Each year over 20,000 youth age out of the child welfare system without reaching a permanent placement in a family. Certain children, such as those spending extended time in foster care, with a diagnosed disability, or adolescents, are at the highest risk for aging out. As young adults, this population is at and increased risk of incarceration; food, housing, and income insecurity; unemployment; educational deficits; receipt of public assistance; and mental health disorders. We reviewed the literature on foster care legislation, permanency, outcomes, and interventions. The outcomes of children

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: New parents who have previously experienced psychosis outside and/or following childbirth have an increased likelihood of experiencing an episode during the postpartum period. The decision to try to conceive can be agonising. Receiving care from a specialist perinatal community mental health team can improve outcomes. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This article offers a first-person insight into the steps the author took to minimise the impact of an episode of postpartum psychosis and/or postnatal depression whilst navigating new motherhood. BACKGROUND: With an increased life expectancy for the general population as well as for those ageing with chronic diseases, there are major challenges to the affected individuals and their families, but also to health care and societal planning. Most important, an increasing proportion of older people remain living in their ordinary homes despite health decline and disability. However, little is known about the home and health situation of people ageing with Parkinson's disease (PD), and older people are often excluded from PD-research.
METHODS/DESIGN: The overall aim of the present project i

Objective The Health Management Support Program for public assistance recipients is now mandatory at welfare offices nationwide and primarily targets recipients aged ≥40 years. However, limited access to data from other health and welfare programs that take priority over public assistance creates structural barriers to evidence-based health support. During development of its 2016 policy to optimize medical assistance, Toyonaka City identified fragmented data and unmet needs among younger recipients. Therefore, health data from other municipal departments were linked to visualize the health sta

BACKGROUND: Repetitive movements of the upper limbs at work can cause the onset of musculo-skeletal disorders and therefore an adequate planning of health surveillance is needed. A Work Group on this problem was constituted in Brescia, Italy, following the great interest raised by recent scientific meetings on this topic.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the Group was to prepare a proposal for a health surveillance protocol for the use of Occupational Health Physicians.
RESULTS: Health surveillance for the prevention of upper limb disorders must be based on the degree of risk. The risk assessment proc

Youth suicide is a pressing public health concern requiring coordinated, cross-sector responses. This research presents findings from a pilot initiative involving ten California counties that used a multi-site participatory system mapping design to assess and strengthen youth crisis reporting and response systems. Funded through the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative and supported by the California Department of Public Health, the pilot used visual tools to identify gaps, clarify roles, and promote shared understanding across sectors. System maps focused on six key components of c

Public health restrictions to protect physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic had unintended effects on mental health, which may have disproportionately affected some potentially vulnerable groups. This scoping review of qualitative research provides a narrative synthesis of new mothers' perspectives on their mental health during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions through pregnancy to the postpartum period. Database searches in PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO sought primary research studies published until February 2023, which focused on new mothers' self-perceived mental health during the pande

Digital Twins for Health (DT4H), defined as dynamic, data-driven, in silico representations of individuals, organs, medical devices, clinical workflows, or healthcare systems, are emerging as a promising paradigm for transforming healthcare. DT4H systems have the potential to advance personalized medicine, treatment optimization, disease prediction, drug discovery, clinical trials, and health system planning. However, their real-world development and deployment also raise important ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI). Because DT4H systems rely on sensitive longitudinal health data a

Acute musculoskeletal (MSK) pain remains a leading contributor to global disability, with little reduction in its burden over the past three decades. Despite increasing recognition of the prognostic role of psychological comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and stress, clinical care for MSK pain continues to prioritize biomedical interventions, often at the expense of psychosocial considerations. This disconnect is particularly evident in emergency department (ED) settings, where care pathways focus on immediate physical assessment and discharge planning, with limited integration of ment

BACKGROUND: Each year more than 200,000 pregnant people become sick with TB, but little is known about how to optimize their diagnosis and therapy. Although there is a need for further research in this population, it is important to recognize that much can be done to improve the services they currently receive.METHODS: Following a systematic review of the literature and the input of a global team of health professionals, a series of best practices for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of TB during pregnancy were developed.RESULTS: Best practices were developed for each of the following a

PURPOSE: Cyberattacks are increasing in health care and cause immediate disruption to patient care, have a lasting impact, and compromise scientific integrity of affected clinical trials. On the May 14, 2021, the Irish health service was the victim of a nationwide ransomware attack. Patient care was disrupted across 4,000 locations, including 18 cancer clinical trials units associated with Cancer Trials Ireland (CTI). This report analyses the impact of the cyberattack on the organization and proposes steps to mitigate the impact of future cyberattacks.

Background/Objectives: Antenatal depressive symptoms are common but frequently under-recognized. Although mental health literacy may support symptom recognition and help-seeking, its relationship with antenatal depressive symptoms remains unclear. This study examined the association between overall mental health literacy and antenatal depressive symptoms among women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Methods: This cross-sectional correlational study included 568 pregnant women consecutively recruited from a university hospital's obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics. The E

Achieving health equity requires addressing social determinants of health. Promoting health equity as it relates to cancer control is one of six priorities of the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP). This article describes recent activities implemented by three NCCCP awardees (North-west Portland Area Indian Health Board, Kansas, Michigan) and the CDC-funded National Behavior Health Network (NBHN), whose aim is to reduce health disparities among those with mental health and/or substance disorders. North-west Portland administered tribal surveys to help better understand triba

Group prenatal care (GPC) is a novel model of health care delivery for pregnant patients. In GPC, a small group of patients of similar gestational age meet at scheduled intervals for both medical care and facilitated educational discussions. This care model encourages better communication and engages patients and providers in a supportive community. There is evidence that GPC leads to improved patient and provider satisfaction, health equity, and maternal and neonatal outcomes. Delivery of prenatal care in a group setting is a significant change from the traditional model and takes willingness

In current clinical practice, adequate cardiovascular risk reduction is difficult to achieve. Treatment is primarily focused on clinical vascular disease and not on long-term risk reduction. Pertinent to success in vascular risk reduction are proper medication use, weight control, healthy food choices, smoking cessation, and physical exercise. Atherosclerotic vascular disease and its risk constitute a chronic condition, which poses specific requirements on affected patients and caregivers who should be aware of the chronicity. In patients with vascular disease, there is lack of awareness of th

Despite established efficacy for oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing HIV incidence, multi-level barriers within the health system, clinics, and the processes that shape practice have hindered service delivery and subsequent population-level effects. We applied the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to assess the context of PrEP delivery for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in rural South Africa and identify the factors supporting and impeding PrEP implementation to develop strategies to improve PrEP delivery. Between 2021 and 2022, we conducted in-dep

The Alzheimer care pathway in France has been structured through national plans to address an initially fragmented care system. It relies on coordinated diagnosis, home-support measures and respite solutions for caregivers. Despite progress, territorial inequalities persist. The future is geared towards a preventive shift, with the Integrated Care for Older People programme, and improved territorial coordination, thanks to the territorial professional health communities and mobile teams.

SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy can adversely affect maternal and neonatal health, although risks vary depending on the variant of concern (VOC). Omicron, although highly infectious, causes fewer maternal and neonatal complications than earlier VOC, so vaccination may be considered unnecessary in planned pregnancy. Using data from the CRONOS registry, we compared pregnancy outcomes according to VOC and vaccination status. We found that vaccination during pregnancy reduced preterm birth rates compared with unvaccinated or vaccinated women with Omicron infection, without increasing severe
