Hyperuricemia as a Predictive Marker for Progression of Nephrosclerosis: Clinical Assessment of Prognostic Factors in Biopsy-Proven Arterial/Arteriolar Nephrosclerosis.

AIM: The influence of serum urate on kidney disease is attracting attention, but the effects of uric acid (UA) on nephrosclerosis have not been elucidated. METHODS: We reviewed data from 45 patients diagnosed with arterial/arteriolar nephrosclerosis. The renal outcomes of the arterial/arteriolar nephrosclerosis patients were assessed by performing logistic and Cox regression analyses. A Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to evaluate the impact of hyperuricemia (HU) on kidney survival. The renal outcomes of patients with and without HU were compared by using a propensity score-matched cohort. RES…

Complete destruction of both femoral heads following idiopathic necrosis of the femoral heads in a diabetic patient with hyperuricemia and hyperlipoproteinemia.

A practically complete destruction of both femoral heads including the femoral necks and acetabula was encountered in a 69-year-old patient with diabetes, which varied in intensity. This destruction, documented by radiographs which had been taken 8 years prior, had started as the typical picture of "idiopathic femoral head necrosis". In addition to diabetes, hyperuricemia and hyperlipoproteinemia were present at the time when the femoral head necrosis was first evidenced. One episode of gout was recorded. In recent years, following therapy, the hyperurecemia and hyperlipoproteinemia had normal…

The combination of Anoectochilus roxburghii and Danggui-Niantong decoction ameliorates hyperuricemia by regulating NAD+ metabolism and urate transport in rats.

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricemia (HUA) involves multi-organ dysfunction, particularly hepatic and renal abnormalities. Danggui-Niantong decoction (DGN) is a traditional formula for gout and chronic kidney disease. Clinically, DGN is often combined with drugs that regulate hepatic function to treat HUA. Anoectochilus roxburghii (AR) is recognized for its hepatoprotective properties. However, whether the AR and DGN combination (AR+DGN) exerts superior urate-lowering and organ-protective effects compared to monotherapy, and the mechanisms underlying this combined treatment, remain unclear. PURPOSE: Thi…

Evaluation of the clinical efficacy of Xanthoceras sorbifolium leaves in intervening in hyperuricemia and research on its uric acid-lowering mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricemia is a metabolic disorder caused by the malfunction of uric acid metabolism. It is a common risk factor for gout and kidney disease. Currently, first-line pharmacotherapies for hyperuricemia, such as xanthine oxidase inhibitors (e.g., allopurinol and febuxostat) and uricosuric agents (e.g., benzbromarone), effectively lower serum uric acid levels. However, their clinical use is often limited by adverse effects, including hepatorenal toxicity, gastrointestinal disturbances, and hypersensitivity reactions. These limitations highlight the need for safer, better-tolerated t…

MHR Was Associated with Hyperuricemia Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Mediating Effect of Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: The monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) reflects systemic inflammation, combining the pro-inflammatory role of monocytes with the anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory properties of HDL-cholesterol. Prior studies have established MHR as an independent predictor of hyperuricemia (HUA) prevalence. Emerging evidence further identifies MHR as a potential biomarker for early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) screening, likely mediated through its association with insulin resistance. Therefore, our study specifically investigates the relationship between MHR and H…
