Hair replacement surgery for male pattern alopecia.

Male pattern alopecia is the most common type of hair loss encountered. Although this malady has no direct adverse consequences on physical health, physicians should be aware of the impact hair loss may have on a man's self-esteem. This type of hair loss and current hair replacement surgical techniques are discussed.

Eruptive vellus hair cysts with sebaceous glands.

A patient is described who had eruptive vellus hair cysts with and without sebaceous glands in the cyst walls. An association is suggested between eruptive vellus hair cysts and the condition of steatocystoma multiplex.

Mosaic hair color changes in alopecia areata.

This paper documents the mosaic hair color changes in two patients with extensive alopecia areata. The authors suggest that these changes are the end result of localized immunologic reactions directed against the melanocyte, resulting in a cytotoxic effect on the melanocytes and altering the hair color. Visually, the change is identified as patchy lightening, occasional depigmentation, and whitening of existing scalp hair. These changes reflect increased activity and progression of alopecia areata.

Congenital hypothyroidism, spiky hair, and cleft palate.

Two brothers are described with athyroidal hypothyroidism, spiky hair, choanal atresia, cleft palate, and bifid epiglottis. Polyhydramnios was present in the third trimester of each pregnancy. These abnormalities appear to represent a new syndrome.

Hair loss. Common congenital and acquired causes.

Hair loss is a common problem likely to be encountered by a clinical practitioner. The most frequent causes of hair loss in pediatric patients include tinea capitis, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania. In the adult population, causes to be considered are alopecia areata and hair loss associated with systemic disease and hormonal influence. The clinician must be able to separate the types and causes of hair loss into those that reflect primary dermatologic conditions and those that represent reaction to systemic disease.

[Hair loss during treatment with oral contraceptives].

Oral contraceptives with a dominant androgen component can cause or worsen androgen-dependent alopecia in women. This diagnosis can only be made if other causes of alopecia (which can occur at the same time as treatment with oral contraceptives) have been excluded. The patient's endocrine profile must be investigated sometimes, this being in order to detect any excess production of androgens. These types of alopecia call for the stopping of the oral contraceptive and sometimes also calls for oral anti-antigen treatment.

Hair root analysis in X-linked ichthyosis.

Hair roots have been analysed in a large kindred with X-linked ichthyosis associated with steroid sulphatase deficiency. Enzyme activity in individual hair roots was assayed for the steroid sulphatase:neutral alpha-glucosidase ratio, the latter serving as an indicator of the general metabolic activity of the hair root. The distribution of the enzyme ratios in the individual hair roots in the heterozygotes described a normal curve suggesting origin from a single population of cells. The results differed strikingly from the irregular distribution of enzyme activities in hair roots of Lesch-Nyhan…

[Molluscum contagiosum with hair follicle-like differentiation].

Mollusca contagiosa are histologically characterized by several small lobules opening to a common porus. We have report on a histological deviation from this uniform picture showing differentiation of these lobules into hair follicle-like structures extending deep into the dermis.

Polyamine metabolism in Menkes kinky hair disease.

Clinical investigations of the urinary excretion of putrescine and the polyamines spermidine and spermine in a patient with Menkes kinky hair disease are reported. This disorder, characterized by intra- and extracellular copper deficiency, is associated with significant depression of diamine oxidase and monoamine oxidase activity. Urinary excretion of diamine and polyamines, monitored over a 2-month interval in a 4-month old patient with Menkes kinky hair disease, documented a 3- to 10-fold increase in the excretion of free putrescine, spermidine and spermine as well as the conjugated derivati…

Caffeine as an Active Molecule in Cosmetic Products for Hair Loss: Its Mechanisms of Action in the Context of Hair Physiology and Pathology.

Caffeine has recently attracted attention as a potential remedy for hair loss. In the present review, we look into the molecule's possible mechanisms of action and pharmacodynamics. At the molecular level, it appears that the physiological effects of caffeine are mainly due to the molecule's interaction with adenosine pathways which leads to an increase in cAMP level and the stimulation of metabolic activity in the hair follicle. Moreover, caffeine also acts as an antioxidant and may prevent degenerative processes. While the intact stratum corneum seems virtually impenetrable to caffeine and a…

A Clinico-Trichoscopic Analysis of Hair Density and Diameter Variability in Relation to Severity Grading of Female Pattern Hair Loss.

CONTEXT: Hair loss is a common complaint among Indian women. For female pattern hair loss (FPHL), diagnosis is primarily clinical. In the early stages, it can be confused with other conditions. Histopathology is the diagnostic method of choice but requires multiple biopsies and can be disfiguring. Trichoscopy is an alternative noninvasive, rapid tool. AIM: The aim of this study is to study the hair density and hair diameter variance in relation with severity grading of FPHL. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety women aged 18 years and above were included…

Frontal fibrosing alopecia with involvement of the central hair part: distribution of hair loss corresponding to areas of sunscreen application.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) typically presents with band-like scarring alopecia in the frontal and temporal hairline along with eyebrow loss. Although this type of hair loss is being seen with increased frequency worldwide, the etiology of the condition is unknown. Studies have suggested a potential environmental role with moisturizers and sunscreens being possible triggers. Herein, we present a 42-year-old woman with a biopsy-proven diagnosis of frontal fibrosing alopecia. In addition to the typical pattern, she also had a striking linear patch of hair loss along her central part. This w…
