Irrigation-mediated transfer of geogenic manganese to paddy soils and rice grain in a mine-influenced catchment: a screening-level dietary exposure assessment.

Manganese (Mn) contamination in agricultural systems is usually attributed to mining or industrial sources, but hydrologically connected catchments can transfer geogenic Mn to staple crops through irrigation. This study characterized Mn transfer from a mine-influenced, recently disturbed upland to irrigation water, stream sediment, paddy soils, rice tissues, and screening-level dietary exposure in a semi-enclosed catchment in Ilgwang, Busan, South Korea. Surface water and stream sediment were monitored over four agricultural periods in 2021, and paddy soils and rice were sampled from four sequ

Evolving behavioral dynamics and environmental risk in cholera epidemics.

Cholera, an infectious disease transmitted by water, is a harmful and sometimes life-threatening public health issue in a significant number of poor and middle-income nations all over the world, where inadequate water and sanitation infrastructure, together with noticeable climate variability, contribute to regular and frequently severe outbreaks. Consequently, it is important to understand the interplay between environmental risks and human decision-making in exacerbating the disease burden in our society. This work develops and analyzes a seasonally driven cholera model that integrates with

Adapt water reserves to climate change: study case Romania.

At the regional level, hydrological factors, catchment properties, as well as the way water reserves are utilized, represent major determining factors of the reactions of lake ecosystems to climate change (CC). In this context, lakes also have a negative impact related to the large amounts of water they can consume through evaporation. This paper quantifies the effects of a small artificial lake-Dridu from Romania (with complex usage) on the environment in the context of CC, estimating the blue water footprint (WF) and carbon footprint (CF) under different use scenarios. Thus, an analysis of t

Impact of Paleoclimatic Variability on Shale Oil Enrichment in Deep to Semi-Deep Lacustrine Facies: A Case Study of the Second Member of the Funing Formation, Qintong Depression, Subei Basin, Eastern China.

Lacustrine depositional systems are more sensitive to climatic fluctuations than marine systems, producing significant stratigraphic and sedimentological heterogeneity that affects shale oil distribution. However, the mechanisms linking paleoclimatic variability to shale oil enrichment remain insufficiently constrained. This study investigates the coupling between hydrological variations, organic matter enrichment, and pore structure development under different climatic conditions in the Second Member of the Funing Formation from Well A1 in the Qintong Depression. Using a combination of total

Co-inoculation of Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum mitigates the deleterious effects of waterlogging in soybean plants in a scenario of enhanced atmospheric CO2.

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations directly influence photosynthesis and productivity in C3 plants, contributing to global warming and altering hydrological cycles, which in turn increase extreme rainfall events. Soybean, a waterlogging-sensitive crop, exhibits marked yield reductions under such conditions. Legumes establish symbioses with diazotrophic bacteria and are increasingly co-inoculated with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) to enhance stress resilience. While elevated CO2 (e[CO2]) and PGPB generally stimulate photosynthesis and growth, waterlogging often counteracts these ben

Modelling the future climate impacts on hydraulic infrastructure development in tropical (peri-)urban region: Case of Kigali, Rwanda.

The current global climate has shown a significant change, mostly resulting from human-induced activities. Frequent experiences of extreme rainstorms, deadly landslides, and floods followed by the destruction of roads, bridges, drainage, buildings, agriculture, and other infrastructures have been appearing across the globe along with extensive socio-economic effects including human lives losses whereby tropical Africa is among the greatly affected regions. Several studies in the region acclaim the increase of climate-related extremes due to a gradual climate variation. Hence, this study aimed

Isotope-based source assessment of water flowing from storm sewer systems to a receiving river during dry weather periods.

Urban stormwater management systems, particularly storm sewers, are critical for managing runoff in urban areas. These systems are designed to function during wet weather events; however, field-based observations of these systems suggest that they may also be active flow pathways in dry weather conditions, ultimately contributing to streamflow. Unlike dry weather flow in wastewater systems, storm sewer dry weather flow has not been thoroughly explored. This research used stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in water to examine the sources of dry weather flow from storm sewers in a highly urb

Soil-derived dissolved organic matter and nutrient sources from urban stormwater control measures.

There has been significant investment in stormwater control measures (SCM) to reduce erosion, filter pollutants, and mitigate peak storm flows within urban watersheds. SCMs have variable hydrologic connectivity to downstream waterbodies where SCMs may rapidly export water during storm events but dry up in-between events and these alternating wet/dry cycles influence the biogeochemical processes that occur in SCM soils. While the performance of SCMs has been evaluated for nutrient removal, less is known about the potential for mobilization of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) that ac

Holed up, but thriving: Impact of multitrophic cryoconite communities on glacier elemental cycles.

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima

Evaluating the response of current biotic indices and functional metrics to natural and anthropogenic predictors in disconnected pools of temporary rivers.

Temporary rivers, forming the majority of river networks worldwide, are key biodiversity hotspots. Despite their great value for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, they are often neglected in biomonitoring programs due to several challenges, such as their variable hydromorphology and the difficulty of establishing reference conditions given their dynamic nature, resulting in highly variable communities. Disconnected pools often form in temporary rivers when flow ceases, providing refuge for aquatic taxa. Given their importance for biodiversity conservation, revising and adapti

Hydrochemical systematics and isotope (δ18O, δD and 3H) variations of aquifer system of southern Bengal Basin: implications for groundwater pollution.

Hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic traits of the groundwater in the Quaternary aquifer system in an urban-periurban locality within and encircling the Kolkata-Howrah twin city in the south Bengal Basin have been synthesised to explain the present- and paleo-hydrological processes, surface and groundwater interaction and mixing dynamics of contamination of groundwater. Rock-weathering, evaporation, ion-exchange and active mineral dissolution are the key processes commanding the groundwater chemistry. Freshwater flushing from the recharge zones had thinned the entrapped sea water which

A closed-loop analysis approach for ensuring stormwater source control design solution to achieve the intended goals.

Stormwater source controls have been adopted worldwide to address hydrological and environmental impairments caused by the spread of impervious surfaces in cities. Current design method in China uses 30-year daily rainfall records to generate relationship of rainfall volume capture ratio (αg) and daily design storm, and then uses design storm to propose design solution. However, source control performance differs from rain to rain, and hence the design solution's actual effect may deviate from αg. Borrowing closed-loop feedback concept from business domain, this study proposes closed-loop anal

Identifying driving hydrogeomorphic factors of coastal wetland downgrading using random forest classification models.

Coastal wetlands provide critical ecosystem services but are experiencing disruptions caused by inundation and saltwater intrusion under intensified climate change, sea-level rise, and anthropogenic activities. Recent studies have shown that these disturbances downgraded coastal wetlands mainly through affecting their hydrological processes. However, research on what is the most critical driver for wetland downgrading and how it affects coastal wetlands is still in its infancy. This study examined drivers of three types of wetland downgrading, including woody wetland loss, emergent herbaceous

Body condition as a descriptor of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) health status in the Greater Everglades, Florida, United States.

Body condition is used as an indicator of the degree of body fat in an animal but evidence of its actual relationship with health diagnostics (e.g., blood parameters) is usually lacking across species. In American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), body condition has been used as a performance metric within the Greater Everglades ecosystem to provide insight on hydrological and landscape changes on alligator populations. However, there is no clear evidence that spatial body condition changes relate to different health conditions (low food intake vs sickness) and whether this link can be

Urbanization-induced land use/land cover change and its impact on surface temperature and heat fluxes over two major cities in Western Ethiopia.

Much of the urbanization that occurs in Africa creates the potential for technological development and economic growth but is also a breeding ground for environmental and health problems. This study was undertaken to evaluate the urban-induced land use/land cover (LULC) change and its contribution to the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat fluxes from 2001 to 2021. More specifically, the study analyzed different scenarios of LULC change and retrieved the LST to evaluate the trends of the urban heat flux (UHI) in response to the urban-induced LULC change. The analysis of LULC change f

Vegetation expansion in the subnival Hindu Kush Himalaya.

The mountain systems of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) are changing rapidly due to climatic change, but an overlooked component is the subnival ecosystem (between the treeline and snow line), characterized by short-stature plants and seasonal snow. Basic information about subnival vegetation distribution and rates of ecosystem change are not known, yet such information is needed to understand relationships between subnival ecology and water/carbon cycles. We show that HKH subnival ecosystems cover five to 15 times the area of permanent glaciers and snow, highlighting their eco-hydrological impo

Modelling the interplay of future changes and wastewater management measures on the microbiological river water quality considering safe drinking water production.

Rivers are important for drinking water supply worldwide. However, they are often impacted by pathogen discharges via wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and combined sewer overflows (CSO). To date, accurate predictions of the effects of future changes and pollution control measures on the microbiological water quality of rivers considering safe drinking water production are hindered due to the uncertainty of the pathogen source and transport variables. The aim of this study was to test an integrative approach for an improved understanding of these effects, i.e. climate change and population gr

Wetland characteristics linked to broad-scale patterns in Culiseta melanura abundance and eastern equine encephalitis virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an expanding mosquito-borne threat to humans and domestic animal populations in the northeastern United States. Outbreaks of EEEV are challenging to predict due to spatial and temporal uncertainty in the abundance and viral infection of Cs. melanura, the principal enzootic vector. EEEV activity may be closely linked to wetlands because they provide essential habitat for mosquito vectors and avian reservoir hosts. However, wetlands are not homogeneous and can vary by vegetation, connectivity, size, and inundation patterns. Wetlands may als

Water acidification trends in a reservoir of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain).

Scarcity of waters is the main limiting factor of economic development in most arid and semi-arid regions worldwide. The construction of reservoirs may be an optimal solution to assure water availability if the drainage area shows low disturbances. This is the quandary of mining areas where economic development relies on water accessibility. Water acidification trends were investigated in the Sancho Reservoir (SW Spain) in the last 20 years. The acidity (pH3-5) and high dissolved metal concentrations (e.g., 4.4 mg/L of Al, 2.1mg/L of Mn, 1.9 mg/L of Zn) observed in the Sancho, together with th
