Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is a high prevalence of chronic infectious pathogens, though not necessarily lead to symptoms, but it can affect the immune system. More than of the world's population harbors the bacterium, and most adult Hp infection was obtained in childhood. Hp infection is a major cause of peptic ulcer, although children rarely suffer from peptic ulcer disease. Hp infection is closely related to chronic gastritis, dyspepsia, chronic diarrhea and recurrent abdominal pain in children. In recent years, Hp infection may also participate in some of non-digestive diseases, such as child…

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is still the most prevalent infection of the world. Colonization of the stomach by this agent will invariably induce chronic gastritis which is a low-grade inflammatory state leading to local complications (peptic ulcer, gastric cancer, lymphoma) and remote manifestations. While H. pylori does not enter circulation, these extragastric manifestations are probably mediated by the cytokines and acute phase proteins produced by the inflammed mucosa. The epidemiologic link between the H. pylori infection and metabolic changes is inconstant and controversial. Growth d…

Helicobacter pylori has been associated with colonization of gastro duodenal mucosa of humans from millions of years. The main burden of the disese is in the developing countries, due to overcrowding and poor hygiene. If left untreated it leads to lot of sequlae from minor to sinister diseases over a period of time. The main challenges that remain are prevention of H. pylori-related diseases by effective treatment and screening procedures and development of a vaccine, which can address all these issues including beneficial aspects of H. pylori. The literature pertaining to different aspects of…

Helicobacter cinaedi was first isolated from rectal cultures from homosexual men in 1984. In the 1980s to mid 1990s, the microorganism was mainly isolated from samples from homosexual men or immunocompromised patients; however, during the last two decades, H. cinaedi has been isolated from immunocompromised and from immunocompetent individuals worldwide. In Japan, the isolation of this microorganism was first reported in 2003. Since then, many cases have been reported in hospitals across the country. Despite many reports, the etiological properties and pathogenicity of H. cinaedi remain elusiv…

Chronic urticaria is fairly a common disorder in children and management is sometime challenging. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) should be considered as one of the causes for chronic urticaria when the response to conventional treatment is not appropriate. A nine years old girl with suspicion of wheat allergy (celiac disease) and chronic urticaria was referred for endoscopy. Antral nodularity with H. pylori gastritis was observed and confirmed on biopsy specimen with normal small bowel mucosa. Treatment for H. pylori cured her chronic urticaria. H. pylori should be considered as one of the di…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study evaluated the effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on functional dyspepsia (FD), and the relationship between the changes of histological gastritis and FD symptom responses.
METHODS: A total of 213 FD patients diagnosed by Rome III criteria were consecutively enrolled. H. pylori tests and gastritis grade by the Sydney system were performed before and 1 year after the proton pump based-eradication therapy for 7 days. Serum levels of pepsinogen, and genetic polymorphisms IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 were investigated.
RESULTS: Total of 91 patients completed the 1 year …

Helicobacter pylori is cause of chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer and gastric carcinoma in humans. L-proline is a preferred energy source of the microaerophilic bacterium. Previous analyses revealed that HpputP and HpputA, the genes that are predicted to play a central role in proline metabolism as they encode for the proline transporter and proline dehydrogenase, respectively, are essential for stomach colonization. Here, the molecular basis of proline transport in H. pylori by HpPutP was investigated experimentally for the first time. Measuring radiolabeled substrate transport in H. pylori a…

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a major pathogen of chronic atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer. Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are recognized as precancerous lesion of gastric cancer. Many studies reported that H. pylori eradication had the preventive effect of gastric cancer. Moreover many studies mentioned the improvement of gastric atrophy and/or intestinal metaplasia. Two meta-analysis indicated the improvement of atrophic gastritis but not of intestinal metaplasia. In our study, intestinal metaplasia improved at lesser curvature of the corpus si…

BACKGROUND: The optimal duration for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication therapy is controversial, with recommendations ranging from 7 to 14 days. Several systematic reviews have attempted to address this issue but have given conflicting results and limited their analysis to proton pump inhibitor (PPI), two antibiotics (PPI triple) therapy. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the optimal duration of multiple H. pylori eradication regimens.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to assess the relative effectiveness of different durations (7, 10 or 14 days) …

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in Western populations has steadily decreased. This has been suggested as one of the factors involved in the recent increase of asthma and allergy. Some studies have reported a negative association between H. pylori and asthma and allergy, but data are inconsistent and there are a few studies in children.
AIM: We investigated whether the prevalence of H. pylori was associated with asthma symptoms, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis in childhood.
METHODS: We determined IgG anti-H. pylori and CagA antibodies in serum of Dutch children, wh…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although Helicobacter pylori infection has been reported to be more frequent in patients with dyspepsia, whether it should be treated in dyspepsia remains controversial. This study was carried out to compare the histopathological changes in Helicobacter pylori-positive and -negative dyspepsia patients.
METHODS: A total of 461 patients with Helicobacter pylori-positive dyspepsia seen in our institution were enrolled in the study. The control group was formed from 100 Helicobacter pylori-negative dyspepsia patients. Subjects underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and bi…

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human gastric epithelium and induces chronic gastritis, which can lead to gastric cancer. Through cell-cell contacts the gastric epithelium forms a barrier to protect underlying tissue from pathogenic bacteria; however, H. pylori have evolved numerous strategies to perturb the integrity of the gastric barrier. In this review, we summarize recent research into the mechanisms through which H. pylori disrupts intercellular junctions and disrupts the gastric epithelial barrier.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative bacterium which is responsible for a wide range of disorders of the stomach, from chronic gastritis to peptic ulcers to gastric cancer which, however, occurs in a lower percentage of subjects. The difference in the clinical course of infection seems to be correlated both to the typical pathogenicity of the bacterium and to factors related to the host. The reasons underlying these observations include differences in bacterial pathogenicity as well as in host susceptibility. Numerous studies published in the last year have provided new insights …

We conducted a prospective study to investigate the possibility of Helicobacter pylori colonization on tonsillar and adenoid tissues. Our study group was made up of 84 consecutively presenting children aged 4 to 12 years who had undergone adenotonsillectomy or adenoidectomy with or without ventilation tube insertion. The excised specimens were analyzed by rapid urease testing and histopathologic examination to detect H pylori. Histologic sections were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining and Giemsa staining as performed in routine gastric biopsies. We found no H pylori colonization in a…

Microbial pathogens contribute to the development of more than 1 million cases of cancer per year. Gastric adenocarcinoma is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the world, and gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori is the strongest known risk factor for this malignancy. H. pylori colonizes the stomach for years, not days or weeks, as is usually the case for bacterial pathogens and it always induces inflammation; however, only a fraction of colonized individuals ever develop disease. Identification of mechanisms through which H. pylori co-opts host defenses to facilitate its o…

Recently, the incidence of gastric ulcer in Japanese elderly people has been increasing and the number of deaths associated with gastric ulcer has not decreased. Helicobacter pylori infection rates in elderly patients with gastric ulcer are lower than those in non-elderly patients. NSAIDs including aspirin and many other factors influence the development of gastric ulcer. Gastric ulcers occur in the upper part of the stomach and often bleed. In addition, elderly patients tend to have no abdominal symptoms other than bleeding. According to guidelines, endoscopic hemostasis is performed in cases…
