BACKGROUND: In idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), optimal valve pressure selection is critical. While indicators have been reported for ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) and lumboperitoneal shunts (LPS), no peer-reviewed publications have reported on ventriculoatrial shunts (VAS).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 54 iNPH patients treated using a SPVA-140 valve without antisiphon device between 2010 and 2017. Clinical outcomes (modified Rankin scale, iNPH grading scale), valve pressures, and complications were assessed. Optimal pressure was defined as the setting associated w

OBJECTIVE: Complication rate of shunting for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) has significantly improved over the last decades. Especially the use of overdrainage protection has reduced the incidence of subdural hematoma and collections. However, gravitational valves were associated with other complications of shunt dysfunction. We present our 17 years of experience with patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus who changed from a differential pressure valve to a gravitational valve system.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified all patients with the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocep

The intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is a common procedure in neuro-intensive care for pathologies such traumatic brain injuries or hemorrhages, but also for chronic ones as the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). The only available treatment for NPH is the surgical implantation of a shunt with the aim of routing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) away from the brain to another part of the body. In this study, using the classification software WEKA, an intensive investigation of ICP signals has been conducted. In particular we studied 14 ICP recordings of different patients who underwent an infu

BACKGROUND: It was previously reported that the intracranial pulse pressure amplitudes were elevated in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients responding to shunt surgery. In this study, pulse pressure amplitudes were determined in all patients referred for tentative iNPH, and patients were selected for shunt surgery based on the determination of their threshold levels of intracranial pulse pressure amplitudes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients referred to our department for tentative iNPH during a 12 months time period were included. Using intracranial pressure (ICP) monit

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that the intracranial pulse pressure amplitudes were elevated in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) patients responding to shunt surgery. Whether or not shunt implantation or adjustment of the shunt valve opening pressure modifies the intracranial pulse pressure amplitudes in NPH patients remains to be established. This report summarises our observations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with NPH (idiopathic in nine and secondary in four) are presented in whom continuous intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring was done before and after

Background/Objectives: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a treatable cause of gait impairment and fall risk in older adults, yet it remains frequently underdiagnosed. This study aimed to validate an automated measurement of the callosal angle, a recognized imaging marker of NPH, adapted for use on routine head computed tomography (CT). Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 198 patients with probable NPH, confirmed by gait improvement following lumbar tap test, and 198 age- and sex-matched controls presenting with headache and negative head CT findings (mean age 74 ± 7 years; 6

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible neurological disorder characterized by gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence; however, its diagnosis and prediction of shunt responsiveness remain challenging. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic biomarkers in iNPH and to identify molecular patterns with diagnostic and prognostic relevance. A PRISMA-guided search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar identified 14 eligible studies comprising 1171 iNPH patients. Proteomic a

Brain computed tomography (CT) is an accessible and commonly utilized technique for assessing brain structure. In cases of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), the presence of ventriculomegaly is often neuroradiologically evaluated by visual rating and manual measurement of each image. Previously, we have developed a deep-learning-model that utilizes transfer learning from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for CT-based intracranial tissue segmentation. Accordingly, herein we aimed to enhance the segmentation of ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (VCSF) in brain CT scans and assess the

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by normal intracranial pressure, ventriculomegaly, gait disturbances, cognitive impairment, and urinary dysfunction, with an unknown etiology and predominantly affecting elderly populations. iNPH frequently coexists with Alzheimer disease (AD), and differentiating dementia-subtype iNPH from AD remains clinically challenging. In this review, we demonstrate that cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers may aid differential diagnosis, correlate with cognitive impairment, and predict shunt surgery outcomes.

Background/Objectives: Idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible neurological disorder characterized by gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence. Its pathophysiology involves impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption, and recent research has highlighted the role of the glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic systems in this process. However, the factors that trigger the clinical manifestations of iNPH in subclinical cases remain poorly understood. Case Presentation: Herein, we report two rare cases of iNPH in which clinical symptoms only

This study investigated Theory of Mind (ToM) deficits in patients with suspected idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a condition affecting motor, cognitive and autonomic functions. Given the overlap between ToM-related neural networks and those affected in iNPH, we examined whether ToM impairments are a feature of the disease. Thirty-eight patients with possible/probable iNPH and 25 healthy controls completed the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) along with typically administered neuropsychological tests in this population. Group differences were analysed while controlling

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE : Phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) represents an opportunity to non-invasively investigate cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Studies in recent years have explored the diagnostic and prognostic value of PC-MRI derived parameters. This review aims to identify all PC-MRI studies of iNPH published since 2010, synthesise a review based on collated results, and analyse specific flow parameters identified in the selected studies.
METHODS: Our protocol was prospectively registered on PROSPERO [CRD4

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is highly prevalent among elderly individuals, and there is a strong correlation between telomere length and biological aging. However, there is limited evidence to elucidate the relationship between telomere length and iNPH. This study aimed to investigate the associations between telomere length and iNPH using the Mendelian randomization (MR) method.
METHODS: The genetic variants of telomere length were obtained from 472,174 UK Biobank individuals. Summary level data of iNPH were acquired from 218,365 individuals of the FinnGen cons

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus is a disorder of unknown pathophysiology whose diagnosis is paradoxically made by a positive response to its proposed treatment with cerebrospinal fluid diversion. There are currently no idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus disease genes or biomarkers. A systematic analysis of familial idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus could aid in clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment stratification, and elucidate disease patho-etiology. In this 2-part analysis, we review literature-based evidence for inheritance of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocep
