STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The exposed dentin of overdenture abutments can lead to caries. Therefore chemical protection is needed to prevent caries. Considering that dentin contains both organic and inorganic components, reinforcement of both components should give reasonable results. Tannin-fluoride preparation strengthens both the organic and inorganic components of teeth.

We previously described new bone formation in fluoride-treated osteoporotic patients. Since then, several investigators have contended that fluoride-induced "hot spots," as seen on bone scintigrams, represent stress fractures. To further evaluate this issue we analyzed scintigrams, radiographs, and quantitative computer tomography (CT) scans of the spine and femoral condyles from 129 patients, obtained before and during therapy. Hot spots, new or of increased intensity, were more than twice as common in the weight-bearing peripheral skeleton than in nonweight-bearing sites (p less than 0.001).

Fluoride incorporation into human enamel from an experimental sealant resin in vivo was investigated. The sealant consisted of a newly synthesized methacryloyl fluoride-methyl methacrylate (MF-MMA) copolymer resin, which contains acidic fluoride covalently bonded to carbonyl groups and releases fluoride ions slowly by hydrolysis in an aqueous environment. Four cases of osteosclerosis were observed in patients with renal failure. All subjects presented with moderate reduction in renal function which had been stabilized for several years. A one-generation, two-litter rat reproduction study was done in a kennel in Allegan County, Michigan, as part of an investigation of reproductive problems in Shetland sheepdogs (shelties). Utilizing a newly developed biopsy method, the F uptake in the outer 3 mum of enamel from a single topical application of neutral NaF or amine F solution was tested on cleaned and plaque-covered premolars in 12- to 14-year-old children.
