The revival of fosfomycin.

Fosfomycin, originally named phosphonomycin, was discovered in Spain in 1969. There are three forms of fosfomycin: fosfomycin tromethamine (a soluble salt) and fosfomycin calcium for oral use, and fosfomycin disodium for intravenous use. Fosfomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic that interferes with cell wall synthesis in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting the initial step involving phosphoenolpyruvate synthetase. It has a broad spectrum of activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is highly active against Gram-positive pathogens such

N-Aminoacyl and N-hydroxyacyl derivatives of diosgenyl 2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranoside: Synthesis, antimicrobial and hemolytic activities.

Diosgenyl 2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranoside is a semisynthetic saponin with antimicrobial and antitumor activities. To search for more effective analogues, N-aminoacyl and N-hydroxyacyl derivatives of this saponin were synthesized conventionally and with microwave assistance, and tested against the human pathogenic fungi and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. None of the tested compounds exhibit activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Almost all of the synthesized N-aminoacyl saponins exhibit antifungal activity and act effectively against Gram-positive bacteria, some better than the…

Mounting resistance of uropathogens to antimicrobial agents: A retrospective study in patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis relapse.

PURPOSE: Despite recent progress in the management of chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP), many cases relapse. Increased drug resistance patterns of responsible bacteria have been proposed as the most probable causative factor. Driven by the limited number of previous studies addressing this topic, we aimed to study whether antibiotic resistance increases in patients with CBP when relapse occurs. A secondary aim of this study was to determine the resistance patterns of responsible bacteria from patients with CBP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study material consisted of bacterial isolates from u

CsPTX1, a pentraxin of Cynoglossus semilaevis, is an innate immunity factor with antibacterial effects.

Pentraxin 1 (PTX1) is a member of the pentraxin protein family, which plays important roles in the innate immunity of vertebrates. In fish, the biological function of PTX1 is essentially unknown. In this study, we examined the expression and function of a PTX homologue (CsPTX1) from the tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis. CsPTX1 contains 223 amino acids and shares 49.3%-38.8% overall sequence identity with other known fish pentraxins. CsPTX1 is expressed in multiple tissues and is upregulated by bacterial and viral infection. CsPTX1 contains a pentraxin domain, which is known to bind extracel

Device-associated infections in the intensive care units of Cyprus: results of the first national incidence study.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) has become an integral part of infection control programs in several countries, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. In contrast, surveillance data on the epidemiology of ICU-acquired infections in Cyprus are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of ICU-acquired infections and to identify areas for improvement in Cypriot hospitals by comparing observed incidence rates with international benchmarks and by specifying the microbiological and antibiotic resistance profiles of infecting organisms.

Prognostic evaluation of bacteremia and fungemia in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

The incidence of bacterial infections in general and of bacteremia in particular is high among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The factors influencing the prognosis of bacteremia in these patients are not well known. In order to better define those factors associated with a poor prognosis, all episodes of bacteremia or fungemia in patients with AIDS who were hospitalized in four general hospitals between 1 September 1987 and 31 December 1996 were studied prospectively. Among 1,390 patients diagnosed with AIDS, 238 (17.1%) developed 274 episodes of bacteremia or fungemi
