. It is composed of two major trabecular systems arranged along the lines of compressive and tensile stresses. Adaptive alterations in these trabeculae occur in a variety of disorders, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and ischemic necrosis. Plain film radiography and computed tomography (CT) have been utilized to study these changes and provide insight into the pathophysiology of these disorders. Analysis of the order of resorption of trabeculae in osteoporosis, the pro

PURPOSE: Negative buttress reduction should be avoided in the treatment of femoral neck fractures (FNFs) using conventional fixation. As the femoral neck system (FNS) has been recently developed and utilized widely to treat FNFs, the association of reduction quality with postoperative complications and clinical function has not been clarified. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of nonanatomical reduction in young patients with FNFs treated with FNS.
METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study included 58 patients with FNFs treated with FNS between Septembe

BACKGROUND: There are a variety of internal fixation methods for unstable femoral neck fractures (FNFs), but the best method is still unclear. Femoral neck system (FNS) is a dynamic angular stabilization system with cross screws, and is a new internal fixation implant designed for minimally invasive fixation of FNFs. In this study, we conducted a biomechanical comparison of FNS, InterTan nail and three cannulated screws for the treatment of Pauwels III FNFs and investigate the biomechanical properties of FNS.
METHODS: A total of 18 left artificial femurs were selected and randomly divide into

The rare case of a 5‑year-old girl with autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type 2, who suffered metaphyseal fractures of the femoral neck on both sides within 6 months is described. On the right side, the diagnosis was made 3 months after the onset of symptoms, so that a coxa vara occurred. The treatment was surgically treated through a valgus osteotomy with fixation of the femoral head with K‑wires. Three months after the operation, the girl complained of a painful restriction of movement on her left side. Radiologically, a metaphyseal femoral neck fracture without coxa vara was diagnosed and i

INTRODUCTION: There is no recent literature review comparing outcomes of fixation methods for nondisplaced stress fractures of the femoral neck.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature on operative fixation of femoral neck stress fractures was performed. Inclusion criteria consisted of diagnosis of nondisplaced femoral neck stress fractures, implants used for fixation, articles in English language or available English translation, all ages, and Level 1-5 evidence, documented time to healing, and incidence of complications. Statistical analysis was performed to compare outcomes.

Hip and groin pain in patients at-risk for femoral neck stress fracture demand a careful workup including advanced imaging in the setting of normal radiographs. A delay in diagnosis can lead to fracture displacement, which negatively impacts outcomes. Non-displaced tension-sided fractures and displaced fractures warrant operative fixation, while non-displaced compression-side fractures can be managed conservatively. Fixation with a sliding hip screw or cephalomedullary nail is recommended over cannulated screws. In addition, all patients should undergo a metabolic workup to identify correctabl

A study was made in Geneva of 14 patients with femoral neck fractures (7 subcapital and 7 trochanteric) to determine whether a certain degree of osteomalacia might be involved (group I). No patients with risks factors for osteomalacia were used. For ethical reasons, double tetracycline labelling was not possible and osteomalacia criteria were based on osteoid tissue values determined in a histomorphometric study directly on cancellous bone samples of the femoral head. A comparison was made with femoral head bone tissue taken from 12 patients with hip osteoarthritis at a distance from the remod

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of hip dysplasia in children with cerebral palsy (CP) usually includes varus rotational osteotomy (VRO) of the proximal femur. Several techniques of VRO (end-to-end, EE; end-to-side, ES) have been designed to maximize correction and minimize associated deformities. The goals of the current study were to establish the prevalence and contribution of caput valgum to coxa valga deformity in children with CP, compare the geometry of the proximal femur after EE and ES techniques of VRO, and document the response of the proximal femur to subsequent growth after VRO.

Forty-three vascularized iliac crest grafts in the femoral neck region in 38 patients were assessed with marrow scintigraphy. Twenty grafting procedures had been performed for treatment of fractures, 16 for nontraumatic osteonecrosis, and seven for focal bone lesions. Scintiscans were obtained preoperatively and in the early and late postoperative period. Anterior images of the hips were obtained 30 minutes after intravenous injection of 4 mCi (148 MBq) of technetium-99m tin colloid by using a gamma camera with a low-energy, general-purpose collimator. The viable graft was detected as an area
