Objective Assessment System for Hearing Prediction Based on Stimulus-Frequency Otoacoustic Emissions.

Stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) can be useful tools for assessing cochlear function noninvasively. However, there is a lack of reports describing their utility in predicting hearing capabilities. Data for model training were collected from 245 and 839 ears with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss, respectively. Based on SFOAEs, this study developed an objective assessment system consisting of three mutually independent modules, with the routine test module and the fast test module used for threshold prediction and the hearing screening module for identifying hearing

Tinnitus and Self-Perceived Hearing Handicap in Firefighters: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Firefighters are susceptible to auditory dysfunction due to long-term exposure to noise from sirens, air horns, equipment, and tools used in forcible entry, ventilation, and extrication. In addition, they are exposed to ototoxic chemicals, particularly, during overhaul operations. Studies indicate that 40% of firefighters have hearing loss in the noise-sensitive frequencies of 4 and 6 kHz. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is often accompanied by tinnitus, which is characterized by ringing noise in the ears. The presence of phantom sounds can adversely affect the performance of firefighters. H

Unilateral hearing losses alter loud sound-induced temporary threshold shifts and efferent effects in the normal-hearing ear.

In animals with bilaterally normal hearing, olivocochlear pathways can protect the cochlea from the temporary shifts in hearing sensitivity (temporary threshold shifts; TTSs) caused by short-duration intense loud sounds. The crossed olivocochlear pathway provides protection during binaural loud sound, and uncrossed pathways protect when monaural or binaural loud sounds occur in noise backgrounds. Here I demonstrate that when there is a chronic unilateral hearing loss, effects of loud sounds, and efferent effects on loud sound, in the normal-hearing ear differ markedly from normal. Loss of TMCC2 activates endoplasm reticulum stress and causes auditory hair cell death.

As the auditory and balance receptor cells in the inner ear, hair cells are responsible for converting mechanical stimuli into electrical signals, a process referred to as mechano-electrical transduction. Hair cell development and function are tightly regulated, and hair cell deficits are the main reasons for hearing loss and balance disorders. TMCC2 is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-residing transmembrane protein whose physiological function largely remains unknown. In the present work, we show that Tmcc2 is specifically expressed in the auditory hair cells of mouse inner ear. Tmcc2 knockout m

[Upward spread of masking in normal and abnormal ears].

Upward spread of masking was studied for normals and sensorineurally hearing-impaired subjects with high-frequency hearing loss. Hearing-impaired listeners were recruited in such a way as to present normal hearing on the frequency of the masker, that is a narrow band of noise centered at 1 000 Hz. Levels of the masker were set at 70, 80 and 90 dB, respectively. Results first indicated the presence of a relationship between masked and elevated absolute thresholds for a masker level of 70 dB. At masker levels of 80 and 90 dB, hearing-impaired listeners showed excessive upward spread of masking i

Novel form of X-linked nonsyndromic hearing loss with cochlear malformation caused by a mutation in the type IV collagen gene COL4A6.

Hereditary hearing loss is the most common human sensorineural disorder. Genetic causes are highly heterogeneous, with mutations detected in >40 genes associated with nonsyndromic hearing loss, to date. Whereas autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant inheritance is prevalent, X-linked forms of nonsyndromic hearing impairment are extremely rare. Here, we present a Hungarian three-generation family with X-linked nonsyndromic congenital hearing loss and the underlying genetic defect. Next-generation sequencing and subsequent segregation analysis detected a missense mutation (c.1771G>A, p.Gly59

Speech Perception and Dichotic Listening Are Associated With Hearing Thresholds and Cognition, Respectively, in Unaided Presbycusis.

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a prevalent condition in the elderly population, which affects oral communication, especially in background noise, and has been associated with social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. However, the mechanisms that relate hearing loss with cognition are complex and still elusive. Importantly, recent studies show that the use of hearing aids in presbycusis, which is its standard management, can induce neuroplasticity and modify performance in cognitive tests. As the majority of the previous studies on audition and cognition obtained their re

[The use of functional multispiral computed tomography for differential diagnostics of otosclerosis and congenital malformation of the internal and middle ear (a case report)].

This paper reports a rare clinical observation of congenital malformation of the internal and middle ear diagnosed with the help of functional multispiral computed tomography (fMSCT). The patient presenting with conductive hearing loss was suspected to have otosclerosis. However, the use of fMSCT made it possible to arrive at a more precise diagnosis, that is congenital malformation of the internal and middle ear that clinically manifested itself as the conductive loss of hearing. It was decided to refrain from the surgical intervention: first, because its efficacy in this case was considered

Long-term effect of otosclerosis on bone conduction.

There have not been many studies of long-term sensorineural function in otosclerosis. The reports of long-term follow-up of lateral canal fenestration cases show a surprising stability of bone conduction. Because the experience of the senior author in stapes surgery suggests that some patients with clinically proven otosclerosis have a tendency for progression of sensorineural hearing loss, a review of over 500 ears in patients with proven otosclerosis was undertaken. Data from the study indicate that patients with otosclerosis have more sensorineural hearing loss than the general population.

MicroRNAs as potential biomarkers for monitoring of acquired sensorineural hearing loss.

Presbyacusis, sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), noise-induced hearing loss, and drug-induced deafness are the most common types of acquired SNHL. At present, the diagnosis of these hearing disorders is mainly based on the medical history and audiological examination. Due to the lack of diagnostic biomarkers, diagnosis of acquired sensorineural hearing loss is difficult. Previous studies have suggested that microRNAs (miRNAs) serve essential roles in pathophysiological processes, and they are stable, tissue enriched, and could be determined in a quantitative manner. Therefore, they coul

Temporal bone findings in a case of otopalatodigital syndrome.

The principal features of the otopalatodigital syndrome are hearing loss, cleft palate, and skeletal dysplasia of the hands and feet. The right temporal bone was acquired from a boy with this syndrome who died at the age of 2 1/2 years. Behavioral audiometry had indicated a conductive hearing loss, with probable near-normal sensorineural function; brainstem evoked response audiometry indicated a mild sensorineural hearing loss. Histologic studies of the temporal bone revealed dysmorphic features in both the middle ear and the bony labyrinth. The ossicles were deformed, the stapes was fixed, an

Effect of bilateral auditory cortex lesions on absolute thresholds in Japanese macaques.

1. The behavioral audiograms of four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were assessed before and after receiving two-stage bilateral lesions of auditory cortex. Thresholds were assessed for each ear with the use of insertion earphones. 2. The bilateral lesions resulted in a large initial hearing loss followed by partial recovery that left the animals with a permanent hearing loss in both ears. 3. The initial hearing loss consisted of a total insensitivity to sound in the ear contralateral to the second lesion with limited hearing in the other ear. However, the animal with the most complete les

Progressive visual and hearing loss secondary to neurosyphilis.

PURPOSE: There is a rising incidence of syphilis in economically advanced countries. Early diagnosis can spare the patient devastating vision and hearing loss, as well as other significant morbidity. Ocular presentations of neurosyphilis are varied and numerous, requiring syphilis to be considered in many clinical situations, even if a negative medical history is reported. Features of Argyll Robertson pupils, however, are virtually pathognomonic of syphilis; therefore, careful pupil testing can be the key to making a correct and timely diagnosis. Zebrafish swimming behavior as a biomarker for ototoxicity-induced hair cell damage: a high-throughput drug development platform targeting hearing loss.

Hearing loss is one of the most common human sensory disabilities, adversely affecting communication, socialization, mood, physical functioning, and quality of life. In addition to age and noise-induced damage, ototoxicity is a common cause of sensorineural hearing loss with chemotherapeutic agents, for example, cisplatin, being a major contributor. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an excellent model to study hearing loss as they have neurosensory hair cells on their body surface that are structurally similar to those within the human inner ear. Anatomic assays of toxin-mediated hair cell damage in

Association between the number of pregnancies and hearing loss: NHANES 1999-2018.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss represents an escalating global health concern with profound implications for individuals and society. While prior studies suggest that reproductive factors may influence women's auditory health, the specific association between the number of pregnancies and auditory function remains inadequately understood. This research aimed to investigate the association between the number of pregnancies and hearing loss in U.S. women. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 5,269 U.S. women aged 20 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Sur
