Out of 286 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who had fiberoptic bronchoscopies performed for the diagnosis of pulmonary disease, 21 (7.3%) patients (Group I) had repeat procedures after 1 to 30 days (mean, 14.8 days) because of persistent pulmonary infiltrates despite therapy, and 46 (15.9%) patients (Group II) had repeat procedures after 2 to 32 months (mean, 7.5 months) because of recurrent pulmonary infiltrates after initial clinical and radiographic improvement. To assess the diagnostic value of upper intestinal fiber endoscopy in primary small intestinal lymphomas observed in an underdeveloped Mediterranean country, the endoscopic records of 40 patients (Group A) offering histologic evidence of lymphoma were compared with those of 80 patients (Group B) displaying clinical findings of small intestinal disease, but who eventually proved to be free of lymphoma after a complete work-up. The results of bronchography in 96 consecutive patients investigated for haemoptysis at Papworth Hospital from 1975 to 1983 were reviewed. None of the patients included in this study gave a history suggestive of bronchiectasis and neither chest radiography nor fibreoptic bronchoscopy had shown a cause for the bleeding. A new laser probe that converts argon laser energy to heat in a metallic cap on a fiberoptic fiber was compared with a bare argon laser fiberoptic catheter system for the dissolution of atherosclerotic obstructions under fluoroscopic guidance in 24 atherosclerotic rabbits. In a review of our experience with the extraction of foreign bodies using the fiberendoscope in 57 patients who ingested true foreign bodies and had food bolus impaction, we found 17 of the foreign bodies to be big metallic wires. Results of vitrectomy in 16 cases are reported. In one group of 7 patients the operation immediately preceded the extraction of a non-metallic or metallic capsulated foreign body by means of foreign body forceps, or a magnetized metal thread using the one- or two-way "pars plana" approach. As an alternative to hysterectomy in patients with excessive bleeding, the endometrium was destroyed by means of the neodymium-YAG laser. The photovaporization was done under direct vision through a hysteroscope. Twenty-two patients have been treated, all but one successfully, i.e., little or no menstrual flow. Functional aspects of the antral-pyloric segment were evaluated in 30 patients without gastroduodenal disorders by means of prolonged endoscopic observations. Diffusion tensor tractography(DTT) can theoretically be used in assessing the optic chiasmatic glioma(OCGs),which are still in debate about optimal treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of this technology in offering more information about the tumor, assisting the debulking surgery, and helping to anticipate visual outcomes. As a prospective cohort study, the enrolled patients received routine pre- and postoperative neuro-ophthalmology, neuroimaging, and endocrine examinations.
