Lagochilascariosis in Brazil: A systematic search and descriptive review, and the first report of Lagochilascaris minor Leiper, 1909 infection in a domestic cat from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

Lagochilascariosis is a rare and neglected zoonotic helminthiasis caused by Lagochilascaris spp., in which domestic and wild carnivores and humans act as definitive hosts. Among the six described species, Lagochilascaris minor is the only one known to infect humans. Clinically, the disease is characterized by nodular lesions, mainly in the cervical region, often associated with purulent exudate, and it occurs throughout the Neotropical region. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of lagochilascariosis in animals and humans and to report the first case of L. minor infection in a dome…

Neglected Tropical Diseases Elimination in the Philippines: Challenges and Gaps.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as soil-transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, leprosy, rabies, and food-borne trematodiasis are endemic in the Philippines. Despite global and national elimination efforts, these six NTDs remain a persistent burden to the poor, those living in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), and other vulnerable groups. This narrative review synthesized data from Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) reports of the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) from 2020 to 2024, the available literature from electro…

Variability of interobserver interpretation of selected helminth ova in the development of a training image set.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis for surveillance relies on microscopic detection of ova in Kato-Katz (KK) prepared slides. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based platforms for parasitic eggs may be developed using a robust image set with defined labels by reference microscopists. This study aimed to determine interobserver variability among reference microscopists in identifying parasite ova. METHODS: Images of parasite ova taken from KK prepared slides were labelled according to species by two reference microscopists (M1 and M2). A third reference micr…

Effectiveness of Strongyloides Recombinant IgG Immunoreactive Antigen in Detecting IgG and IgG4 Subclass Antibodies for Diagnosis of Human Strongyloidiasis Using Rapid Immunochromatographic Tests.

Human strongyloidiasis is an important soil-transmitted helminthiasis that affects millions worldwide and can develop into fatal systemic strongyloidiasis in immunosuppressed patients. We have developed two new rapid and simple-to-use immunochromatographic test (ICT) kits for rapid serodiagnosis that support stool examination for clinical diagnosis. Strongyloides stercoralis recombinant IgG immunoreactive antigen (GenBank: AAB97359.1; rSsIR-based ICT kit) was used for detection of IgG and IgG4 antibodies. The diagnostic efficacy of both kits was evaluated using human serum samples from strongy…

Proteomic analysis of Trichinella spiralis muscle larval excretory-secretory proteins recognized by early infection sera.

Although the excretory-secretory (ES) proteins of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae are the most commonly used diagnostic antigens for trichinellosis, their main disadvantage is the false negative results during the early stage of infection and cross-reaction of their main components (43, 45, 49, and 53 kDa) with sera of patients with other helminthiasis. The aim of this study was to identify early specific diagnostic antigens in T. spiralis ES proteins with 30-40 kDa. The ES proteins were analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), and a total of approximately 150 proteins spots were…

Advances in molecular identification, taxonomy, genetic variation and diagnosis of Toxocara spp.

The genus Toxocara contains parasitic nematodes of human and animal health significance, such as Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Toxocara vitulorum. T. canis and T. cati are among the most prevalent parasites of dogs and cats with a worldwide distribution. Human infection with T. canis and T. cati, which can cause a number of clinical manifestations such as visceral larva migrans (VLMs), ocular larva migrans (OLMs), eosinophilic meningoencephalitis (EME), covert toxocariasis (CT) and neurotoxocariasis, is considered the most prevalent neglected helminthiasis in industrialized countries. The …

Strongyloides stercoralis: a field-based survey of mothers and their preschool children using ELISA, Baermann and Koga plate methods reveals low endemicity in western Uganda.

To ascertain the current status of strongyloidiasis in mothers and their preschool children, a field-based survey was conducted in western Uganda using a combination of diagnostic methods: ELISA, Baermann concentration and Koga agar plate. The prevalence of other soil-transmitted helminthiasis and intestinal schistosomiasis were also determined. In total, 158 mothers and 143 children were examined from five villages within Kabale, Hoima and Masindi districts. In mothers and children, the general prevalence of strongyloidiasis inferred by ELISA was approximately 4% and approximately 2%, respect…

Prevalence, intensity and seasonality of gastrointestinal parasites in abattoir horses in Germany.

Prevalence and intensity of gastrointestinal parasites were studied through a longitudinal survey in 400 horses over a 17-month period in an abattoir in Germany. Three hundred and ten horses (77.5 %) were demonstrated harbouring endoparasites either by direct recovery of parasites from the digestive tract and/or in terms of faecal egg counts (strongyles). The following parasites were found (percentage prevalence, range of counts): Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae (2.25 %, 1-154), Gasterophilus nasalis larvae (0.25 %, 44), Trichostrongylus axei (11.0 %, 1-3,620), Habronema majus (8.0 %; 1-422)
