The cortical and subcortical correlates of face pareidolia in the macaque brain.

Face detection is a foundational social skill for primates. This vital function is thought to be supported by specialized neural mechanisms; however, although several face-selective regions have been identified in both humans and nonhuman primates, there is no consensus about which region(s) are involved in face detection. Here, we used naturally occurring errors of face detection (i.e. objects with illusory facial features referred to as examples of 'face pareidolia') to identify regions of the macaque brain implicated in face detection. Using whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging

Predicting vection and visually induced motion sickness based on spontaneous postural activity.

Evidence is mounting that differences in postural instability can be used to predict who will experience strong illusory self-motions (vection) and become sick when exposed to global patterns of optical flow (e.g., Apthorp et al., PLoS One 9(12):e113897, 2014; Stoffregen and Smart, Brain Res Bull 47:437-448, 1998). This study compared the predictive ability of traditional and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) based measures of postural activity. We initially measured spontaneous fluctuations in the centre of foot pressure (CoP) of our subjects as they stood quietly with their eyes open

Auditory perceptual restoration and illusory continuity correlates in the human brainstem.

When noise obstructs portions of target sounds the auditory system fills in missing information, a phenomenon known as auditory restoration or induction. Previous work in animal models demonstrates that neurons in primary auditory cortex (A1) are capable of restoring occluded target signals suggesting that early auditory cortex is capable of inducing continuity in discontinuous signals (i.e., endogenous restoration). Current consensus is that the neural correlates of auditory induction and perceptual restoration emerge no earlier than A1. Moreover, the neural mechanisms supporting induction in

Leg length inequality in humans: a new neurophysiological approach.

In conditions where there is moderate or severe pain, such as in low back pain, sciatica and osteoarthritis affecting the hip, the patient often reports the sensation that the two legs are of unequal length. This sensation cannot be explained as a result of fracture or other trauma that might cause a real change in length of the legs. There is confusion as to whether this 'leg length inequality' causes the pain or vice versa. It is argued here that the sensation occurs when there is pressure on the sensory nerves, especially the dorsal spinal roots. This causes pain but, more relevantly, cause

[Relationship between EGG and the dynamic process of motion sickness induced by optokinetic vection].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between Electrogastrography (EGG) and the occurrence of nausea or/and vomit as well as the development of motion sickness (MS) induced by optokinetic stimulation (OPS) and to provide a clue and method for prediction and prevention of MS. METHOD: Twenty male subjects, aged from 18 to 25 years, performed the test only once with the optokinetic drum rotated around a vertical axis at the speed of 60 degrees/s for 15 min. Nausea and EGG signals were observed and recorded. RESULT: (1)Both the increment of tachygastric percentage and the decrement of primar

Hypothalamic and gastric myoelectrical responses during vection-induced nausea in healthy Chinese subjects.

The physiology of nausea, a uniquely human symptom, is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to measure the temporal sequences of neurohormonal responses and gastric myoelectrical activity in healthy subjects during the rotation of an optokinetic drum that produced nausea and other symptoms of motion sickness. Plasma catecholamines, vasopressin, and cortisol were measured at baseline, during minutes 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15 of drum rotation, and after rotation stopped. Electrogastrograms were recorded throughout the study. Twelve subjects (80%) developed nausea and 4-9 cycles/min of gas

Determinants of the perception of sagittal motion.

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head is moved along the line of sight (sagittal motion) as a function of the perceived absolute (egocentric) distance of the object and the perceived motion of the head. To analyze the processes involved, two situations, labeled A and B, were used in four experiments. In Situation A, the observer was stationary and the perceived motion of the object was measured as the object was moved toward and away from the observer. In Situation B, the same visual informati

Amodal representation of occluded surfaces: role of invisible stimuli in apparent motion correspondence.

A series of demonstrations were created where the perceived depth of targets was controlled by stereoscopic disparity. A closer object (a cloud) was made to jump back and forth horizontally, partially occluding a farther object (a full moon). The more distant moon appeared stationary even though the unoccluded portion of it, a crescent, changed position. Reversal of the relative depth of the moon and cloud gave a totally different percept: the crescent appeared to flip back and forth in the front depth plane. Thus, the otherwise-robust apparent motion of the moon crescents was completely aboli

[Visual seizures and benign epilepsy in children with paroxysmal occipital discharges].

The study of ocular symptoms during seizures and of electroencephalograms between seizures in 244 children affected by partial epilepsy has allowed the isolation of nine cases of benign epilepsy with occipital paroxysms. Ocular symptoms as well as other accompanying symptomatology are detailed. The diagnostic procedure should address secondary occipital epilepsy and migraine with ocular symptoms.

[Perverse discourse].

The authors have wanted to study the structure and the characteristics peculiar to the perverse speech, on beauty, enjoyment, claiming to be a knowledge on the other one. We have tried to mark the crucial elements of this speech in the portrait of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde) and in Othello (Shakespeare) in which the perverse's activity of staging is particularly explicit and contributes to substitute a reality for another one.

He also reported unusual symptoms: supernumerary limbs and Alice in Wonderland syndrome. An observational study showed that explaining randomization using gambling-related metaphors and computer-agency descriptions impeded randomized clinical trial recruitment.

OBJECTIVES: To explore how the concept of randomization is described by clinicians and understood by patients in randomized controlled trial … for randomization was rarely mentioned. Recruiters should avoid problematic gambling metaphors and illusions of agency in their explanations and instead focus on clearer descriptions of the rationale and method of randomization to ensure patients are better informed about randomization and RCT participation.

Visual Perception in Anterior Temporal Lobectomy.

PURPOSE: To study visual perception in patients with anterior temporal lobectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We explored some aspects of visual perception and compared the results obtained from 14 control subjects and 14 patients with unilateral anterior temporal lobectomy. Each group included 7 men and 7 women and the same age distribution (patients and controls: age range 27-48 years; mean 37 years). All subjects underwent a conventional ophthalmic examination and were tested for color perception, stereopsis, texture perception, face recognition, and visual illusions. To quantify color, stereos…

This partially invalidates gamblers' illusions and fallacies that they can outperform others or even bankers.
