Sexual Orientation and Exposure to Violence Among U.S. Patients Undergoing Abortion.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the characteristics of patients undergoing abortion in the United States according to sexual orientation and exposure to sexual and physical violence. METHODS: Data for this observational study come from the Guttmacher Institute's 2014 Abortion Patient Survey, which obtained information from 8,380 individuals obtaining abortions at nonhospital facilities in the United States; 7,656 of those (91%) provided information on sexual orientation identity. We used simple logistic regression to assess differences between heterosexuals and three sexual minority groups-bisexual, les

Disparities in Body Mass Index Trajectories From Adolescence to Early Adulthood for Sexual Minority Women.

PURPOSE: We aimed to estimate group-based trajectories of body mass index (BMI) in a longitudinal cohort of young women and determine the association between sexual identity and BMI trajectory group, adjusting for obesity risk factors. METHODS: We analyzed data from females in waves I-IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Sexual identity was categorized as heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, bisexual, or lesbian (homosexual/mostly homosexual). We conducted group-based trajectory modeling of BMI with a censored normal distribution and a cubic relationship with age

Substance abuse and mental health disparities: comparisons across sexual identity groups in a national sample of young Australian women.

A growing body of research amply documents health disparities related to substance abuse among sexual minority women. However, relatively little research has examined risk factors or predictors of substance use in this population and even less has explored differences among sexual minority subgroups. Using data from 8850 women aged 25-30 years in the 2003 survey of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health Survey (ALSWH) we compared rates of substance use (alcohol, marijuana and other illicit drugs) and potential predictors (e.g., depression, anxiety, perceived stress, lower levels o

Protective Factors, Risk of Violence and Discrimination and Mental Health Indicators of Young LGB People.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people have more risk of suffering from violence and situations of discrimination than heterosexual people. The current study compares LGB people with heterosexual people in protective factors, violence, health and well-being factors. The sample comprises 609 Spanish people between 14 and 25 years old. We established a cross-sectional design. A survey including questions about sociodemographic information and protective, violence and health and well-being factors was designed ad hoc for this study. The results show that the LGB group (n = 342) is more at risk of

A neglected lesbian health concern: cervical neoplasia.

Many health care providers believe that lesbian women do not need routine Papanicolaou smears. This erroneous assumption fails to recognize that the majority of lesbian women have had prior heterosexual relationships and thus may be at risk for developing cervical neoplasia. The following case report describes a lesbian woman who denied prior heterosexual intercourse but who developed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN 2) associated with a high oncogenic risk human papillomavirus (HPV) type. Sexual contact with multiple lesbian partners who had previous heterosexual relationships

Differences in Prevalence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Diagnosis Across Sexual Orientation in a Longitudinal Cohort of U.S. Adults.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to investigate differences in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) prevalence by sexual orientation among young adults in the United States. METHODS: We used data from the Growing Up Today Study, a longitudinal cohort of young adults (age 23-35 in 2019). Participants assigned female at birth (N = 11,148) reported PCOS diagnoses on questionnaires between 2010 and 2019. We used modified-Poisson regression models to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for PCOS diagnoses, comparing completely heterosexual participants (referent) to sexual minor

Sexual orientation differences in the relationship between victimization and hazardous drinking among women in the National Alcohol Survey.

This study examined relationships between past experiences of victimization (sexual abuse and physical abuse in childhood, sexual abuse and physical abuse in adulthood, and lifetime victimization) and hazardous drinking among sexual minority women compared to exclusively heterosexual women. Data were from 11,169 women responding to sexual identity and sexual behavior questions from three National Alcohol Survey waves: 2000 (n = 3,880), 2005 (n = 3,464), and 2010 (n = 3,825). A hazardous drinking index was constructed from five dichotomous variables (5+ drinking in the past year, drinking two o

Epidemic model of HIV infection and AIDS in Argentina. Status in 1990 and predictive estimates.

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the prevalence of HIV infection and AIDS in Argentina, to study the dynamics of the spread of HIV and to predict the future course by means of an epidemic model. The model was constructed using differential equations to describe the interactions between members of the various groups at risk. The functional form of the solutions was used in a back calculation procedure using data from cohort studies which were done in other countries (U.S.A. and France) together with data of AIDS cases reported to the National AIDS Program, to determine the time evoluti

Clinical course of anogenital warts in men infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Fifty four men with anogenital warts were studied; 22 had concurrent infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The median duration of the warts before and after the start of treatment of seven HIV infected and 10 non-infected heterosexual men was similar. In homosexual men, however, the duration of the lesions in 15 HIV infected patients was greater before and after treatment than in 22 non-HIV infected men. As the median number of CD4+ cells in the peripheral blood was significantly lower in homosexual than heterosexual men infected with HIV, the difference in the course of anoge

Explaining Disparities in Severe Headache and Migraine Among Sexual Minority Adults in the United States, 2013-2018.

Previous work has not examined how the association of sexual orientation and severe headache/migraine may be explained by differences between sexual minorities and heterosexuals in sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. Using data from the 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey, regression decomposition was used to identify determinants of disparities in headache/migraine between sexual minorities collectively and heterosexuals, as well as between bisexual men and gay men, and bisexual women and lesbians. The prevalence of headache/migraine was the highest among bisexual wome

Mental health service use by African American women: exploration of subpopulation differences.

Studies focusing on mental health service use have consistently viewed African American women as a homogeneous population, and very few studies have examined subgroup differences. However, important differences exist both within and between groups in lifestyle, stressors, type and availability of support resources, societal interactions, and risk-taking behaviors. This study examined rates and patterns of mental health service use by African American lesbian women and a matched sample of heterosexual women. Results suggest both similarities and differences in factors associated with use of ser

Cognitive Emotion Regulation as a Mediator of Trait Anxiety and Relational Aggression in Romantic Relationships of Heteronormative Individuals and Members of the LGBTQI Community.

This study aims to examine the link of trait anxiety on relational aggression, with the presence of cognitive emotion regulation as a moderator. We measure the anxiety as a trait as a predictor for displaying aggressive behaviours. Moreover, the influence of individual maladaptive strategies was assessed using the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire on the level of relational aggression. The study involved 169 participants; in terms of sexual orientation, the respondents were divided nearly equally: heterosexual (n = 85), and LGBTQI group (n = 84). The data were collected through online

Sexual orientation moderates the association between health care utilization-related factors and mental health service nonutilization among United States military veterans.

This study examined mental health treatment nonutilization among sexual minority versus heterosexual Veterans with demonstrated psychiatric need. Data were analyzed from 820 Veterans with psychiatric need who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of U.S. military Veterans. Results revealed that current mental health service nonutilization did not differ between sexual minority versus heterosexual Veterans (70.5% vs. 74.0%). Significant interactions between sexual orientation and sex assigned at birth, primary sou

Relationship between sexual orientation and psychotic experiences in the general population in England.

BACKGROUND: Non-heterosexual individuals are at high risk for a variety of factors associated with the emergence of psychotic experiences (PEs) (e.g. common mental disorders, substance use, and stress). However, there is a scarcity of data on the association between sexual orientation and PEs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the sexual orientation-PE relationship, and to identify potential mediators in this relationship. METHODS: This study used nationally representative cross-sectional data from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey. Sexual orientation was dichotomized
