Larvae of parasitoid wasps develop on a single arthropod host, and often face resource limitation that induces a tradeoff between egg maturation and somatic growth. Part of the variation in the growth-reproduction allocation was shown to be heritable, but how the larval developmental environment affects this allocation is not well-known. Detection of life history tradeoffs is often facilitated under stress conditions. We therefore exposed developing female larvae of the polyembryonic parasitoid Copidosoma koehleri (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) to laboratory manipulations aimed to restrict host res

A preliminary study was carried out on the insect fauna of Al-Baha Province, south-western part of Saudi Arabia. A total number of 582 species and subspecies (few identified only to the genus level) belonging to 129 families and representing 17 orders were recorded. Two of these species are described as new, namely: Monomorium sarawatensis Sharaf & Aldawood, sp. n. [Formicidae, Hymenoptera] and Anthrax alruqibi El-Hawagry sp. n. [Bombyliidae, Diptera]. Another eight species are recorded for the first time in Saudi Arabia, namely: Xiphoceriana arabica (Uvarov, 1922) [Pamphagidae, Orthoptera], P

INTRODUCTION: Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is the most effective treatment approach for preventing severe systemic reactions caused by hymenoptera stings. In some cases, the detection of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) positivity for both honeybee and wasp venoms can create diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Immulite 2000 3g Allergy component-based diagnostic test (CBDT) in determining true sensitization in patients with dual venom positivity who were scheduled for VIT.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 66 patients who presented

The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats resulting from conversion to production land uses are among the main drivers of biodiversity loss and increase the proportion of habitat edges. These edges drive edge effects, which are ecological and physical changes in response to distance to habitat edges. Habitat edges between natural and production land affect ecological patterns and processes, including the networks of species interactions on either side of the edge. Because food webs depict both the composition of the community and the feeding links, which represent a measure of energy flow

Pollination services provided by insects are fundamental to the productivity and quality of sweet cherry orchards. This study investigated the flower-visiting insect community and compared the pollination potential of A. mellifera and A. cerana in a sweet cherry orchard on the Loess Plateau of eastern Gansu, China. Field surveys were conducted during the blooming periods of 2025 and 2026. Visual observation and video recording documented flower-visiting insects across five daily time intervals. Foraging behavior, including flower-handling time and inter-visit interval, was measured in both bee

The solitary egg endoparasitoid, Anastatus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae), holds substantial potential for effectively controlling hemipterous and lepidopterous pests. The present study endeavors to elucidate the courtship and mating behavior of this parasitoid, as a comprehensive understanding of female and male mating status and its implications on offspring production remains inadequately documented. Courtship and mating behavior process impacted by food, age, host, body size, virgin and mated both sexes were monitored by direct observation, while fecundity and female proportion of vir

The strawberry blossom weevil, Anthonomus rubi (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, and has recently established in British Columbia, Canada and Washington State, USA. To determine whether any parasitoids in British Columbia parasitize this recently-established pest, A. rubi-infested buds of Rosaceous host plants were collected and reared for parasitoid emergence. Pteromalus quadridentatus Gibson n. sp. (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) is described from both sexes reared as solitary ectoparasitoids of A. rubi. Males and females ar

Spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), is an invasive vinegar fly that is a major threat to the small fruits industries globally. Insect capa genes encode multiple neuropeptides, including CAPA-periviscerokinin (CAPA-PVK) peptides, that are specifically known to cause diuresis or anti-diuresis in various organisms. Here we identified and characterized a corresponding G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) of the D. suzukii CAPA-PVK peptides: CAPA receptor (CAPA-R). To better characterize the behavior of D. suzukii CAPA-R, we used insect cell-based functional expression assays to e

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis occurs in up to 3.5% of hymenoptera stings and can be a life-threatening emergency. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) provides excellent protection from further episodes of anaphylaxis and is well tolerated. In this study the frequency of anaphylactic reactions in pediatric patients undergoing rush bee venom immunotherapy was assessed as well as possible risk factors and modified up-dosing schemes are reported.
METHODS: 19 consecutive pediatric patients, who had previously experienced an anaphylactic reaction following a bee sting and showed IgE-mediated sensitization to bee v

There are many native species of animals with the potential to cause severe disease in Portugal. Of the four clinically relevant snake species, the vipers (Vipera latastei and Vipera seoanei) are the most concerning. They can cause severe disease and require in-hospital management, monitoring and specific treatment, including the administration of anti-snake venom serum. The Malpolon monspessulanus and Macroprotodon brevis snakes cause mostly localized clinical manifestations, which do not require specific treatment. Only a minority of the spider species in Portugal possess chelicerae (mouthpa

BACKGROUND: Venoms and the toxins they contain represent molecular adaptations that have evolved on numerous occasions throughout the animal kingdom. However, the processes that shape venom protein evolution are poorly understood because of the scarcity of whole-genome data available for comparative analyses of venomous species.
RESULTS: We performed a broad comparative toxicogenomic analysis to gain insight into the genomic mechanisms of venom evolution in robber flies (Asilidae). We first sequenced a high-quality draft genome of the hymenopteran hunting robber fly Dasypogon diadema, analyse

BACKGROUND: Parasitoid wasps are well-known natural enemies of major agricultural pests and arthropod borne diseases. The parasitoid wasp Macrocentrus cingulum (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) has been widely used to control the notorious insect pests Ostrinia furnacalis (Asian Corn Borer) and O. nubilalis (European corn borer). One striking phenomenon exhibited by M. cingulum is polyembryony, the formation of multiple genetically identical offspring from a single zygote. Moreover, M. cingulum employs a passive parasitic strategy by preventing the host's immune system from recognizing the embryo as a

Parasites often induce behavioural changes in their host. However, it is not necessarily easy to determine whether these changes are representative of an adaptation of the parasite (parasite manipulation), an adaptive response of the host or a side-effect of infection. In a solitary parasitoid of Drosophila larvae (Leptopilina boulardi), viral particles (LbFV) modify the host acceptance behaviour of infected females by increasing their tendency to superparasitize. This behavioural alteration allows for the horizontal transmission of the virus within superparasitized Drosophila larvae. To add s

IgE antibody concentration, affinity, clonality and specific activity (also known as the allergen-specific IgE to total IgE ratio) influence the translation of IgE responses into clinically evident allergic symptoms following allergen exposure. Reported IgE-specific activity levels >3-4% place allergic individuals undergoing anti-IgE (Omalizumab((R))) therapy at a disadvantage for poor resolution of their allergy symptoms following manufacturer's recommended dosing schemes. We investigated the hypothesis that the specific activity of the IgE antibody response is highly variable with respect to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A variety of unusual or unexpected reactions have occurred in a temporal relationship to insect stings. This review will summarize these case history reports in recent years. As these reactions are very infrequent, the review will also include prior reported unusual reactions attributed to insect stings.
RECENT FINDINGS: Acute encephalopathy occurred 8 days after yellow jacket stings, without any other obvious cause. There have been prior reports of other neurological reactions, myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome related to insect stings. Acu

Ants belong to the family Formicidae of the order Hymenoptera and they are one of the world's dominant insect groups. Ants can be present at all stages of carrion decomposition as they are typically observed shortly after death or during the early postmortem period, but even later once the fly maggots had left the body. Their role in the faunal succession varies from predator on the eggs and larvae of other insects (mainly Diptera), thus reducing significantly the rate of decomposition, to scavenger on the flesh or exudates from the corpse itself. As they can deeply affect the occurrence of ca

BACKGROUND: Two strains of the endoparasitoid Cotesia typhae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) present a differential parasitism success on the host, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). One is virulent on both permissive and resistant host populations, and the other only on the permissive host. This interaction provides a very interesting frame for studying virulence factors. Here, we used a combination of comparative transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to unravel the molecular basis underlying virulence differences between the strains.
RESULTS: First, we report that virulence genes are

BACKGROUND: Systemic reactions and anaphylaxis due to Hymenoptera venoms occur in up to 7.5% of the European population. Fatal sting reactions are very rare. Serum tryptase levels should be measured in all patients with a history of severe reactions in order to detect mastocytosis and to determine the risk of severe reactions to venom immunotherapy (VIT). The risk to experience severe or even fatal anaphylaxis due to insect stings is quite high in patients with mastocytosis. Therefore, lifelong VIT is recommended in these highly threatened patients. Parasitism by the endophagous braconid Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) has a negative impact on the reproductive activity of its host, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Homoptera, Aphididae). The host castration is induced by the parasitoid venom and is reproduced by the injection of chromatographic fractions highly enriched with two proteins, of 18 (p18) and 36 kDa (p36) in size, respectively. Here we demonstrate that these bioactive proteins trigger apoptosis of the cells in the germaria and ovariole sheath of the host aphid. Both p18 and p36 were internally sequenced and the gathered information
