U-net-based segmentation of foreign bodies and ghost images in panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model for the automatic segmentation of foreign bodies and ghost images in panoramic radiographs (PRs), which can complicate diagnostic interpretation. METHODS: A dataset of 11,226 PRs from four devices was annotated by two radiologists using the Computer Vision Annotation Tool. A U-Net-based CNN model was trained and evaluated using Intersection over Union (IoU), Dice coefficient, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. RESULTS: For foreign body segmentation, the model achieved validation Dice

Double-mix pseudo-label framework: enhancing semi-supervised segmentation on category-imbalanced CT volumes.

PURPOSE: Deep-learning-based supervised CT segmentation relies on fully and densely labeled data, the labeling process of which is time-consuming. In this study, our proposed method aims to improve segmentation performance on CT volumes with limited annotated data by considering category-wise difficulties and distribution. METHODS: We propose a novel confidence-difficulty weight (CDifW) allocation method that considers confidence levels, balancing the training across different categories, influencing the loss function and volume-mixing process for pseudo-label generation. Additionally, we int

Quantification of Interstitial Lung Diseases, From the AJR Special Series on Quantitative Imaging.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) plays an important role in diagnosing and monitoring interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). Despite advances, predicting disease progression and treatment response remains challenging. HRCT enables noninvasive visualization and classification of patterns of lung injury and assessment of disease extent. Visual estimation of CT extent of fibrotic lung disease is an independent predictor of mortality and progression but is subjective, with only modest interobserver agreement for radiologic interpretation of ILD. Machine learning-based textural analyses of fibrosis extent on

Local salient location-aware anomaly mask synthesis for pulmonary disease anomaly detection and lesion localization in CT images.

Automated pulmonary anomaly detection using computed tomography (CT) examinations is important for the early warning of pulmonary diseases and can support clinical diagnosis and decision-making. Most training of existing pulmonary disease detection and lesion segmentation models requires expert annotations, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive, and struggles to generalize across atypical diseases. In contrast, unsupervised anomaly detection alleviates the demand for dataset annotation and is more generalizable than supervised methods in detecting rare pathologies. However, due to the l

Open-source domain adaptation to handle data shift for volumetric segmentation-use case kidney segmentation.

OBJECTIVES: Current development of kidney segmentation models has focused on using a single-phase CT, resulting in significant performance degradation caused by simple characteristic drift in testing datasets, e.g., difference in contrast phase appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We introduce a domain adaptation approach leveraging a latent space discriminator to train a robust model for segmenting kidneys from CT volume irrespective of the contrast dose and functional anomaly. We aim to handle three primary domain shifts between training and testing datasets-(i) contrast to non-contrast, (ii)

A semantic feature enhanced YOLOv5-based network for polyp detection from colonoscopy images.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common digestive system tumor with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. At present, the use of computer-assisted colonoscopy technology to detect polyps is relatively mature, but it still faces some challenges, such as missed or false detection of polyps. Therefore, how to improve the detection rate of polyps more accurately is the key to colonoscopy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved YOLOv5-based cancer polyp detection method for colorectal cancer. The method is designed with a new structure called P-C3 incorporated into the backbone and ne

Subcutaneous edema segmentation on abdominal CT using multi-class labels and iterative annotation.

PURPOSE: Anasarca is a condition that results from organ dysfunctions, such as heart, kidney, or liver failure, characterized by the presence of edema throughout the body. The quantification of accumulated edema may have potential clinical benefits. This work focuses on accurately estimating the amount of edema non-invasively using abdominal CT scans, with minimal false positives. However, edema segmentation is challenging due to the complex appearance of edema and the lack of manually annotated volumes. METHODS: We propose a weakly supervised approach for edema segmentation using initial ede

Calcified Adrenal Lesions: Pattern Recognition Approach on Computed Tomography With Pathologic Correlation.

Incidental adrenal lesions are found in 2% to 10% of the population. The presence and pattern of calcifications, in conjunction with other clinical and imaging features, such as soft tissue attenuation, enhancement, and laterality, can aid in narrowing a differential diagnosis, thereby preventing unnecessary biopsies and avoiding delays in management. Calcified adrenal lesions can be categorized under the clinical and laboratory headings of normal adrenal function, hyperfunctioning adrenal tissue, and adrenal insufficiency. In this review, we provide an algorithmic approach to assessing calcif

Segmentation of abdominal organs in computed tomography using a generalized statistical shape model.

Segmentation of anatomical structures in computed tomography images remains an important stage in computer-aided diagnostics and therapy. Due to the complexity of anatomical structures in the abdominal cavity, the occurrence of anatomical variants and pathological changes of organs in computed tomography images, segmentation is still treated as a current research problem. The paper presents the segmentation method based on the generalized statistical shape model. The method was tested in the application to segmentation based on 40 cases of computed tomography with contrast: 20 cases were inclu

Measuring rib cortical bone thickness and cross section from CT.

This study assesses the ability to measure local cortical bone thickness, and to obtain mechanically relevant properties of rib cross-sections from clinical-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans of human ribs. The study utilized thirty-four sections of ribs published by Perz et al. (2015) in three modalities: standard clinical CT (clinCT), high-resolution clinical CT (HRclinCT), and microCT (µCT). Clinical-resolution images were processed using a Cortical Bone Mapping (CBM) algorithm applied to cross-cortex signals resampled perpendicularly to an initial smooth periosteal border. Geometric

Quantitative analysis of patients with celiac disease by video capsule endoscopy: A deep learning method.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is one of the most common diseases in the world. Capsule endoscopy is an alternative way to visualize the entire small intestine without invasiveness to the patient. It is useful to characterize celiac disease, but hours are need to manually analyze the retrospective data of a single patient. Computer-aided quantitative analysis by a deep learning method helps in alleviating the workload during analysis of the retrospective videos. METHOD: Capsule endoscopy clips from 6 celiac disease patients and 5 controls were preprocessed for training. The frames with a large fi

Imaging and Screening for Colorectal Cancer with CT Colonography.

Despite being readily preventable, colorectal cancer ranks second behind only lung cancer in overall mortality. However, this situation could be reversed if screening tests that effectively detect advanced adenomas and early cancers were broadly applied. Computed tomographic colonography (CTC) reflects an ideal balance of minimal invasiveness with high-level performance, assuming all facets of the examination are appropriately addressed. Unfortunately, this promising screening test remains grossly underused. This article details the technical and interpretive approaches used by one successful

Learning Based Segmentation of CT Brain Images: Application to Postoperative Hydrocephalic Scans.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocephalus is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. Segmentation of brain imagery into brain tissue and CSF [before and after surgery, i.e., preoperative (pre-op) versus postoperative (post-op)] plays a crucial role in evaluating surgical treatment. Segmentation of pre-op images is often a relatively straightforward problem and has been well researched. However, segmenting post-op computational tomographic (CT) scans becomes more challenging due to distorted anatomy and subdural hematoma collections pressing on t

CBCT-based volume of simulated root resorption - influence of FOV and voxel size.

AIM: To examine the influence of the field of view (FOV) and voxel size on the measurement of the volume of simulated internal root resorption (IRR) lesions through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODOLOGY: Eleven single-rooted teeth with IRR simulated by acid demineralization were studied. CBCT images were acquired using large FOV (voxel sizes of 0.200, 0.250 and 0.300 mm) and limited FOV (voxel sizes of 0.076, 0.100 and 0.200 mm). The IRR volumes were calculated using the Dolphin(®) software. Volumetric measurements were validated using IRR silicone putty casts. The analysis of var

Interpretation of multi-detector computed tomography images before dissection may allow detection of vascular anomalies: a postmortem study of anomalous origin of the right subclavian artery and the right vertebral artery.

The Graduate School of Medicine at Chiba University is planning to introduce computed tomography (CT) images of donated cadavers to the gross anatomy laboratory. Here we describe an anomaly of the right subclavian artery that was detected by interpretation of CT images prior to dissection. The anomaly was verified to be the right subclavian artery, as the last branch of the aortic arch, by subsequent dissection of the cadaver. We also identified an anomalous origin of the right vertebral artery by dissection. This anomaly was also visible on CT images, although it had not been recognized in th

[Imaging of oto-mandibular dysplasias].

The modern imaging opened a possibility of precise exploration of otomandibular dysplasias. The techniques of browsing by IRM and CT Scan and the software of image processing which is associated with these techniques (three-dimensional, superposition and removing of the anatomical structures) allow to carry out a true anatomical dissection of the whole of these malformative syndromes. The study of the skeletal anomalies gains by specifying the disorders of development of the various mandibular segments: temporomandibular joint, ramus and horizontal branch and also, all cranio-maxillar structur

Automated Coregistered Segmentation for Volumetric Analysis of Multiparametric Renal MRI.

PURPOSE: This study aims to develop and evaluate a fully automated deep learning-driven postprocessing pipeline for multiparametric renal MRI, enabling accurate kidney alignment, segmentation, and quantitative feature extraction within a single efficient workflow. METHODS: Our method has three main stages. First, a segmentation network delineates renal structures in high-contrast images. Next, a deep learning-based pairwise image registration algorithm maps the multiparametric image series to a common target and transfers the predicted annotations between the multiparametric images. Finally,
