In this article, recent literature is reviewed with regard to possible hormonal influences on susceptibility to melanoma and prognosis once melanoma is developed. At the present time, there is little data to suggest that melanoma and pregnancy interact as far as prognosis is concerned for patients with stage 1 and stage 2 disease. Recent data have provided further reassurance that oral contraceptives are safe for patients who have had melanoma, and more data is required before a definitive statement can be made regarding hormone replacement therapy for women who have had stage 1 or 2 melanoma

The effect of thyroid hormones on lipoprotein(a) plasma concentrations and the other parameters of lipoprotein metabolism was studied in 158 patients with thyroid dysfunction and in 37 euthyroid controls (cross-sectional study). Multiple regression analysis revealed that 65.5% of the variability in lipoprotein(a) levels were predicted by changes in lipoprotein(a) phenotypes (60.5%), thyrotropin (3.5%), and age (0.8%). Controversy exists whether carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) is valuable as a screening tool for fetal alcohol syndrome. We evaluated serum CDT in 60 non-alcohol-abusing women at different stages of normal pregnancy. CDT was weakly related to week of pregnancy and to human placental lactogen. CDT did not correlate with iron oestradiol or progesterone. By contrast, good correlations were found between transferrin and week of pregnancy or either sex hormone. In order to explore the mechanism of secondary gastric acid hypersecretion after Roux-en-Y Cholangio-jejunostomy (CJR-Y), we studied the changes of gastric acid secretion and determined the levels of somatostatin (SS), gastrin (Gn), neurotensin (NT), beta-endorphin (beta-EP) in serum, gastric juice and pyloric antrum in patients with CJR-Y.
