OBJECTIVE: To study the plasma folate concentrations in the third trimester of pregnant women and newborn babies so as to assess the association between them.
METHODS: Pregnant women in Yuanshi and Laoting counties in Hebei province from May to June in 2009 were recruited with related information collected at enrollment. Those pregnant women being enrolled were followed up until delivery. Maternal blood was collected before delivery, and cord blood was collected after the expulsion of the placenta. Data from 437 pairs of women and newborns were analyzed. Plasma folate concentration was measur

BACKGROUND: Folate is an essential B-vitamin that mediates one-carbon metabolism reactions, including nucleotide synthesis and others related to carcinogenesis. Both low- and high-folate status influences carcinogenesis.
METHODS: We used a mathematical model of folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism to predict the effect of a range of intracellular epithelial folate concentrations (0.25-15.0 μmol/L) on methylation rate and purine and thymidylate synthesis. We also examined the interaction of these folate concentrations with polymorphisms in two enzymes [methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MT

A 70-year-old man was diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 2005. He was treated with 1 g salazosulfapyridine (SASP) daily for two years. Hematological investigations conducted since 2005 demonstrated hemoglobin concentrations of 8 approximately 9 g/dl, which then dropped to 4.9 g/dl on November 21, 2007, following which he was admitted to our hospital. Megaloblastic anemia associated with SASP treatment and anemia of chronic disorders were diagnosed on the basis of folate deficiency and bone marrow examination. This report describes a case of megaloblastic anemia, which developed t

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a group of congenital malformations with worldwide distribution and complex aetio-pathogenesis. Animal studies indicate that there may be four sites of initiation of neural tube closure (NTC). Selective involvement of these sites may lead to defects varying from anencephaly to spina bifida. The NTC involves formation of medial and dorsolateral hinge points, convergent extension and a zipper release process. Proliferation and migration of neuroectodermal cells and its morphological changes brought about by microfilaments and other cytoskeletal proteins mediate NTC

DNA methylation is critical for normal genomic structure and function and is dependent on adequate folate status. A polymorphism (677C-->T) in a key folate enzyme, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), may impair DNA methylation when folate intake is inadequate and may increase the risk of reproductive abnormalities. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of the MTHFR 677C-->T polymorphism on changes in global DNA methylation in young women consuming a low folate diet followed by repletion with the current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Women (age 20-30 years) with

Background/Objectives: Adequate folate intake is required in preterm infants for rapid growth and development, but there is little evidence to back recommendations. We aimed to assess folate status in preterm infants at discharge and in early infancy, according to exposure to folate sources, particularly in those exclusively/predominantly breastfed. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was conducted in the UK, involving 45 preterm infants <33 weeks' gestational age (GA) exclusively/predominantly fed human milk when approaching NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) disc

Recent evidence suggests that poor fetal growth is associated with preconception anemia and first trimester iron deficiency. Periconceptional iron and folate supplementation may improve the effectiveness of iron supplementation programs during pregnancy by treating preexisting anemia, building iron stores, and reducing risk of neural tube defects. Our objective in this study was to describe the iron and folate status of married, nulliparous women in rural Bangladesh from March to May 2007. Of 272 women, 37% were anemic (hemoglobin <120 g/L), 13% were folate deficient (plasma folate <or=10 nmol

Folic acid deficiency is the most prevalent vitamin deficiency throughout the world and its effect on brush border membrane composition has not been studied earlier. We investigated the effect of folate deficiency on the structure and function of the intestinal brush border membrane. Various brush border enzyme activities, membrane sugars and lipids were evaluated in two groups of weanling male albino rats after 3 mo of feeding control and folate deficient diets. Except sucrase, all the other three enzymes, viz., alkaline phosphatase, leucine amino peptidase and y-glutamyl transpeptidase showe…

Acute folate deficiency with pancytopenia and megaloblastic haemopoiesis developed in four patients after abdominal operations; all four responded to folic acid over 3-9 days. Three of them had been given intravenous nutrition with amino-acid/ethanol before the blood changes developed. A prospective study of twenty-five surgical patients with gastrointestinal diseases revealed a high frequency of acutely developing negative folate balance. Megaloblastic haemopoiesis and consequent blood changes were found in five patients. Treatment with intravenous nutrition correlated strongly with a fall in

Pregnancy is a period characterized by extensive physiological changes in both the mother and fetus. During this period, the nutritional status of the mother has a profound and irreversible impact on her health and the growth and development of the fetus. The fetus depends exclusively on the mother and drives nutrients through the placenta. Therefore, mothers must be provided with a well-balanced diet that is adequate in both macro- and micronutrients. Most pregnant women generally manage to get adequate macronutrients; however, many women fail to get micronutrients up to the recommended dieta

The vitamin that is most commonly deficient in the American diet is folate. Severe folate deficiency in humans is known to cause megaloblastic anemia and developmental defects, and is associated with an increased incidence of several forms of human cancer. Although the exact mechanisms by which this vitamin deficiency may cause these diseases are not known at the present time, recent work has shown that folate deficiency also causes genomic instability and programmed cell death (or apoptosis). Additionally, it is known that the DNA mismatch repair pathway mediates folate deficiency-induced apo

BACKGROUND: Cognitive health is a public health concern among older adults. Dietary supplement (SUP) use is common and concerns have been raised about high folic acid intake among those with vitamin B-12 deficiency and exacerbation of poor cognitive performance (PCP).
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated SUP use, usual folic acid intake, and blood folate and vitamin B-12 concentrations in relation to cognitive performance.
METHODS: We used NHANES 2011-2014 data on adults aged ≥60 y (n = 2867) and estimated total usual folic acid intake from diet and supplements, vitamin B-12 intake from SUPs, blood fola

Micronutrient deficiencies remain widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting not only inadequate diets but also limitations in how current interventions are designed and delivered. Universal salt iodization (USI) has achieved broad population coverage and represents one of the most successful large-scale nutrition interventions globally. However, most fortification strategies continue to target single nutrients in isolation, missing opportunities to address overlapping deficiencies. Recent evidence from Ethiopia demonstrates that folic acid can be co-fortified with iodized salt without c

Background and objective: Often micronutrient deficiencies cannot be detected when patient is already following a long-term gluten-free diet with good compliance (LTGFDWGC). The aim of this narrative review is to evaluate the most recent literature that considers blood micronutrient deficiencies in LTGFDWGC subjects, in order to prepare dietary supplementation advice (DSA). Materials and methods: A research strategy was planned on PubMed by defining the following keywords: celiac disease, vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, and vitamin D. Results: This review included 73 studies. The few studies on
