Impacts of SNAP benefit increases on US child food insufficiency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic reversed a decade of progress in reducing child food insufficiency in the United States. Congress implemented a universal 15% increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from January 2021 through September 2021 to address rising child food hardship. METHODS: We conducted a difference-in-differences analysis using US Census Bureau data to evaluate the impact of this temporary expansion on child food insufficiency. We compared 9776 SNAP participating households with 18 961 eligible non-participating households, examining changes before

Exploring the possibilities and limitations of climate-smart agriculture for SDG 2 in West Africa.

Climate change continues to exacerbate food insecurity across West Africa, posing a major threat to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2: Zero Hunger). Despite the multifarious interventions implemented to mitigate its effects, climate vagaries such as floods, erratic weather patterns, droughts, and farmer-herder conflict, as well as weak policy implementation, have coincided with continued population growth, thereby worsening food insecurity in the sub-region. This study examines the possibilities and limitations of engaging climate-smart technologies to achieve SDG 2 in W…

Surviving more than cancer: the unseen toll of financial toxicity and basic needs insecurity in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of cancer are at elevated risk for financial challenges, food insecurity, and basic needs instability. However, little is known about their lived experiences. Hence, this study explored the lived experiences of financial toxicity, basic needs instability, and food insecurity among AYA survivors and described the impact of financial toxicity on the overall well-being of AYA survivors. METHODS: Using a systematic content analysis approach, this study examined 3,868 Reddit items (original posts and associated comments) drawn from 26 Reddit co…

The distribution of hunger in Canadian youth.

INTRODUCTION: As a foundation for prevention, evidence is required to establish the contemporary distribution of hunger in Canadian adolescents. We present findings from a nationally representative survey of young Canadians on how perceived hunger is distributed demographically, socially and contextually. METHODS: A probability-based sample of 15 656 young Canadians aged 11 to 15 years who completed the 2017/18 cycle of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study was used. Descriptive statistics and multivariable regression analyses were used to profile the study population and the dis

Acceptability and Satisfaction of Eat My ABCs: A Mindful Eating Program for Preschoolers in Low-Income Families.

BACKGROUND: Mindful eating strategies have shown promise in addressing obesity and food insecurity among children. However, limited research has examined the acceptability of mindful eating programs among low-socioeconomic families in rural areas. This study evaluated caregivers' and teachers' acceptability and satisfaction with a 14-week, school-based mindful eating program for preschoolers to inform future implementation. The program effectively improved home eating environment, household food insecurity, and child body mass index. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed methods study design w…

Household Food Security and Infant Adiposity.

OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity has been associated with obesity, but previous studies are inconsistent and few included infants. We examined associations between household food security and infant adiposity and assessed the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as effect modifiers. We hypothesized that infants from food-insecure households would have greater adiposity, with attenuation by WIC and SNAP. METHODS: We repeatedly measured 666 infants from the southeastern United States in 2013-2017. We catego…

Promising Practices to Promote Snap at Schools: A Quantitative Analysis of Snap Outreach Efforts.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, 17.9% of US households with children experienced food insecurity. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to reduce food insecurity, persistent under-enrollment, labeled the "SNAP Gap," limits its impact. Schools represent a strategic yet underutilized setting to reach eligible families. This study examined school-based strategies to increase caregivers' awareness and knowledge of SNAP. METHODS: Twelve diverse school districts implemented stigma-free SNAP outreach initiatives, reaching 8601 participants across 37 outreach events statewide. Caregive…

Indigenous Knowledge and Food-Based Coping Mechanisms for ART Side Effects: A Qualitative Inquiry.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is critical for managing HIV, yet side effects and food insecurity present significant barriers in resource-limited settings. While the role of formal support is recognized, the use of indigenous knowledge and food-based coping mechanisms remains an underdocumented facet of self-management. This study explored how individuals in Ghana utilize local foods and cultural knowledge to manage ART side effects and support adherence. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Through sem…
