Incidence and characteristics of childhood Hodgkin's lymphoma in Greece: a nationwide study (Greece).

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence and epidemiological profile of childhood (0-14 years) Hodgkin's lymphoma in Greece derived by the network of childhood Hematology-Oncology departments on the basis of all 95 newly diagnosed cases during a seven-year period. METHODS: Seventy-one of these cases were individually age and gender matched to an equal number of controls. RESULTS: The incidence of childhood Hodgkin Lymphoma reached a relatively high figure of 7.8 per million children-years, with an age distribution (2.2 for children 0-4; 6.3 for those 5-9 and 13.9 for those 10-14-years-old) and

Direct and indirect effects of routine vaccination of children with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease--United States, 1998-2003.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a leading cause of pneumonia and meningitis in the United States and disproportionately affects young children and the elderly. In 2000, a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was licensed in the United States for routine use in children aged <5 years. Surveillance data from 2001 and 2002 indicated substantial declines in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children and adults compared with prevaccine years . This report updates assessment of the impact of PCV7 on IPD through 2003 by using population-based data from the Active Bacterial C

Economic evaluation of meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccination programmes in The Netherlands and its impact on decision-making.

The cost-effectiveness of one time vaccination of all persons aged 14 months to 18 years (catch-up programme) and of routine childhood immunisation at either ages 2 + 3 + 4 months, 5 + 6 months, or 14 months with a meningococcal C conjugate vaccine was estimated for The Netherlands, from a societal and a health care payer perspective. A decision analysis cohort model was employed (time horizon 77 years), direct and indirect costs (friction cost method) were considered and future costs and effects were discounted at 4%. The results showed that all vaccination options yield a substantial health

Evaluation of serogroup A meningococcal vaccines in Africa: a demonstration project.

Endemic and epidemic meningococcal disease constitutes a major public-health problem in African countries of the 'meningitis belt' where incidence rates of the disease are many-fold higher (up to 25 cases per 100,000 population) than those in industrialized countries, and epidemics of meningococcal disease occur with rates as high as 1,000 cases per 100,000 people. Using the precedent established during the licensing of conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b and serogroup C meningococci and components of currently-licensed meningococcal polysaccharide vaccines, new meningococ

Progressive reduction in treatment-related deaths in Medical Research Council childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia trials from 1980 to 1997 (UKALL VIII, X and XI).

In the last 20 years, the survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) has markedly improved, largely owing to a decrease in relapses. However, children still die from complications of treatment and these are potentially preventable. We have analysed data from three large consecutive national protocols for ALL from 1980 to 1997 [Medical Research Council United Kingdom ALL (MRC UKALL) trials VIII, X and XI] to compare the incidence and causes of treatment-related deaths (TRD). The percentage of TRD has fallen from 9% to 2% (UKALL VIII to XI), largely as a result of a decr

Vaccine safety versus vaccine efficacy in mass immunisation programmes.

In community-wide immunisation programmes against childhood infections there is a conflict between the interests of the individual (vaccine safety and efficacy) and the interests of the community (vaccine uptake and level of herd immunity). Studies suggesting that the complication rate is greater with the high efficacy Urabe Am 9 mumps vaccine than with the lower efficacy Jeryl Lynn vaccine, have led to concern about whether the higher efficacy mumps vaccine should be introduced or retained in nationwide mass immunisation programmes. We describe the use of a mathematical model to assess benefi

Persistence of mosquito-borne viruses in Kern County, California, 1983-1988.

The persistence of arboviruses was studied from 1983 to 1988 in mixed agriculture, marsh, riparian, and foothill habitats in Kern County, CA. Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus was isolated frequently during 1983 from Culex tarsalis and Aedes melanimon and was detected by the seroconversion of sentinel chickens. WEE virus then disappeared, even though vector competence studies during 1984-1986 showed that Cx. tarsalis was able to transmit WEE virus. St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus was detected sporadically in 3 of the 6 years of the study by isolation from Cx. tarsalis and/or by s

Measles-containing vaccination rates in southern Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Southern Alberta is home to many unique homogeneous communities that typically educate their children in private schools. A number of these communities do not promote immunization as a preventive public health measure, although the reasons behind this vary. People within these communities keep themselves somewhat secluded from other populations and thus do not benefit from overall herd immunity. This has led to frequent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in private schools affiliated with these homogeneous religious communities. OBJECTIVE: To report on low immunization rate

Dynamic Gene Network Alterations and Identification of Key Genes in the Spleen During African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) Infection.

ASFV is responsible for high mortality in domestic pigs and has caused substantial economic impact on the global swine industry due to herd losses, trade restrictions, and disease control measures. We analyzed publicly available spleen RNA-seq data from ASFV-infected pigs (n = 13 total samples), including 7 pre-infection (0 dpi), 4 samples at 2 days post-infection (2 dpi), and 2 samples at 5 dpi (5 dpi). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified 19 modules; module-trait correlations revealed six modules associated with infection time. A co-expression module enriched for i

Isolation of porcine intestinal Lactobacillus salivarius and antimicrobial potential of its biosurfactant.

BACKGROUND: Lactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) is a probiotic widely colonized in the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals. Its biosurfactant (BS) exhibits antibacterial and antiviral activities, along with advantages such as biodegradability, non-toxicity, and stability. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a major pathogen in swine farms, causing immunosuppression or immune dysfunction. PCV2-positive herds exhibit elevated susceptibility, often accompanied by severe secondary bacterial infections. To explore novel antimicrobial biologics for enhancing swine immunity, this study

Humoral immune response to equine chorionic gonadotropin in ewes: association with major histocompatibility complex and interference with subsequent fertility.

In dairy ewes, the use of eCG as a convenient hormone for the induction of ovulation is necessary for out-of-season breeding and artificial insemination (AI). In this report we show the presence of anti-eCG antibodies in plasma of treated ewes. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) was involved in the individual variability of the humoral immune responses to eCG. We found significant associations between the anti-eCG response phenotype and some MHC class II alleles. The low immune response phenotype was associated with one MHC class II allele only in Lacaune ewes, and the high immune resp

Review: Bovine foetal mortality - risk factors, causes, immune responses and immuno-prophylaxis.

This review of bovine foetal mortality (>42 d gestation) concluded that while the majority of risk factors associated with sporadic loss operate at animal-level, e.g. foetal plurality, those that operate at herd-level, e.g. some foetopathogenic infections, are more likely to result in abortion outbreaks. While the causes of foetal mortality have traditionally been classified as infectious and non-infectious, in fact, the latter category is a diagnosis of exclusion, generally without determination of the non-infectious cause. This review has also established that the traditional dichotomisation

Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis of highly virulent African swine fever virus infection reveals complex and unique virus host interaction.

African swine fever virus (ASFV), one of the most devastating emerging swine pathogens in China, causes nearly 100 % mortality in naive herds. Here, whole-transcriptome RNA-seq analysis was conducted in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) infected with Pig/Heilongjiang/2018 (Pig/HLJ/18) ASFV at different time points. Our data suggested that ASFV genes expression demonstrated a time-depended pattern and ASFV early genes were involved in antagonizing host innate immunity. Moreover, viral small RNA (vsRNA) was generated as well. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis of host genes suggested a strong i

Liver fluke vaccines in ruminants: strategies, progress and future opportunities.

The development of a vaccine for Fasciola spp. in livestock is a challenge and would be advanced by harnessing our knowledge of acquired immune mechanisms expressed by resistant livestock against fluke infection. Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity directed to the surface tegument of juvenile/immature flukes is a host immune effector mechanism, suggesting that antigens on the surface of young flukes may represent prime candidates for a fluke vaccine. A Type 1 immune response shortly after fluke infection is associated with resistance to infection in resistant sheep, indicating that v

Vaccination against the major infectious diseases.

The reputation of vaccination rests on a 200-year-old history of success against major infectious diseases. That success has led to the doctrine of 'for each disease, a vaccine'. Although some diseases have proved frustrating, this doctrine carries considerable truth. However, when one reviews the vaccines now available it is apparent that most successes have been obtained when the microbe has a bacteremic or viremic phase during which it is susceptible to the action of neutralizing antibodies, and before replication in the particular organ to which it is tropic. Poliomyelitis and infections b

Live vaccines against hemoparasitic diseases in livestock.

Live vaccines against hemoparasitic diseases in livestock are based on parasites derived from culture (Theileria annulata), from blood of infected animals (Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma centrale, (attenuated) Anaplasma marginale and Cowdria ruminantium), and from ticks (Theileria parva). The T. annulata attenuated cultured schizont vaccine is safe for all varieties of cattle. Blood derived vaccines are recommended mainly for young cattle, the age limit varying with the different vaccines and breeds of cattle. In older animals, monitoring of the individual response is needed. Immun

Structural mimics of SARS-CoV-2.

Since its first detection in 2019, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected approximately 778 million people and claimed 7.1 million lives globally. A deeper understanding of the biology of SARS-CoV-2 was instrumental in facilitating the development of protective vaccines and new therapeutics, as well as evaluating the impact of drug re-purposing to limit the pandemic. To date, approximately 13.64 billion vaccine doses have been administered; with approximately 67% of the global population having completed their primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations. The FDA

Measles Vaccine Boosters in Immunocompromised Adults to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality From Acute Measles Infection: A Scoping Review.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness associated with significant global mortality, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. As vaccine hesitancy continues to increase following the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with a lack of measles-specific antiviral agents, the risk of outbreaks and epidemics remains elevated. Immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of serious complications from measles, especially because the live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be contraindicated in severely immunocompromised patients. As such, these individuals depend on herd im

Rotavirus vaccination and incidence of type 1 diabetes: a population-based natural experiment.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Environmental factors, including infections, have been suspected to influence the risk of type 1 diabetes. Studies of rotavirus vaccine and risk of type 1 diabetes have shown conflicting results. We took advantage of the rapid and high uptake of the rotavirus vaccine among infants in Norway as a natural experiment to study the potential association between rotavirus vaccination and type 1 diabetes incidence in Norway. METHODS: In this cohort study, we followed all children born in Norway during 2007-2019 from 6 months to 5 years of age for type 1 diabetes. In an interrupted t

Serotype Characterization and Transmission Modelling of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Dairy Farms, Bishoftu, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is among the most important transboundary animal diseases, causing widespread economic losses due to decreased productivity, trade restrictions, and costly disease management efforts. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize circulating FMDV serotypes and quantify within-farm transmission dynamics during active outbreaks in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. METHODS: Five epithelial tissue and 39 oral swab samples were collected from 11 dairy farms experiencing active FMD outbreaks. Samples were tested using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain re
