Individual and neighborhood predictors of retention in care and viral suppression among Florida youth (aged 13-24) living with HIV in 2015.

Youth aged 13‒24, are less likely to be retained in HIV care and be virally suppressed than older age groups. This study aimed to assess predictors of retention in HIV care and viral suppression among a population-based cohort of youth (N=2,872) diagnosed with HIV between 1993 and 2014 in Florida. We used generalized estimating equations (GEE) to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs). Retention in care was defined as evidence of engagement in care (at least one laboratory test, physician visit, or antiretroviral therapy prescription refill), two or more times, at least three months apart during 201…

Potential Impact of Populations Drift on Botrytis Occurrence and Resistance to Multi- and Single-Site Fungicides in Florida Southern Highbush Blueberry Fields.

Incidence of blossom blight and Botrytis fruit rot (BFR), caused by Botrytis cinerea, on two southern highbush blueberry cultivars was evaluated in several blueberry fields grown in the vicinity (BB-Str(+)) or not (BB-Str(-)) of strawberry fields in central Florida. Blossom blight and BFR incidence were higher in BB-Str(+) fields in 2014 and significantly higher in 2015 compared to BB-Str(-) fields. In total, 613 B. cinerea isolates (i.e., 181 and 432 isolates from BB-Str(-) and BB-Str(+) fields, respectively) were collected. The isolates were evaluated for sensitivity to eight single-site and…

Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis taking biologic therapies in a dermatologic private practice in Miami, Florida.

BACKGROUND: The reactivation of a latent tuberculosis infection is one of the possible major events that may occur during biologic therapies for inflammatory chronic diseases such as psoriasis. Although its main screening test is regularly used in clinical practice, there are few studies about the prevalence of this silent mycobacterial infection and the rate of positive convertors during treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis receiving biologic therapy by using tuberculin skin test as a screening me

A new Haemogregarina species of the alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys temminckii (Testudines: Chelydridae), in Georgia and Florida that produces macromeronts in circulating erythrocytes.

Haemogregarina macrochelysi n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Haemogregarinidae) of the alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys temminckii, is characterized by slender, recurved gamonts 29-35 x 3-4.5 microm, in which the anterior limb comprises 48-54% of the total length. The gamont nucleus, 5-7.5 x 2-5 microm, is situated at approximately midbody of the gamont. Meronts typical of Haemogregarina occupying erythrocytes have 3-8 small, compact nuclei and are 13-17 x 4.5-9 microm. Erythrocytic meronts that contain larger, nearly square or rectangular nuclei become rounded, and then undergo 7 or more nuclear di

The importance of autumn rainfall and sentinel flock location to understanding the epidemiology of St. Louis encephalitis virus in Indian River County, Florida.

Culex nigripalpus adults were collected from sentinel chickens at 4 sites in Indian River Co. (IRC), Florida. Chickens located in well drained, open habitats attracted fewer Cx. nigripalpus than did those located in a moist, forested area, but the number of mosquitoes collected in the open habitats increased significantly with heavy autumn rainfall. All St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) seroconversions (11/674) during a 7-year period were from chickens located in open, well drained habitats. A comparison of monthly rainfall during years of known SLE activity in IRC with the 22-year average sh…

Temperature effects on productivity, respiration, and dissolved organic matter degradation in subtropical Florida waters following hurricane-driven riverine runoff and brownification.

Increasing ocean warming and storm-driven terrestrial inputs are reshaping subtropical coastal ecosystems. This study investigated how elevated temperature and humic acid enrichment, under both pre- and post-hurricane (Idalia, Debby, Helene and Milton) in situ and manipulated conditions, affect the metabolic rates of phytoplankton communities on the West Florida Shelf (WFS). We hypothesized that warming, combined with hurricane-driven humic inputs, would decrease primary production rates while enhancing respiration and dissolved organic matter (DOM) degradation, shifting system toward net hete…

The PrEParados Model: A Community-Based Approach to Engaging Preexposure Prophylaxis‒Eligible Men Into HIV Prevention Programs, South Florida, 2022‒2023.

South Florida is the domestic epicenter of the HIV epidemic. However, awareness of and access to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remain low. This report outlines lessons learned from the development and implementation of the PrEParados model-a spatially explicit, social network-based approach designed to engage adults in PrEP. Informed by social contagion theory, the PrEParados model integrates social network and geospatial methodologies to examine participant characteristics and gather information on their friendship, sexual, and substance use networks. (Am J Public Health. 2026;116(S1):S16-S2…

Characterizing Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia in a Hypertension Population Within the State of Florida Using Electronic Health Record-Based Data.

Hypertension is a known modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD). However, it is unknown how variance in hypertension control, antihypertensive medications, and social determinants of health, such as social deprivation index (SDI), influence the risk of developing ADRD. Validated hypertension computable phenotype algorithms were applied to electronic health record data from the OneFlorida Data Trust (1/1/2013-12/31/2016), to identify apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH), and hypertension-control levels (well-controlled hypertension, intermediate-co…

Using supervised machine learning algorithms to predict bovine leukemia virus seropositivity in dairy cattle in Florida: A 10-year retrospective study.

Supervised machine-learning (SML) algorithms are potentially powerful tools that may be used for screening cows for infectious diseases such as bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection. Here, we compared six different SML algorithms to identify the most important risk factors for predicting BLV seropositivity in dairy cattle in Florida. We used a dataset of 1279 dairy blood sample records from the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory that were submitted for BLV antibody testing from 2012 to 2022. The SML algorithms that we used were logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), gradient b…

Hurricane-induced dramatic decline and natural recovery of a vulnerable sportfish population: Shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) in the Chipola River, Florida.

Freshwater fishes are among the most biodiverse vertebrate groups and among the most threatened by anthropogenic activities. Many occur in small and geographically restricted populations that are increasingly subject to catastrophic events (hurricanes, wildfires, extreme floods and droughts), but it has rarely been possible to assess the impacts of such events. Here we document the decline and recovery of a regularly monitored, small shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) population in the Chipola River, Florida following a catastrophic hurricane disturbance. The Chipola River population has the …

Peer Influence on Motivation to Use Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Latino Sexual Minority Men in Miami, Florida: A Network Autocorrelation Model.

Despite the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) continue to experience disparities in PrEP uptake and subsequently, HIV vulnerability. Social network norms are an underutilized solution to increase PrEP uptake. We used a peer influence model (network autocorrelation model) to examine the role of social network descriptive norms (i.e., actual behaviors) surrounding PrEP use. A total of 11 sociocentric networks of 13 friends (n = 143 LSMM) were recruited into our study from 2018 to 2019 in South Florida. Most participants were in PrEP pre-contemplat…

Spatial and temporal analysis of HIV clinical outcomes in Florida reveals counties with persistent racial and ethnic disparities during 2012-2019.

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic disparities in the HIV care continuum have been well documented in the US, with especially striking inequalities in viral suppression rates between White and Black persons with HIV (PWH). The South is considered an epicenter of the HIV epidemic in the US, with the largest population of PWH living in Florida. It is unclear whether any disparities in viral suppression or immune reconstitution-a clinical outcome highly correlated with overall prognosis-have changed over time or are homogenous geographically. In this analysis, we 1) investigate longitudinal trends in vira…

An observational cohort study evaluating PrEP reach, engagement and persistence through a community-based mobile clinic in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

INTRODUCTION: Barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) access have limited its reach to priority populations. Community-based mobile clinics have potential to broaden PrEP engagement. We evaluated reach and persistence for fixed and mobile clinic cohorts in Miami-Dade County, Florida. METHODS: This observational cohort study analysed data from 1896 clients engaged through our fixed or mobile clinic from August 2018 to March 2023. Services were offered at no cost to clients. The same staff and package of barrier-lowering strategies was deployed across fixed and mobile clinic sites. Chi-squa…

Patient-Provider Relationships and Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence and Durable Viral Suppression Among Women with HIV, Miami-Dade County, Florida, 2021-2022.

Women with HIV in the United States are more negatively affected by adverse social determinants such as low education and poverty than men, and thus, especially need a supportive health care system. This cross-sectional study assessed the role of the patient-provider relationship on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and durable viral suppression among women with HIV (WHIV) in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Patient-provider relationship was measured, in part, using the Health Care Relationship Trust Scale and Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems. The survey was administere…

Mortality in Common (Sterna hirundo) and Sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) Terns Associated with Bisgaard Taxon 40 Infection on Marco Island, Florida, USA.

Widely distributed aquatic species such as terns are highly dependent on, and can serve as indicators of, the global health of marine and other aquatic environments. Documented mass mortality events in terns have been associated with anthropogenic, weather-related and, less commonly, infectious causes. This study describes a multispecies mortality event associated with brevetoxicosis and Bisgaard taxon 40-induced sepsis involving common (Sterna hirundo) and sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) terns off the southwest coast of Florida, USA, in November and December 2018. During an approximately 6…
