Background Tuberculosis (TB) outcomes are strongly influenced by age-related factors and coexisting chronic illnesses. With a rapidly aging population and a rising non-communicable disease burden in India, understanding how comorbidities affect clinical presentation and treatment outcomes among geriatric TB patients is essential for optimizing programmatic care under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). Methods This retrospective comparative cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi and included 951 adult TB patients enrolled under NTEP between Marc

BACKGROUND: The rejection of an application for ambulant geriatric rehabilitation (AGRV) is usually justified by the argument that non-pharmaceutical therapy prescribed by doctors accredited by social housing institutions (SHI) would suffice. The reality in healthcare during the 6 months following an application is unknown.
METHODS: In this study 203 patients who had made an application for AGRV in the second half of 2010 in Flensburg, Lübeck or Ratzeburg were interviewed by telephone.
RESULTS: The survey revealed that 25.7% of the applications for AGRV had been rejected. The majority of the

Increasing life expectancy has led to a rise in the number of elderly patients with incidental small renal masses (SRMs). These tumors often show slow growth and can be safely monitored in selected cases. Studies demonstrate effective oncological control through active surveillance in elderly patients, particularly in those with low tumor progression and significant comorbidities. Histological subtype impacts growth behavior and metastatic potential. While a biopsy may help to avoid overtreatment, its value must be critically assessed in older patients. Surgical treatment, including partial an

Changes in horse management and use mean that a growing number of horses are now kept into older age, while age-specific management practices for these animals remain insufficiently documented. This cross-sectional online survey aimed to describe the housing, feeding, activity, behaviour and care routines of horses aged 20 years and older in Germany, based on 923 questionnaires completed by horse owners about their senior horses. Most horses maintained regular tactile social contact (87.4%, n = 805), and over half were still ridden or driven (61.6%, n = 566). However, the proportion of horses

IMPORTANCE: Establishing an efficient and accurate frailty measure in older women with bothersome urinary incontinence (UI) is necessary because frailty increases the risk of UI treatment failure and postoperative morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to primarily observe associations between the clinical frailty measure of gait speed and the electronic frailty index (eFI) to determine if the eFI may be a proxy in determining presence of frailty in older women with moderate-to-severe UI symptoms.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort study of women, older

Background/Objectives: Loneliness is a clinically relevant psychosocial factor in later life and has been associated with adverse mental, cognitive, and physical health outcomes. Views on ageing may shape social engagement, coping, and perceived belonging, but evidence from geriatric patient populations remains limited. This study examined whether views on ageing are associated with loneliness in geriatric patients. Secondary analyses explored subjective age, including felt age and the perceived onset of old age. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis used baseline data from two prospective ob

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium is an acute, fluctuating neurocognitive syndrome. It is among the most common perioperative complications in older patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, a prolonged length of stay, complications, and persistent cognitive impairment. After major head and neck procedures, the risk is particularly high; risk factors often accumulate, including advanced age, pre-existing cognitive impairment, high American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status, polypharmacy, malnutrition, and prolonged operative time. No established pharmacologica

BACKGROUND: Since aging is associated with pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes, polypharmacy is particularly harmful in older adults. Meanwhile, clinical pharmacists contribute to safer prescribing by applying their clinical expertise during medication review. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize potential drug-related problems through the analysis of routine pharmaceutical interventions.
METHODS: Data were collected from the electronic health record between 2019 and 2025; potentially inappropriate medications and high-risk medications were identified. Drug-related problems wer

UNLABELLED: Currently, it is unknown whether hyperkyphosis is associated with lower physical function in older persons with frailty, who have a high risk of functional decline. Hyperkyphosis was highly prevalent and independently associated with lower physical function. Early detection and treatment of hyperkyphosis may contribute to the preservation of physical function.
PURPOSE: To investigate the association between hyperkyphosis and physical function in older persons with frailty, who have a high risk of functional decline METHODS: Hyperkyphosis was defined as a Cobb angle ≥ 50°, ≥ 3.4 cm

BACKGROUND: Odontoid fractures are the most common cervical spine injuries in geriatric patients and are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Their incidence is increasing with population aging. Optimal management remains controversial, particularly due to poor bone quality and comorbidities in this patient group. While surgical treatment is associated with lower nonunion rates, its impact on survival and patient-reported outcomes is unclear.
METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included patients with odontoid fractures who were treated conservatively or surgically

Due to the convincing evidence showing sustained reduction in mortality due to interdisciplinary multidimensional management of geriatric hip fracture patients, the "Guidelines for the care of proximal femoral fractures" of the German Federal Joint Committee came into force stepwise from 2021 onwards. The interdisciplinary concept enables a holistic view and multidimensional treatment approaches for geriatric trauma patients. The team approach and joint responsibility enables addressing the special needs of this vulnerable patient group effectively during the inpatient stay. The aim is the av

BACKGROUND: The world is experiencing a demographic shift towards a larger proportion of older people. This has important consequences for the healthcare system, including neurosurgical departments. Geriatric patients represent a range of unique challenges related to treatment, resource allocation, prioritization and ethical concerns. In order to meet the challenge of increasing demand of geriatric neurosurgical care, and prepare for planning and establishment of health service requirements, we must first understand the demographic trends, common diagnoses, and types of procedures geriatric pa

BACKGROUND: Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic with N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor blockade, has become increasingly popular in geriatric anesthesia because of its hemodynamic stability, lack of respiratory depression, and possible neuroprotective properties. Yet, its effect on cognitive function in elderly surgical patients is unknown. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) and postoperative delirium (POD) are frequent complications in elderly surgical patients, resulting in longer hospital stays, higher healthcare costs, and long-term cognitive impairment. Although there is some e

Oral health is important for the overall health of an individual, particularly older adults. However, a number of obstacles frequently prevent older people from receiving timely and appropriate dental care. These obstacles are intricate and multifaceted, involving systemic diseases, cognitive elements, and psychological, financial, and educational issues. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are examples of cognitive impairments that can make it difficult for an elderly person to seek or cooperate with dental treatment. Additional psychological factors that decrease care-seeking behaviour include
